I think the best someone can do who knows there's "dirt" on them is to get ahead of it.
As soon as he took the MP role, a post describing any questionable conduct and behavior in his past as being something he regrets, that he accepts the role with dignity/decorum and responsibility, and sincerely requests the public to hold him especially in line forthwith might have saved him?
I guess that's what I might try/do (with sincerity if I was genuinely trying to be a good guy), even if it still backfires.
Absolutely should have been the first thing he did, especially with his history.
But he did try and double down on the "i don't remember/maybe AI" angle first and that definitely sunk him.
