In November 2024, South Africa’s new-vehicle market grew 8.1% year on year to 48 585 units, with passenger vehicles again proving the catalyst for the industry’s overall growth. Indeed, sales in this segment increased 20.0% year on year to 35 101 units last month.
As was the case in October, the passenger-vehicle segment was aided by sales to the rental industry, which comprised a significant 19.5% of its total. But which models were the most popular overall? Let’s break down SA’s best-selling passenger vehicles for November 2024.

Many potential vehicle buyers still holding out for further rate cuts, NADA says
Although new vehicle sales are ticking upwards, with November having seen a second consecutive month of growth, many consumers appear to be holding out for further interest rate reductions, while those that are taking the plunge are opting for less expensive vehicles.
For similar reasons, demand for used vehicles remains strong. However, many potential buyers appear to be testing affordability or exploring their credit options without actually committing to purchases, says Thembinkosi Pantsi, Vice-Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA).
“The recent interest rate cuts may have encouraged some optimism, but many buyers are adopting a wait-and-see approach as they assess future rate movements,” Pantsi said.
WesBank’s marketing head Lebo Gaoaketse said the vehicle market would need to find a lot more momentum before it could rest easier on a recovery path.
Gaoaketse said inflated household budgets continued to keep consumers under severe pressure.
“The average deal size financed by the bank is 6% lower year-on-year for new vehicles, indicating affordability concerns amidst new car price inflation. In addition, despite sales being significantly higher than a year ago, demand as measured by applications has softened substantially.”

The new Chery Tiggo Cross officially launched in South Africa on 1 November 2024. So, how did this fresh-faced Chinese crossover fare in its first month on sale in Mzansi? Let’s take a closer look at the numbers.
According to figures reported to industry representative body Naamsa, Chery sold 205 units of the Tiggo Cross in November 2024, representing 10.2% of the Chinese firm’s total (excluding other Chery Group brands like Jaecoo, Omoda and Jetour) for the month. Interestingly, an additional 77 units were registered in October, ahead of the nameplate’s official market launch, taking its tally to 282 units.
So, in November 2024, the Tiggo Cross placed behind the Tiggo 4 Pro – which recorded a 2024 best of 1 191 units – as well as the Tiggo 7 Pro (468 units, including 50 sales to the rental industry) but ahead of the flagship Tiggo 8 Pro (142 units).
As a reminder, the Tiggo Cross portfolio currently comprises just a pair of derivatives, priced at R399 900 in the case of the Comfort grade and R449 900 for the Elite trim level. Both offer 108 kW and 210 Nm courtesy of a turbocharged 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front axle via a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard.

New export record for Ford SA as more than 10,000 Rangers shipped abroad last month
Ford South Africa reached a new export milestone in November 2024, achieving the highest figure so far for the current-generation Ranger.
With 10,574 of these bakkies shipped abroad last month, the Ranger was South Africa’s top vehicle export, trailed by the Mercedes C-Class (8,400), BMW X3 (4,700), Toyota Hilux (3,986), Volkswagen Polo (1,780), Isuzu D-Max (330) and Nissan Navara (299).
While the latter two bakkies are primarily exported to African markets, the Ford Ranger is shipped to over 100 global markets, including European countries.
Production of the current-generation Ranger kicked off in November 2022, following a R15.8 billion investment in the Silverton plant outside Pretoria. The facility has an installed capacity over more than 200,000 vehicles per year. It is one of four international Ranger production hubs, which also include Thailand, the US and Argentina.
However, Ford’s Ranger record comes at a time when South African vehicle exports are on a downward slide, following a record 2023. Vehicle exports declined year-on-year by 28.6% in November, on the tail of significant declines in the preceding months.

The two Japanese firms are in talks to join forces in new holding company that could also include Mitsubishi
Japanese giants Honda and Nissan have confirmed that they will begin talks to merge their companies into a new automotive powerhouse – that could also include Mitsubishi.
Honda and Nissan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to hold discussions over a ‘business integration’ of the two companies in a new joint holding company. They have also signed a separate MoU with Mitsubishi for that firm to explore that firm becoming part of the holding company. The plans were first reported by Nikkei last week.
Talks will begin shortly, with the goal to reach a definitive agreement by June 2025, with the merger then going through in August 2026. If it happens the two brands would remain distinct, but behind the scenes they would standardise platforms and powertrains, share R&D and collaborate on manufacturing.
