The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

Everyone should boycott buying new vehicles for a while and see the prices at the dealerships drop drastically as a result.
That would be awesome, but over the last couple of years the dealers started preparing for this. It's called balloon payments. You buy a car, drive it for 3 years, trade it in for a new one - rinse and repeat. Effectively the dealers put themselves on the payroll of as many locked-in buyers as possible to ensure their future.

True. I just feel they will sell up a storm if they actively market the double cab brand new from R 219 900. That's entry level hatchback money.

True, I see the list price and move on, whereas if the list was R200k I might have seriously considered it.

Quattro loses crown: there’s a new AWD sales king

According to a report out of the United Kingdom, Audi is no longer the holder of the global all-wheel-drive sales record.

Yes, Autocar says that Subaru sold a whopping 965 892 all-wheel-drive vehicles in its last fiscal year (April 2015 to April 2016), some 245 382 more than second-placed Audi (with its quattro all-wheel drive). Jaguar Land Rover placed third with 485 797 units.

Interestingly, the bulk (an estimated 60%) of Subaru’s sales reportedly came from the United States, with its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system standard on nearly all of its vehicles (virtually everything bar the BRZ).

While the Japanese automaker has effectively gone mainstream in the US, that’s not the case in in South Africa, where Subaru sold just 905 units in 2016 (according to Lightstone Auto), with its Forester (514) proving the most popular. With the BRZ having been removed from the local line-up, all 905 were equipped with AWD as standard.

The local line-up, however, is set to expand, with the new Impreza and Levorg headed to our shores soon, and the new XV and updated WRX and WRX STI hot on their heels.

Subaru are amazing cars. In the US the pricing is right, it does not compete with an Audi or Merc on price level.

The WRX STI is 720K. Madness. My car had a profit mark up of +45K on a 300K car.

The mark ups are large here. It is also a fully imported car...

The prices always go up. They never come down when the rand strengthens.

In other parts of the world, new model cars sometimes come out at lower prices.

A very small number of new cars are being sold above 300K. Serves them right. price gorging here is SA is horrendous

Golf facelift (except for GTI) is cheaper than outgoing model.

Renault-Nissan to topple Toyota and VW, says CEO

CEO Carlos Ghosn has predicted that the Renault-Nissan alliance will soon overtake Volkswagen and Toyota as the world’s best-selling automaker.

“We have been among the top three carmakers since January in sales volume, and we expect to be in the top spot by mid-year – although this was not our goal,” Ghosn said, according to Automotive News.

In the first four months of 2017, the Volkswagen Group sold 3,32 million vehicles, while Toyota managed 3,06 million, according to market research firm Jato Dynamics. Renault-Nissan, meanwhile, came in with 3,02 million units.

The alliance, of course, now also includes Mitsubishi Motors, after Nissan last year completed the acquisition of a controlling 34 % stake.

According to the report, the alliance’s global sales are up eight percent year-on-year, with Toyota’s increasing six percent. VW Group sales, meanwhile, have fallen one percent in this time.

In 2016, Toyota lost the best-selling crown to the Volkswagen Group after four years on top.

A tripartite alliance? it will be unstoppable, just like another tripartite alliance we all know so well... ;)

Sad state of affairs if that group of sub-par vehicles is all you can buy for 200K :(

None of those even crack the 90KW mark, and every single one of them is fwd ... *spits*

I don't even think you can find anything that is RWD for under R400k, unless it's a bakkie.

And the 2017 International Engine of the Year is…

The International Engine of the Year Awards for 2017 have been handed out, with the 3,9-litre V8 twin turbopetrol engine (codename F154CB) in the Ferrari 488 GTB/Spider becoming only the fifth powertrain to score back-to-back wins in the 19 years of the competition.

“It is fitting that probably the best turbocharged engine ever developed has secured back-to-back outright International Engine of the Year Award titles,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman, International Engine of the Year Awards.

“Its blend of heart-thumping performance on both road and track, with a glorious V8 Maranello rumble and an ultra-sophisticated design that’s loaded with advanced technologies, makes the Ferrari V8 unbeatable for another year.”

This year, some 58 jury members from around the world participated, including CAR magazine’s own technical editor, Nicol Louw.

Second place went to Porsche’s 3,0-litre turbopetrol (the brand also scooped the “1,8-litre to 2,0-litre” class for the 2,0-litre turbo from the 718 Boxster and Cayman), while BMW’s 1,5-litre three-cylinder electric-petrol hybrid (as used in the BMW i8) took the final step on the podium.

Tesla became the first automaker to win the new “Electric Powertrain” category with its Model S and X models. Honda grabbed the “New Engine” award with the NSX’s 3,5-litre V6 turbopetrol hybrid powertrain beating the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s 2,0-litre, inline four-cylinder turbodiesel and Fiat Chrysler’s 2,9-litre V6 turbopetrol unit found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Ford’s 1,0-litre EcoBoost engine, meanwhile, claimed the “Under 1,0-litre” title for the sixth year in a row (check out all the category winners in the table below).

So, how does the competition work? Well, all passenger car engines in production that are available in more than one country are divided into their respective categories (mostly by capacity). Each judge then has to score their top five engines in each segment. The winner of each capacity category, and the new electric category, progresses to round two, where the overall winner is chosen.

JD Power lists best (and worst) quality brands in US

The results of the JD Power 2017 US Initial Quality Study are out, with Korean automaker Kia Motors ranking highest in overall initial quality for the second consecutive year.

“Initial quality” in this annual study is measured by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. The study measures more than 200 vehicle parameters, tabulating responses from nearly 80 000 verified new vehicle owners in the United States.

JD Power says quality in 2017 has improved across seven of the eight categories measured, with 27 of the 33 brands in the study improving their quality compared with 2016.

Kia placed first overall with a score of 72 PP100, while Hyundai’s Genesis luxury sub-brand ranked second with 77 PP100. Porsche registered a score of 78 PP100, giving it the final place on the podium, while Ford and Ram tied for fourth with 86 PP100 each.

The study suggests that Mini is the most improved brand, with owners reporting 33 PP100 fewer problems than in 2016.

Volkswagen managed 93 PP100, putting it on par with Nissan, while Toyota (95 PP100) only just snuck in above the industry average of 97 PP100. Mercedes-Benz returned a score of 102 PP100, while Audi was even further down the table on 115 PP100.

And the three worst performers in the study? Volvo (134), Jaguar (148) and Fiat (163).

Kia bagged the most model-level awards, with the Cadenza, Forte (what we know as the Cerato), Niro, Sorento and Soul each topping their respective segments.
