AA Kinsey Report 2019: These vehicles are cheapest to service

The 2019 Kinsey Report has arrived and, for the first time in its 29-year history, will be co-branded with the Automobile Association (AA). This partnership between the author Malcolm Kinsey and the AA means the report will from now on officially be known as the AA-Kinsey Report.

Sikkie Kajee, chairperson of the AA, says: “We are thrilled to partner with Malcolm on this important research he does annually – notably without any financial input from manufacturers.

"His research methods are sound, and the prices he records are what a customer, walking into a dealership, will pay on that day. As an organization committed to giving consumers as much usable, practical information, this partnership is a naturally good fit for us."

Yeah, Ford's services are rough. All 5 of my Ranger workhorses did not come with a service plan and even the first 20k service is nearly 4 grand. Ridiculous

South Africa's 10 best-selling bakkies of June 2019

The sales figures for June 2019 are in ... and a massive 2 741 units separate the top two vehicles as the (increasingly one-sided) battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the sixth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux – now bolstered by the arrival of the GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives – remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger again having to make do with second place (after the first half of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 8 133 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

Meanwhile, the Nissan NP200 remained in third, with the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – sticking in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 525 units of the D-Max and 86 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody held steady in fifth.

South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies of June 2019:

1. Toyota Hilux – 4 770
2. Ford Ranger – 2 029
3. Nissan NP200 – 1 709
4. Isuzu KB/D-Max – 1 611
5. Nissan NP300/Hardbody – 780
6. Mahindra Pik-Up – 241
7. Volkswagen Amarok – 225
8. GWM Steed – 175
9. Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up – 169
10. Nissan Navara – 126

Suzuki sales pass Mazda, Kia and I think that it's Suzuki best ever month while the overall passenger sales declined as compared to June 2018.

Naamsa: June 2019 – declining sales trend continues

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa said the new vehicle sales declining trend continued into June 2019, although lower passenger car sales were offset by growth in some of the commercial vehicle segments.

Naamsa confirmed aggregate domestic sales at 45 939 units showed a decline of 724 units or 1,6 percent from the 46 663 vehicles sold in June 2018. Following a surprising decline in May 2019, export sales returned to register strong growth of 3 819 vehicles, or a gain of 14,3 percent, compared with the 26 785 vehicles exported in June last year.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 45 939 vehicles, an estimated 36 922 units or 80,4 percent represented dealer sales, an estimated 12,5 percent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,7 percent to government, and 3,4 percent to industry corporate fleets.

The June 2019 new passenger car market had registered a decline of 942 cars or a fall of 3,2 percent to 28 885 units compared to the 29 827 new cars sold in June last year. The car rental industry’s contribution accounted for a substantial 18,4 percent of new car sales in June 2019.

Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses at 14 495 units during June 2019 had recorded a modest increase of 173 units or a gain of 1,2 percent from the 14 322 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year.

Sales in the medium and heavy truck segments of the industry reflected a mixed performance and at 834 units and 1 725 units, respectively, reflected a strong increase of 115 vehicles or an improvement of 16,0 percent in the case of medium commercial vehicles, and, in the case of heavy trucks and buses, a decline of 70 vehicles or a fall of 3,9 percent compared with the corresponding month last year.

Passenger vehicles down, bakkies sales continue to rise - Here's how the SA car market shaped-up in June

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) reports that new vehicle sales continued to decline in June 2019, although lower passenger car sales had been offset by growth in some of the commercial vehicle segments.

SA's best-selling cars: Volkswagen’s popular Polo duo take top spots in June

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo topped the list as the best-selling passenger car in South Africa during June 2019.

The popular Vivo, which managed to sell off 2571 units, comprehensively outsold its Polo sibling; the more premium Polo only managed 1887 units to secure second place on our list.

Behind the Polos are the Toyota Fortuner (1410 units) and Renault Kwid (1056 units).

Still strong sales

The Ford EcoSport made a relatively large jump to the top half of our list with a respectable 819 units sold. Slow sales by rivals in June meant compact SUV could leapfrog a few positions.

Behind the EcoSport in sixth place is the Toyota Corolla Quest on 745 units, followed by the Datsun Go on 723 units. Hyundai’s i20 made its return to the list with 670 units sold, some eleven units ahead of the Toyota Etios (659 units).

South Africa's 10 best-selling passenger cars of June 2019

According to Naamsa, June 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 939 units, representing a fall of 1,6 percent, year on year. Here’s what happened in the sixth month of the year in the passenger vehicle segment...

As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s going on in terms of individual model sales. We’ve already examined the figures and picked out the 10 best-selling bakkies for the month, and now it’s time to do the same with the passenger vehicle market (check out the worst-selling passenger vehicles, too).

Take note that while BMW has started reporting individual model sales figures again, some brands such as German rival Mercedes-Benz continue to provide only aggregate data (Porsche, too, recently followed suit).

So, what happened in June 2019? Well, Volkswagen Polo Vivo remained in top spot, with the Polo hatch again having to settle for second place (for the record, the local arm of the German firm also sold 590 examples of its Polo sedan).

Toyota’s Fortuner, meanwhile, remained in third place, while the Renault Kwid climbed three spots to fourth and the Ford EcoSport three to fifth. The Toyota Corolla Quest returned to the table to take sixth place, while the Datsun Go likewise made a reappearance in seventh, as did the Hyundai i20 in eighth.

The Toyota Etios and Toyota RAV4 each dropped four spots to place ninth and tenth, respectively.

South Africa’s 10 best-selling passenger cars of June 2019:

1. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 2 571
2. Volkswagen Polo – 1 887
3. Toyota Fortuner – 1 410
4. Renault Kwid – 1 056
5. Ford EcoSport – 819
6. Toyota Corolla Quest – 745
7. Datsun Go – 723
8. Hyundai i20 – 670
9. Toyota Etios – 659
10. Toyota RAV4 – 653

SA’s 12 worst-selling passenger cars (under R500k) of June 2019

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales. Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles of June 2019, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period. But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores.

Of course, we must point out that some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

In addition, we don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been officially discontinued locally (if the vehicle in question is no longer listed on the manufacturer’s local site, we won’t include it in the list below). And we’ve also heeded the call to include model ranges that failed to sell a single unit.

So, what happened in the sixth month of 2019? Well, the Subaru Impreza and Toyota Prius each failed to register a sale during the month. Take note the Ford Focus was not included on the Blue Oval brand’s latest official pricing bulletin, so it no longer features here (no units were registered in June ... and no word on whether the next-generation model is still on the cards for SA).

SA's 12 worst-selling passenger cars (under R500k) of June 2019

Subaru Impreza – 0
Toyota Prius – 0
Abarth 595 – 1
Alfa Romeo Giulietta – 1
Fiat 500X – 1
Fiat Panda – 1
Jeep Renegade – 3
Opel Adam – 3
Suzuki Grand Vitara – 3
Landwind X5 – 4
Mahindra Thar – 5
Mini Convertible – 6

Ford must be extremely concerned, their Ford Ranger bakkie sales are diving fast. It doesn't help that their services are significantly more expensive than Toyota's.

This maybe true but....you can only sell what you produce.

Toyota Hilux smashes eight-year-old sales record in June 2019

Toyota South Africa Motors says its Hilux recorded its highest monthly sales total yet in June 2019, with 4 770 examples of the bakkie sold across the country.

This figure is some 35 units up on the bakkie’s previous best, which was recorded in 2011.

Interestingly, Toyota has confirmed 1 885 units were double-cab variants, 1 648 were Xtra-cab models and 1 237 were single-cab derivatives.

“There are not many locally manufactured vehicles that can claim the iconic status that Hilux has achieved in South Africa. Not only has the Hilux sold more than 1 million units to date [locally], it continues to be a sales sensation even in the trying economic climate we are experiencing,” said Calvyn Hamman, senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

New Car Sales in SA: June 2019

New car sales continue to strain in tough market conditions with June 2019 numbers yet again reflecting a decline but improvements in exports and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales offer marginal respite.

The first half of 2019 is gone and it wasn’t a good half for the local automotive industry which has been in a seemingly constant state of decline. The new car sales market declined by 1.6% in June 2019. Some improvements are expected in the second half of the year though...

“Being optimistic, overall market performance is improving over the first half, but its performance doesn’t follow any kind of trend,” says Ghana Msibi, WesBank Executive Head of Motor. “The market started the year 7.4% down in January, making June look relatively rosy – but it’s been a matter of how big the rest of the thorns were in-between.”

New car sales summary: June 2019

Aggregate new car sales of 45 939 units down by 1.6% (-724 units) compared with June 2018

Passenger car sales of 28 885 units down by 3.2% (-942 units) compared with June 2018

LCV sales of 14 495 units up by 1.2% (+173 units) compared with June 2018

Export sales of 30 604 up by 14.3% (+3 819 units) compared to June 2018

Best-Selling Car Brands in South Africa

1. Toyota - 12 208 units

2. Volkswagen - 7 235 units

3. Nissan - 4 503 units

4. Ford - 3 843 units

5. Hyundai - 2 560 units

New record as Toyota sells almost 5000 Hilux bakkies in June

Although June was a subdued month for the South African vehicle market as a whole, there was one vehicle that soared above every other on the market to set a new monthly sales record.

With a volume of 4770 units, the Toyota Hilux set a new monthly sales record, surpassing the previous record set in 2011.

In fact this was more than double what its nearest bakkie rival achieved, the Ford Ranger making do with 2029 sales in June. The Isuzu D-Max/KB was third, with 1611 sales.

Although the Hilux has consistently topped the South African sales charts in recent times, after having been given a good run for its money by the Ranger in 2016 and 2017, it is rare for the Toyota bakkie to achieve sales of more than 4000 units in a single month. In fact the Hilux was up significantly over the previous months, having sold 3187 units in May, 2411 in April and 4252 in March.

These were South Africa's 50 top selling vehicles in June 2019

The South African new vehicle market continued its gradual decline in June 2019, with overall sales across the segments shrinking by 1.6 percent, versus the same month last year, to 46 663 units in total.

Bucking recent trends, the light commercial vehicle market actually showed some growth in June, with a year-on-year gain of 1.2 percent to 14 495 units, but this was offset by a 3.2 percent decline in the passenger car market, which saw sales of 28 885 units. This was in spite of a substantial contribution from the rental car industry, which accounted for 18.4 percent of sales.

Medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales were a mixed bag, with the former segment growing by 16 percent year-on-year, and the latter declining by 3.9 percent.

Vehicle exports saw a return to growth, gaining 14.3 percent versus June 2018.

See-saw of hope and confusion

“Consumer and business confidence will be caught in a see-saw of hope and confusion unless macro-economic factors can begin providing some stability in the market,” said WesBank Executive Head Ghana Msibi.

“The only trend that does continue is the financial pressure that consumers remain under,” Msibi added. “While motorists should expect some relief in petrol prices during July, households will bear increases in rates and electricity prices from this month. The South African Reserve Bank will be considering interest rates carefully, but any relief will be small if at all.”

What one has to remember is that sales are dependent on supply.
If, or instance, Suzuki Jimny only sell 29 units it because there were only 29 units to sell.
So the same would apply to Ford.
If there were only so many to build , there would only so many to sell.

Ford must be extremely concerned, their Ford Ranger bakkie sales are diving fast. It doesn't help that their services are significantly more expensive than Toyota's.
Ford rules double cab market // Toyota single cab market. Perhaps someone can dig out the "per model" sales figures to substantiate / refute.

My guess is a fleet took on a heck of a lot of Hilux units in June. Government refleet?

The Ford Figo should really be doing better all things considered - engine , dealership network etc. It should be selling as well as the VW Polo Vivo or close to that.
