The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

Honda Midrand - one of the larger Honda dealerships - are packing it in. Ideally placed. No shortage of people in the area.

Here’s how many Land Cruiser units Toyota SA has sold in 2019 so far

Toyota’s cumulative global sales of the Land Cruiser series recently surpassed 10 million units (some 68 years after the original vehicle launched). So, how many has the Japanese firm sold in South Africa in 2019 so far?

Well, Toyota SA says a total of 3 684 Land Cruisers – across the 70 Series, Prado and 200 Series ranges – have been sold locally in the first nine months of the year.

Car industry in for a rough ride, warns Volkswagen

Volkswagen says its profits jumped by 44% in the third quarter thanks to a more profitable mix of vehicles in its lineup, but warned that global car markets are slowing more than expected and lowered its forecast for annual sales.

The Wolfsburg-based automaker pointed to the headwinds facing the industry by saying that it expects "vehicle markets will contract faster than previously anticipated in many regions of the world."

It said sales would be "on a level" with last year's record of 10.8 million vehicles. Previously it had expected a slight increase. The company said its profits would be in the lower end of its forecast range.

Global carmakers are facing a slowdown in sales amid disputes over trade and from pressure in the European Union and China to develop and sell low-emission vehicles that require heavy investment in new technology.

Ford and Renault have issued profit warnings in recent days, while Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler lost money in the second quarter and is expected to outline a cost-cutting strategy for investors on November 14.

SA vehicle sales | Top 10 best-sellers in October

The list is filled with the usual suspects as heavy-hitters like the Hilux, Ranger and Polo/Polo Vivo that dominate sales figures for the month of October.

Slight shift

Volkswagen's new T-Cross compact SUV is a newcomer to the list with and boasted an impressive 810 unit sales for September. This month though, it bettered that figure significantly with 1132 units sold during October.

^^^ Where are the Nissan Np200 and Toyota Fortuner ? Renault Kwid takes the 10th spot with 1056 sales - the Nissan Np200 sold less than that ?

The sub-R200K club is getting smaller. Next quarter the VW Polo Vivo will likely leave this club - cheapest R195 300 currently. I see the cheapest Renault Sandero Stepway is R203 900 now.
Wasn't the Stepway 160k a few years ago?

The price of the Grand i10 is hectic aswell.

That is why I don't believe the B.S of car prices being below inflation.

It is not a matter of 'belief'. It is possible to calculate a percentage increase with grade 4 maths.

Naamsa: October 2019 – a welcome uptick in new vehicle sales

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said it welcomed the uptick in new vehicle sales during October 2019. The car rental industry continued to provide “substantial support” to new vehicle sales volumes during the month, it added.

Reflecting on the new vehicle sales statistics for the month of October 2019, Naamsa confirmed aggregate domestic new vehicle sales, at 51 978 units, reflected a marginal increase of 122 units or 0,2 percent from the 51 856 vehicles sold in October 2018. Monthly export sales had registered a further solid performance in line with industry expectations.

Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 51 978 vehicles, an estimated 38 558 units or 74,2 percent represented dealer sales, an estimated 20,3 percent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,7 percent to industry corporate fleets and 1,8 percent to government.

The October 2019 new passenger car market increased by 860 cars or 2,5 percent to 35 904 units compared with the 35 044 new cars sold in October last year. The car rental industry continued to support domestic volumes, accounting for a significant 28,2 percent of new cars sales in October 2019.

Take note that some brands – including Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Haval – continue to provide only aggregate data (and thus no individual model sales).

So, what happened in October 2019? Well, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo remained at the top of the pile, with the Polo hatchback again having to settle for second place (for the record, the local arm of the German brand also sold 522 examples of its Polo sedan).

The Toyota Corolla Quest held steady in third, while the Ford EcoSport rocketed back into the top ten to grab a strong fourth place. The Volkswagen T-Cross, too, continued to impress, cracking four figures in its first full month on sale, which proved enough to secure it a credible fifth place.

Toyota’s Yaris held onto sixth spot, while the Renault Kwid dropped two places to seventh. The Toyota Fortuner slipped one to eighth, with the Ford Figo falling as many as five to ninth. Toyota’s Etios returned to the table to snaffle the final spot.

SA car sales | VW, Toyota trade punches in October

Continuing the customary trend, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo was again the best-selling vehicle in October 2019. VW managed to sell a stellar 2937 units last month, well clear of the bigger Polo on 2098 units.

In third place is the Toyota Corolla/Quest with 1812 units sold, ahead of the 1265 EcoSport units sold by Ford on the list.

Another VW to make a splash in the list for best-selling passenger cars, is the recently-launched T-Cross. In only its second month, it managed to build on the some-800 units sold during September. In October VW managed to move 1132 units to have the vehicle slot into fifth place.

However, Toyota continues its epic run in the top ten with the following: Yaris (1065 units, sixth), Fortuner (1018 untis, eighth), and Etios (957 units, ninth).

Renault managed to have two of its cars in the top ten. The Kwid sold 1056 units to secure seventh place, while the Sandero rounds out the top ten on 886 units.

SA's 13 worst-selling passenger cars (under R500k) of October 2019

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales. Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles of October 2019, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period. But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores.

Of course, we must point out that some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.

In addition, we don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been officially discontinued locally (if the vehicle in question is no longer listed on the manufacturer’s local site, we won’t include it in the list below). And we’ve also heeded the call to include model ranges that failed to sell a single unit.

SA's 13 worst-selling passenger cars (under R500k) of October 2019:

Alfa Romeo Giulietta – 0
Subaru Impreza – 0
Mini Convertible – 1
Peugeot 308 – 1
Suzuki Grand Vitara – 1
Toyota Prius – 1
Fiat 500X – 2
Abarth 595 – 3
GWM M4 – 3
Landwind X5 – 6
Jeep Renegade – 7
Mahindra Thar – 7
Opel Adam – 7

Earlier reports from Australia this year stated that production of the Suzuki Grand Vitara ended - either way the Dune version is not up for sale in South Africa anymore , only the Summit.
