AT LEAST FOUR WOUNDED IN BEDFORDVIEW SHOOTING: PARAMEDICS
At least three men and a woman were injured in a shootout at a shopping centre in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, on Thursday, paramedics said.
"I can confirm that four people were injured, ranging from serious to critical," Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said.
"The patients are all being treated at the scene and will transported to various hospitals."
She said all had sustained gunshot wounds, and that police were on the scene investigating.
A tweet on an account for Bedford Centre said: Bedford are investigating this horrific incident [sic]. We will release a statement as soon as we have more information."
In another tweet it said: "No stores were involved. Shootout between SBV and robbers."
A witness inside the centre, Renate Albrecht, told eNCA she had come out of a meeting when she heard "a stampede of people coming".
"We turned around and we heard gunshots. My business partner and I basically ran. The shots were coming from inside the centre and it sounded like it was getting louder like we were being followed," she said.
They ran to her car and hid until they were brave enough to leave.
She said people were running everywhere.
A Sapa photographer on scene said the centre had been cordoned off, and police with firearms were seen running around.
Outside the centre's parking lot, people were seen standing next to a Volkswagon Jetta with blood stains on it.
Sirens could be heard going off and a Shell garage next to the centre was cordoned off.
Eyewitness News and Netwerk24, meanwhile, tweeted pictures taken inside the centre.
EWN's Twitter page contained pictures of blood and injured people lying on the ground, and emergency services arriving.
A firearm surrounded by blood stains was also tweeted.
