Armed gang makes off with jewellery after shoot-out at East Rand Mall

A gang of eight carried out a brazen midday jewellery heist at East Rand Mall in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on Monday. The gang arrived at the mall armed with rifles and handguns, said SAPS spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo. They held a security guard at gunpoint and took him as a hostage to a jewellery store in the mall.

[WITBANK] – Lucky escape after mall robbery.

Several people, including three ER24 paramedics, were lucky to escape injury following a robbery at a mall in Witbank, Mpumalanga.

Three ER24 paramedics were seated inside a restaurant when they heard a sound like a gunshot coming from the entrance of the mall.

Medics proceeded to investigate and found an armed assailant in the doorway.

Several members of the public and the ER24 staff managed to escape into the nearby restaurant, barricading themselves in the kitchen.

Cops hunting two armed robbers who made off with cash, cellphones at Mthatha mall

Eastern Cape police are searching for two armed balaclava-clad suspects who stormed BT Ngebs Mall in Mthatha to rob a clothing store on Sunday morning.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, a number of cellphones belonging to shop employees, and a jacket, said police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci.

The brazen attack stunned morning shoppers, who were trapped inside locked supermarkets and clothing stores, as police combed the mall fearing the robbers may have hidden among shoppers.

Robbers foiled by Cresta mall security, cops

A shoot-out between police and robbers at Johannesburg's Cresta shopping centre has led to the arrest of two suspects.

At about 2pm on Tuesday, four suspects driving a white Toyota Etios hijacked a motorist driving an Opel Corsa in Cresta Mall's parking area, said Capt Kay Makhubele.

On their way out, they robbed a couple of their cellphones and other items.

“Just before the suspects exited the mall, the suspects were met by the police and security guards, where a shoot-out ensued.”

One suspect was shot and wounded. He was taken to hospital where he is under police guard, while another suspect was arrested at the scene.

The Vodacom store at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre was robbed in the early morning on Wednesday [July 22], with shoppers managing to capture footage of the incident.

According to reports from nearby shop owners, a number of aggressive armed men stormed the Vodacom and Chatz stores in the mall at roughly 9:53am this morning and proceeded to make off with an unknown amount of goods.

WATCH | Masked armed robbers hit two stores in Cape Town shopping mall

A gang of armed robbers, who wore face masks and hats, targeted two stores in Tyger Valley Shopping Centre on Wednesday morning.


Western Cape police said the five men entered stores situated opposite each other and helped themselves to cellphones and laptops.

They fled the scene in a red Kia sedan and a white light delivery vehicle, police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said.

Suspects snatch jewellery worth R2m during Eastgate Mall robbery
Armed robbers walked away with jewellery worth R2 million following a business robbery at an Arthur Kaplan shop in Eastgate Mall, Johannesburg, on Thursday.

"The complainant alleges that at about 11:30 while he was at work with his two colleagues when four customers entered the store one by one, they looked suspicious and his colleague pressed the panic baton before she started to help them," police spokesperson

Shots fired at Centurion Mall, cops on scene

JOHANNESBURG – There’s been a shooting at Centurion Mall today in what appears to have been a foiled robbery.

Police have confirmed shots were fired at the scene. However, it’s still unclear if there are any casualties. Images and videos posted on social media show some entrances closed, with shoppers waiting outside alongside paramedics.

Why not simply install metal detectors at all mall entrances with armed guards throughout. I know east gate have armed guards now. But east mall seem to see a robbery every other day but their security remains as lax as ever. In India they have strict security with soldiers at their malls but obviously for terror alert but should work just as well against ordinary thuggery.

Armed robber killed in shootout with CT police after heist at Somerset West mall

CAPE TOWN - An armed robber has been killed in a shootout with police on the N2 highway.

The suspect was one of five gunmen who robbed a jewellery store at Somerset Mall.

Another has been wounded and a third has been arrested.

The gang of five hit the jewellery store at around 10am on Tuesday morning.

It’s understood that they held employees at gunpoint and fled with jewellery.

Mall security responded and managed to arrest a 30-year-old man from Crossroads. His four accomplices fled in a white Audi.

Security guard shot while injured suspects escape in Cradlestone jewellery store robbery

Two of the suspects were injured during an exchange of fire between the off-duty police officers and the suspects. Gauteng Police have confirmed that a jewellery store at Cradlestone Mall was targeted on Sunday, 16 August. Three people in total were injured – two were suspects and the other a security guard who had to be airlifted. In a statement issued by Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, Gauteng Police spokesperson, preliminary investigations suggest that armed robbers came into the jewellery shop and after pushing the employees to the back of the store, they took jewellery of which the value is still undetermined. “Shots were fired as the suspects left the store. More shots were fired outside the mall,” she said.

Kingpins of thefts at malls convicted

Pretoria - Three men found guilty of masterminding a 2014 spate of mall robberies have been found guilty by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. At the height of the heists, the three stormed into a Telkom store at Irene Shopping Mall and stole cellphones worth more than R100 000. An investigation led police to Yeoville in Joburg, where the suspects were arrested. According to Sergeant Thabo Moatshe of the provincial Organised Crime and Project Investigation Unit, the men were brought before a magistrate.

3 men get life sentence for murder of police captain killed during KZN shopping centre heist

Three people have been sentenced to life for the murder of a Maphumulo police captain shot dead during a heist at a KwaZulu-Natal shopping centre.

Bheko Sibiya, 38, Mdeliseni Mathonsi, 28, and Siphamandla Mathonsi, 32, were handed the maximum sentence in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

Captain Dumisani Mhlanzi was gunned down on 23 February 2018, during an armed robbery at a Maphumulo shopping centre, said Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo. "The suspects made off with cash, cellphones and Captain Mhlanzi's service pistol," he said. A month later, Mdeliseni Mathonsi and Sibiya were arrested at KwaMashu men's hostel. "Three of their accomplices were fatally wounded during a shootout with police," Mhlongo said.

Westwood mall shooting: Manhunt underway for gang of armed robbers

Police in Gauteng have launched a manhunt after one person was shot dead in Boksburg on the morning of Friday 21 August during an armed robbery at the Westwood Shopping Centre. A gang of robbers are reported to have stalked two men who were attempting to deposit cash into a nearby ATM, before opening fire on them and making off with the cash. Westwood shooting: one killed in armed robbery South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said that the killing of one of the men and the robbery that followed has led them to initiate an urgent search for the gang of culprits. “Gauteng police are searching for a gang of armed suspects following an armed robbery and murder in Boksburg,” he said. “It is alleged that on Friday 21 August 2020, at about 11:45, two men were going to deposit cash at the bank in Boksburg North. When they took out two boxes with money inside, about four suspects started shooting at the victims and shootout ensued.” He confirmed that a 47-year-old man was killed in the ensuing shootout at Westwood Shopping centre.
