The Shopping Centre Armed Robbery Thread....

Syndicate may be linked to Vodacom store robbery

JOHANNESBURG – Police have said they’re investigating whether a group of men who robbed a Vodacom store at the Northgate Shopping Centre are part of a larger syndicate.

On Thursday, about six men stormed the shop and held staff and shoppers at gunpoint.

They then entered the store room and made off with R1.6 million worth of cellphones.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for at least nine men who killed a 65-year-old man while robbing a liquor store in Kibler Park on Thursday evening.

The police's Katlego Mogale said the suspects fled the scene in a Golf GTI and Ford Ranger.

“They wanted to rob a 65-year-old man of his wallet and when he tried to refuse they shot him and fled the scene.”

So much for the claim that they nailed the Cellular gang earlier this year.
There appears to be more than one "cellular gang"...

One of the cell shop in greenstone was hit on Thursday at 9am. I think it was a vodacom. No one injured. If deets are correct, over half a bar in stock taken.

I forgot to add, please prepare yourselves as we head into the festive affirmative shopping season :(

Gangs make off with loot in 2 KZN heists

Jeff Wicks, News24

Durban - Two audacious robberies - within minutes of each other on Tuesday - saw gangs of armed men escape with hundreds of thousands of rands.

As police try to piece together the circumstances of each attack, no arrests have been made yet.

In the first attack, an unknown number of men stormed a Checkers outlet in King Shaka Street in Stanger in an apparent pension pay-out heist.

The well-armed men cornered employees at the pension pay-out point.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said an “undisclosed amount of cash” was taken in the heist which played out in minutes.

“An unknown number of armed men accosted employees at a major supermarket [chain] and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint during the pension pay-out.

“They fled with cash, no injuries were reported and no shots were fired. No arrest has been made at this stage,” Naicker said.

Another incident occurred just 15 minutes later at a shop on Durban's Umgeni Road.

A police source, who could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the press, said R350 000 in cash was taken.

"We are expecting to see a lot of similar incidents today because it is month-end," he said.

“Four unknown armed men stormed into a wholesaler and robbed the employees of cash at gunpoint and fled. No injuries were sustained, no shots were fired and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“No arrests have been made,” he said.

Guard dies after Pick n Pay Kroonstad robbery

Jenni Evans, News24

Johannesburg - A Pick n Pay security guard was shot and killed after trying to stop a robbery at the Kroonstad branch on Monday, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said the supermarket was closing at about 18:00 when four people pretending to be customers entered the premises. They attacked staff and pointed guns at them.

The security guard tried to intervene and was shot in the head by one of the robbers.

Netcare911 paramedics who arrived at the supermarket found the guard lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.

Spokesperson Chris Botha said they worked at stabilising him and took him to hospital for further emergency treatment, but he died shortly after arrival.

The group took cash and fled in a blue Volkswagen Caravelle. Police were called and Kroonstad Detective Services and members of Visible Policing gave chase but came under fire when the gang saw them.

In a shoot-out between the police and the robbers, two suspects, aged 38 and 46, were arrested with a bag of cash and a firearm.

Thakeng said a manhunt was under way for the rest of the robbers.

He also urged businesses to intensify security at opening and closing time.

Anybody with information on the robbers can pass it to Detective Constable Tselani Tlali of the Hawks on 079-4950799.
