Cape Town - Cavendish Square has confirmed that an armed gang robbed a jewellery store in the upmarket shopping centre in Claremont on Tuesday morning.

The mall said on Twitter that seven armed robbers had hit Trigg Jewellers at 10.45am on Tuesday before fleeing the scene.

No injuries were reported and shops were back to trading as usual, Cavendish Square said.

Police were investigating.

According to online reports, shoppers were locked in various shops as the armed robbery took place.

Cavendish worker describes gunshots and smoke chaos

Cape Town - Billowing thick smoke greeted a Cavendish Square worker, who rushed out her store after hearing gunshots on Tuesday morning.

Arlene, 27, said she had heard three gunshots around 11:00.

"I went out to the railing and saw three guys inside [Trigg Jewellers] busy grabbing jewellery," she told News24.

"Another noise went off, but it was a smoke bomb. Smoke started rushing out and they ran out. They broke two glass display windows and grabbed more jewellery."

A few men remained in the back of Trigg Jewellers, she said.

She did not see any weapons, but was adamant that the noises she heard were bullets being fired.

"A lot of people were shouting and scattering. There was a time you could hardly see anything and the smell was unpleasant."

Shocked by the scene, she rushed back into her store and locked up.

She hid under a counter and phoned a colleague who was coming in for a later shift.

Another witness, Clive, who was working in a shop opposite the jewellery store, said police were speaking to employees who "looked very traumatised".

He had heard at least two gunshots being fired and that 15 suspects were involved.

All the gang members managed to escape.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a case of armed robbery has been opened for investigation.

Cavendish centre's manager Brenda Bibby confirmed the robbery had taken place, but said only seven robbers were involved and that no shots were fired.

Two killed in shoot-out at Gauteng mall

Johannesburg - A security guard and a suspected robber have been killed in a shoot-out at the Ga-Rankuwa Mall, Gauteng police said.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said the shooting began at 13:00 on Tuesday when a group of about five men attacked two security guards who were transporting cash to a bank inside the mall.

One security guard was carrying the cash box and the other guard was escorting him. Both were armed.

Nkoadi said about four men entered the mall.

He said one suspect pointed a firearm at the guard who was escorting the other guard. Another robber then pointed a firearm at the guard carrying the cash box.

A shoot-out ensued between one of the security guards and one of the robbers. Both sustained serious gunshot wounds.

The other robbers fled the scene in a white Toyota Hilux with an undisclosed amount of cash, Nkoadi said.

The security guard who was carrying the cash box was not harmed.

An armed robbery docket has been opened.

Another robbery at upmarket La Lucia mall

Durban – A woman was allegedly robbed of cash at knifepoint shortly after withdrawing money at the upmarket La Lucia Mall near Umhlanga in Durban, police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of robbery was opened at the Durban North Police Station. "The suspects fled on foot," he said.

This is the second incident at the mall in four months. In July, a man was reportedly robbed of R50 000 in the undercover parking at the mall.

Speaking to News24, the latest victim, who did not want to be named, said she and a friend had been approached by a man wearing blue overalls and two of his "friends".

"They were conducting deliveries and told us they were selling the clothing. My friend and I went to Pick n Pay to withdraw cash so I could pay bills. We decided to see what they were selling."

The victim said she was led to the delivery area where she and her friend waited with one of the men while the others "went to bring the goods".

'Details of incident vary significantly'

"It took very long for them to bring the goods. He then asked if we could phone his friends. Two calls later, my friend decided to step away for a moment. When she did this, he pulled up his shirt and revealed a knife.

"He said I had to give him my envelope of cash. I was so shocked; I thought he was joking at first. As my friend returned, he calmly walked away."

Releasing a statement on the incident, the centre's manager, Vanessa Belvins, said the victim’s statement to mall officials did not match press reports and her submission to police.

"Contrary to press reports, there was no mention of any weapon being used, nor any violence being inflicted by the alleged perpetrators on the alleged victim when this was reported to Centre Security on Monday.

"The alleged victim reported the case to the SAPS a day later, the details of which vary significantly to what was initially reported to centre management security."

Cape Town - A man was killed in a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Ottery earlier on Friday evening, Western Cape police said.

There were conflicting reports on how many people were injured in the incident.

While Captain FC van Wyk said one person was injured, paramedics put the number at two.

Police were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said they treated two people before they were taken to hospital.

He said the third person was declared dead on the scene.

Police could not provide further details but asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stop.

It was understood that the shooting happened outside the Pick n Pay Hyper on Ottery Road.
