4 arrested for attempted shopping centre bank robbery in Soshanguve

Karabo Ngoepe, News24

Pretoria - Four men have been arrested in connection with an attempted bank robbery in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

On Tuesday afternoon, police foiled a planned bank robbery after receiving a tip-off that a gang of 10 men wanted to rob an Absa bank at the Soshanguve Plaza shopping centre.

Police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu said the officers responded and were able to nab the four, while others managed to flee in two cars.

"Police scouted the area where the robbery was going to take place and saw the cars they had been tipped off about. They called for back up and managed to corner one of the cars," she said.

The gang was travelling in four different cars - an Audi, Golf GTI, VW Polo and a BMW. The three men travelling in the black GTI were cornered at a Pick 'n Pay complex next to the shopping centre. They are aged 27, 34 and 35.

A jamming device and reflector jackets were found inside the car.

"Police recovered a pistol hidden under the passenger seat. There were also 15 rounds of ammunition, as well as one magazine," she said.

A 41-year-old was arrested about 2km away at a filling station.

The four men would be charged with attempted bank robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and the unlawful possession of an electronic jamming device. They would appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate's Court soon, Chabangu said.

Jewellery store 'customer' holds staff up, steals his order

Jenna Etheridge, News24

Cape Town – A man was on the run on Wednesday after he ordered jewellery from a store in Century City and then decided to hold staff up, Western Cape police said.

He went to the jewellery store in the mall shortly after 08:00 to collect his order, which he had placed two days before, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut.

It is understood that the man targeted the American Swiss in Canal Walk.

While he was attended to by staff, he pulled out a gun and robbed the store of his order of jewellery pieces, as well as cash and a cellphone.

He then fled the scene.

Suspected robber killed at shopping centre opened by Zuma

News24 Correspondent

Johannesburg – A suspected robber was shot dead on Thursday during a failed heist at a shopping centre that was officially opened by President Jacob Zuma earlier this year.

The man, in his early 20s, was killed at the Dayizenza shopping centre in Mahushu, near Hazyview, Mpumalanga. The centre is owned by business tycoon and close Zuma friend, Norah Fakude-Nkuna.

"One suspect was shot dead during an exchange of fire between G4S security guards and the robbers," confirmed provincial police spokesman Sergeant Gerald Sedibe.

He said the suspects had disarmed one of the guards who had been collecting cash from a store at the centre.

"The suspects rushed to a waiting Ford Bantam, but the driver of the G4S cash-in-transit vehicle drove at the bakkie, bumped into it, and there was an exchange of gunfire. The driver of the bakkie, who was armed with a rifle, was fatally wounded," he said.

Sedibe added that a woman who had been shopping at the mall was shot and injured in the gunfire, but was recovering in hospital.

He said the suspects thereafter hijacked a minibus taxi.

Police gave chase, but the suspects shot at the police van's tyres, forcing it to a stop.

The taxi was later found abandoned near Pienaar.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects, has been asked to contact the police.

The shopping centre was established by Fakude-Nkuna who worked at a small curio shop on the original site more than 40 years ago.

Fakude, who chairs the provinces biggest bus company Buscor, officially opened the R190 million centre last year, but it was officially opened by Zuma in July this year.

The shopping centre serves residents of Mahushu and surrounding villages, including Numbi, Bhekiswako, Mganduzweni and Mphatseni.

In Dec 2013, two black fellows tried to wrench my wife's bag from her shoulder in the centre of Constantia Village. She shouted loudly, "stop, help,, bugger off". Two guards at the entrance of Pick n Pay hurriedly went the other way out of sight. Two young guys came running out the photo shop and one tackled the one black while the other ran away. A lady from Pick n Pay came to her assistance and bandaged up her shoulder (it was badly bruised).

What annoyed her the most was the sanctimonius centre management who came to see her while she was still n Pick a Pay. "Please let us deal with this" they said, "there is no need to notify the Police". She asked about the CCTV and was told the cameras are not connected. She found the following week that this is untrue. When calling the Centre management about this, they would not take her call

Cavendish robbery: Smoke bomb was released

Cape Town - Armed robbers hit a jewellery shop in the upmarket Cavendish Square in Claremont on Sunday morning.

This is the second time in six months that Trigg Jewellers had been robbed.

It is believed that staff at the shop were held at gunpoint and a smoke bomb was released when the alarm was activated.

According to eye witnesses, at least four armed men barged into the store and demanded all customers to lie on the floor.

The robbers fired several shots as they left the store and made an escape.

Panicked shoppers ducked for cover as shots rang out.
