Durban cop survives hail of gunfire at jewellery heist

Durban - A Phoenix police officer came under a hail of gunfire after he inadvertently interrupted a jewellery store heist at Phoenix Plaza in Durban late on Monday night.

While his police vehicle was peppered with bullet holes, the officer managed to emerge unscathed.

Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said the policeman had been patrolling Pandora Street when he noticed two suspicious vehicles parked at the shopping centre.

"He then stopped his vehicle and the suspects opened fire in his direction while fleeing the scene," he said.

"He [the officer] jumped from the vehicle and called for backup," Magudulela said adding that the officer had sustained injuries to his knees as he jumped out of his vehicle.

A case of attempted murder was opened for investigation. No arrests have been made yet.

Shoppers flee as armed robbers hit Pavilion mall

Durban - It was high drama at The Pavilion on Wednesday night when five men with pistols and a rifle robbed a jewellery shop.

Police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala said the men entered the shop about 6.30pm.

They demanded money and took jewellery.

“When they were about to exit the mall, they came across the security guards and fired shots. No injuries were sustained by the security guards,” she said.

A Durban man who was at the mall when the incident happened, Dylan Walsh, said when the shots were fired, one ricocheted off a pillar.

He had been window shopping and said foot traffic was not heavy at the time.

He was coming up from the movie theatres on the escalators when he heard people screaming and running.

The escalators stopped and people turned and ran.

“I heard a bang and knew it was gunfire because I am a sports shooter and I know what gunfire sounds like.

Glocell robbed at gunpoint

The Glocell store in Town Square at Constantia Shopping Centre was robbed in broad daylight on 9 June.

Willie Rheeder, an audiologist at Healthy Hearing, a neighbouring store in Town Square, saw the incident while he was taking a smoke break outside his store.

Rheeder explained it was around 11am when he saw two armed men run out of Glocell and jump into a white vehicle. Rheeder made his way over to Glocell and saw that the shop assistants had been tied up and the store had been robbed. He was also told that the criminals had assaulted an old woman that was in the store at the time.

Gateway mall jewellery store robbed

Durban – A brazen jewellery store robbery saw suspects open fire at the popular Gateway Mall on Wednesday, police said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela said three men entered the jewellery store at 09:30.

“They opened fire and took two boxes of jewellery and fled the scene in their grey BMW. The vehicle was later found abandoned at a construction site. It was established that it was hijacked in Berea on June 20, 2016. No injuries were sustained by the employees.”

Magudulela said no were arrests made, but police were still searching for the suspects. Magudulela added that police “did not know where the getaway vehicle was parked at this stage”.

He did not reveal the name of the jewellery store.

A case of business robbery has been opened at Durban North police station for investigation.

Cops nab KZN mall heist supects

Durban - Police have arrested four men believed to be part of a gang that robbed jewellery stores at the Gateway, Pavilion and Phoenix Plaza shopping centres.

The four, who appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, were believed to have been on their way to rob a jewellery store at Musgrave Shopping Centre when they were arrested.

2 shot in Free State mall heist

Free State - Two people were shot during an armed robbery at the Botshabelo Shopping Centre on Saturday.

Free State police in a statement said eight suspects struck at 08:00 when Fidelity security guards were delivering money.

"A man fired two shots in the corridors of [the] centre, hitting a woman and a man who were at an ATM," police said.

The gang escaped with two boxes of money in a silver BMW and a Honda.

The gunshot victims were receiving medical attention.

Security guard shot during robbery at local mall

A security officer is recovering in hospital after being critically injured in a shooting during an armed robbery on Saturday.

The G4S security officer and his partner were due to load cash into a Capitec Bank ATM at Kempton Square in the CBD when they were ambushed by seven robbers.

According to Ekurhuleni North Cluster Communication Officer, Capt Neldah Sekgobela, the incident occurred at about 11.30am.

“One of the security guards alighted from their vehicle to check whether it was safe for the money to brought out. After ensuring this, the guard went back to the vehicle to fetch his colleague,” Sekgobela said in a statement.

“As they walked towards the ATM, three men grabbed one of the security guards, pushed him against the wall and took his 9mm pistol at gun point.”

Mall robbers still on the run

The search is still on for robbers who hit two Incredible Connection shops in Pretoria last month.

Incredible Connection at Mall@Reds and Atterbury Value Mart were robbed in a space of two days by armed men.

On Tuesday, police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said, “Investigations are still ongoing. Police are keeping an eye on shopping centres and malls.”

On 17 August, an Incredible Connection store at Mall@Reds was robbed by a group of six armed men.

Armed robbery at Mall of the South

AN armed robbery took place at Mall of the South, when three armed men approached the manager and shop assistant at the Samsung store at 19:00 on Tuesday, September 6, as the store was about to close.

The manager and assistant were asked for the safe and store room keys and were ordered to lie down and were tied up with cable ties.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and the armed men untied the shop assistant and ordered him to assist them in loading up a shopping trolley with items from the storeroom, including TVs , tablets and cellphones. The sales assistant was then again tied up and ordered to lie down.

BREAKING NEWS!!! Robbery at mall

POLOKWANE – According to information received a robbery took place at a store in Mall of the North this morning (Thursday).

Representative of the owners of Mall of the North, Suzan Tempel, can confirm that there was such an incident.

Suspects entered Telkom store and demanded the staff handover goods. The value of the stolen goods is not yet known and investigations continue says Tempel.
