Durban cop survives hail of gunfire at jewellery heist
Durban - A Phoenix police officer came under a hail of gunfire after he inadvertently interrupted a jewellery store heist at Phoenix Plaza in Durban late on Monday night.
While his police vehicle was peppered with bullet holes, the officer managed to emerge unscathed.
Police spokesperson Shooz Magudulela said the policeman had been patrolling Pandora Street when he noticed two suspicious vehicles parked at the shopping centre.
"He then stopped his vehicle and the suspects opened fire in his direction while fleeing the scene," he said.
"He [the officer] jumped from the vehicle and called for backup," Magudulela said adding that the officer had sustained injuries to his knees as he jumped out of his vehicle.
A case of attempted murder was opened for investigation. No arrests have been made yet.
