Revealed: The sneaky ploy police used to nab the suspected Springs mall gunmen

Police caught all four men involved in a shootout at the Springs mall in Ekhurleni on Thursday after using the first two suspects they'd arrested to call their friends 'for a lift'.

When they dutifully arrived to fetch them‚ they were promptly taken into police custody. Captain Thabo Sibuyi said there was already a heavy police presence at the mall following a robbery on Wednesday. This allowed the police to respond quickly after four men robbed a store‚ taking a cell phone from the owner.

UPDATE: Northmead Square robbery leaves onlooker ‘dumbstruck’

JJ Jewellers was targeted by at least four men this morning.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster SAPS spokesperson, said four men entered the store at around 11.40am.

Sekele said the owner and two co-workers were at the business when the men entered and started smashing a counter containing jewellery.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said she was “dumbstuck” when she saw the crime being committed metres from her.

“It felt like an out-of-body experience,” she said.

The onlooker saw one man with a hammer smashing the cabinet, while three others grabbed valuables.

“It was so bloody organised: one smashed and the others grabbed – and they took lots; they had arms full.”

Clicks here in Eastgate was just hit. Came back from a smoke on the roof parking and this lady came out running and screaming. A guy with a head wound came out looking very dazed. Securty was alerted and I ran back quick to fetch a paramedic for him. They said the guys are still inside. Dont know what is happening since. We inside shops with doors locked.

Mall has returned to normal. Shops are all open in this section. Went up just now quickly to ER24 room to see if he is OK. The guy and the two ladies were sitting there looking very dazed. His head has been bandaged. Police came walking past me having a smoke on the roof after checking in on the injured guy with their guns. Dont think they have caught the buggers though. The understanding is that the perps entered Clicks wearing clicks uniforms.
 
Armed robbers storm East Rand diamond store

Gauteng police have confirmed an armed robbery at a jewellery store at Lakeside Mall in Benoni on the East Rand at around noon on Sunday.

According to police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele three men entered the store armed with rifles.

“We understand the men made off with jewellery of which the value is unknown at this stage. They fled in a white VW Polo and a white Mercedes Benz‚” he said.
No shots were fired.

Benoni City Times meanwhile has reported that the mall’s general manager Chantell Roemer said Hayward Diamonds was targeted.

This is the second jewellery store robbery in Benoni recently.

Hyde Park armed robbers flee with high-end merchandise

Johannesburg - Six armed men robbed a luxury boutique in the Hyde Park Corner mall of high-end watches on Thursday morning, police said.

They got away with thousands of rands worth of stock around 10:00.

Their target was the Boutique Haute Horlogerie, which stocks brands including Audemars, Parmigiani Tonda, Zenith El Primero, and Dior VIII Montaigne.

A shell-shocked staff member at a nearby restaurant said she hoped security was increased around the mall because it was not the first robbery.

She said customers lay down on the floor when a gunshot rang out in the mall. Waiters dropped food as they fled for safety.

Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said no one was injured.

“They managed to run away with jewellery worth thousands of rands. We are at the scene now collecting some evidence.”

Detective Warrant Officer Richard Maseko said they were waiting for the store to give them a list of the goods stolen.

Centre management said there was CCTV footage of the robbery. It was still unknown how much the suspects made off with.

The robbers were still at large.

Two KZN malls robbed in one day

NWJ jewellery store at Westwood Mall were being robbed at gunpoint at about 10am.

The shop was forced to close and a notice went up at the entrance saying it was closed for “stock-taking”.

A security guard said he was patrolling near the jewellery shop when he saw two men coming up on the escalator.

They were then joined by another man and they all walked towards the American Swiss shop, but did not enter it.

“When I saw them coming back towards another jewellery shop, I suspected something was wrong and called for back-up. They entered the shop, but I could not see what was going on from where I was.

“More guards rushed towards the shop, but we were too late. We gave chase, but the suspects got away,” he said.

Staff refused to speak to the media.

Five held for Hyde Park jewellery store robbery

Johannesburg – Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant-General Deliwe de Lange, on Monday said five people thought to be involved in the robbery at a jewellery shop in Hyde Park last week had been arrested.

On Thursday a group of armed men stormed a jewellery store at Hyde Park shopping centre and made off with jewellery worth thousands of rands. No one was injured during the robbery.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, on Monday said an intelligence-driven operation by the provincial trio task-team in Gauteng led to the swift arrest of five male suspects whose ages range from 23 to 36.

Robber targets Athol Square Shopping Centre

JOHANNESBURG - There has been a robbery at Athol Square Shopping Centre in Joburg, according to 702 and Cape Talk presenter Eusebius McKaiser.

McKaiser says the suspects robbed a Sorbet store in the centre.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle with registration number CC 48 BV GP.

The same suspect, using the same vehicle, has reportedly just held up Bellinis Restaurant in Illovo.

According to shoppers, the robbers followed a woman into the salon and demanded she hands over her jewellery.

. Armed robbers shoot 2 at Festival Mall in Kempton Park


Johannesburg - Two people were shot after a group of armed robbers stormed a jewellery store in Kempton Park on Monday afternoon, police said.

Captain Kay Makhubela said a group of five men entered the jewellery store at the Festival Mall around 14:00.

"They jumped over the counter and tried to rob jewellery. The owner of the shop then came out and opened fire at them. They fled the shop with some jewellery," Makhubela said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics had arrived on the scene and found a security guard lying in the parking lot of the mall.

He had been shot in the chest and was in a critical condition.

Makhubela said the men had shot the security guard on their way out.

Meiring said a second patient, a woman, was found in a jewellery store in the mall.

She had been shot in her leg.

Paramedics treated both patients and provided the security guard with advanced life support interventions. Both were transported to Arwyp Medical Centre for further treatment.

. Alleged robber shot in heist appears in court

Johannesburg – One of the two armed robbers shot during a gunfight with police while robbing a jewellery store on Friday at the Oak Center in Mpumalanga, is expected to appear at the Ermelo Magistrate's court on Monday.

His accomplice was severely injured during the shootout died on the scene.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard, Hlathi said two armed men went into the jewellery shop.

"They held the employees as well as the client at gun point and thereafter helped themselves with the jewellery," said Hlathi.
