Johannesburg - "I am glad that everyone who was here last night is still alive," said a relieved Emmanuel Masuku, the manager of the Ottawa Spur in Edenvale's Karaglen Shopping Centre, after four armed robbers struck the restaurant on Monday evening.
They fled with at least R20 000 in cash, as well as cellphones belonging to customers and staff, Netwerk24 reported.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele confirmed on Wednesday evening that one suspect had been arrested.
According to Masuku, the robbers had nonchalantly eaten and had drinks before they struck.
"They came in and sat at different tables. Then they ordered food and drinks. The last guy sat on his own. I immediately thought he looked suspicious, but one thinks one is unnecessarily paranoid, so I ignored the feeling," said Masuku.
The suspect at some stage stood up and walked past Masuku towards the toilets.
"He all of a sudden stopped and asked: 'Do you know who I am?' When I looked at him surprisingly, he lifted his jacket ever so slightly and I could see his firearm. I immediately realised what was happening and that I had to keep my wits about me."
Masuku was forced to open the cash register, from which he had to take the safe's key. "I haven't a clue how he knew the key was in there."
A GANG of armed robbers stole an estimated R1-million worth of jewellery and cash from a store in Westville Mall earlier today.
Captain Elizabeth Squires of the Westville SAPS confirmed the incident and noted one of the men was wearing a long shirt and what appeared to be a wig.
“Five robbers, of which two were armed, entered the shop at 11.40am. They demanded the keys to open all of the display cases where the jewellery is kept,” said Squires.
Four suspects have robbed the Telkom shop in Springs Mall in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday morning, Springs Advertiserreports.
The Telkom offices at the mall were robbed of iPhones and other equipment.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora says four men, two armed with firearms, stormed into the Telkom shop at about 10.40am. They informed staff members, who were attending to clients, to move to the store room.
“Two of the suspects then forced the staff and clients into the store room,” said Ramphora.
These two unarmed suspects stripped the store of its stock.
Cape Town - Shoppers at the Kenilworth Centre in Claremont got a shock on Friday when brazen robbers stormed into the Telkom store, held up staff and stole cellphones and tablets.
A worker at the mall says the incident happened shortly before 5pm.
“I came past the store so 5pm, and saw the commotion. The men were masked and wearing sunglasses and were pointing guns at the staff to open the cabinets and the storeroom. They were loading the cellphones into bags already,” she explains.
“They were pulling the people around and pointing the guns at them and I thought they are going to shoot them. I ran to get the security, but as I stepped away, they suddenly all headed for the door.”

During the night of 19 and 20 September a roadblock was held outside Uniondale. At about 00:30 on Wednesday 20 September a Toyota Quantum minibus stopped approximately 500 metres from the roadblock and put off its lights.
A patrol vehicle went to inspect the vehicle. Six African males in the vehicle were escorted to the patrol vehicle. Their vehicle was searched and various cellphones and iPhones were found. One handgun was discovered hidden under the driver’s seat and another under a passenger's seat.
During the search, two of the suspects managed to fled into a field. Upon further investigation, a number plate was found lying next to the roadside. Dog handlers searched the area and found a third firearm and magazine with six live rounds lying in the field the suspects fled into.
There was another suspect, which the police was unaware of, that got off the minibus before it approached the roadblock. A total of three suspects were arrested at the roadblock.
Two of the suspects that ran away, were arrested on 20 September, initially as illegal immigrants. When they arrived at the police station they were identified as two of the suspects that fled from the roadblock the previous night.
Later that day, two more suspects were also arrested in Uniondale, bringing the total number of arrested suspects to seven.
The cellphone that was seized at the roadblock was connected with the phones that were stolen at the Telkom cellphone shop in Stellenbosch on 19 September.
The seven men, who are all Zimbabwean citizens, appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court yesterday for the possession of stolen property and the illegal possession of firearms.
