The Shroom Thread

You are lucky on the lack on contamination I'm getting a lot even with pressure cooking for two hours. You should check up on endospores in grain, they recommend a 24 hour soak to be safe. I still need a still air box in the future. For the bulk substrate I also just use boiling water in a bucket but I use a coir/vermiculite mixture.
Sometimes I do a longer soak. But I always do a minimum of 8 hours.

I find that jars have a sour smell when I open them, which does indicate some bacterial growth. But that is never enough to stop mycelium growth. When mycelium gets strong enough, it can easily overcome bacteria.

So, what I've done in the past for example, is had a jar with areas that would not colonise due to obvious bacterial contamination. No strange colours or slime, but a sour smell and too much wetness. Anyway, I just remove that, keep the rest of the mycelium, and mix that into coir for a monotub grow. Works fine. Within a few days, the mycelium has started growing again, and soon colonises the tub.

My single biggest problem is getting spores to germinate and colonise jars or plastic containers. Once I get past that point, I'm usually fine. Actually I also struggle with getting high yields, but I've got some ideas to improve that around air circulation.

I'm sticking to popcorn for now so much easier. I've tried bird seed but they all seem to have broken corn which leaks starch all over and then the jar is basically useless. You should look into agar so much easier. Do you buy cultures all the time or do you make your own liquid culture? If you're making your own jars you can squirt quite a lot into your jars but I still prefer agar.

I don't use agar because I'm lazy! You have to be really clean and careful for that.

I just buy new spore syringes from time to time, although I think I will start taking spore prints because it is cheaper.

Liquid culture is illegal to buy, because it is active mycelium suspended in water. Spore water is legal, because spores are legal. I will never buy liquid culture in case the police get a list of everyone who bought it. So I only buy spores.

First off I'm no expert but I've been wondering about this, I buy syringes from sporespot which is the only option on most of the strains, they say it's spores but it definitely looks like live culture. Also you will have contamination from spore prints as well as spore syringes because it not done in a sterile environment which is why you grow it out on agar and clean it up each step but I also never get contamination from syringe to jars which makes me think it's liquid culture.

I don't bother, no.

For bulk substrates like coco coir, I just add boiling water. But the truth is, I'm not sure that is even necessary for coir. I mean, I have coir that has been sitting in a bucket for months now, and it hasn't grown any contamination.

For substrates like brown rice or rye grain, I soak it for 8 hours, and then boil it for 10 minutes. After that, I used to put it into glass jars, and I would pressure cook it. But its a pain in the ass. So sometimes I'd just put the jars into a regular pot, and cook them in longer. To do that, you add a dish cloth to the bottom of the pot (no contact between jars and pot!), add water until about half way up the jars, put the lid on, and boil for about an hour and a half.

Lately, I use the microwave method. I bought premade containers, that are round, hold 0.5l, made of plastic, and have injection ports and filter strips at the top. The filter strips allow for slow gaseous exchange, although VERY slow. Anyway, with those, I fill them with cooked grain, then microwave them for 1 minute to 1.5 minutes. Too long and the top pops.

With that method, I had 0 contamination rate out of 10.

I don't tend to have many contamination problems. I think the risk of contamination is a little overblown actually. What I struggle with is getting decent germination rates, and I'm not sure why. But I think it is down to moisture balance.
Thanks for the detailed reply.

I am just starting out growing and tried a couple of TEKs, the brokeboi which is basically what you described as steaming the jars in the pot. Unfortunately, I had that issue with the rice becoming overly wet, and having the sour smell and the mycelium basically halted growth.

I am trying the uncle bens TEK now, so I just bought a couple of woolies instant rice packs and I inoculated them. It is still germinating but I have 4/5 contam free so far so that's decent, I guess.

When you steam the jars in a pot, do you cover them loosely with foil? I cover them with two layers of foil. This means that steam won't drip down into the jars.

Hi, how did you ensure that the room you are using is properly sterilized?

Very new to the forum so I hope this question is allowed

I'm still doing research on growing and fruiting and all that. And one thing they all say is that to avoid contaminants the working area and room should be very clean.

Interest to know how others have done that.

And @Ancalagon what do you do to avoid contaminants

@AmeG

Basically the biggest risk of contaminants is in the early stages. When you're starting from spores, they aren't robust enough to compete against anything. So, you do need to sterilise the medium that you use for germination.

An important thing to remember about this is that, you put the medium into the container and seal it, then you sterilise that. This means you have a sterilised container with nothing living inside it. No bacteria, no fungal spores of any kind.

If you were to take this container (jar or otherwise) and leave it somewhere for 2 weeks, it would not rot. It should not rot. Rotting only happens when there is bacteria present. So, if you've done your job properly, it won't rot. The same bacteria that causes rotting is the same bacteria that would outcompete your mushroom spores.

That's a bit of the why you do what you have do. The way I avoid contamination is by sterilising a sealed container container a growing medium, and then injecting spores in. If you move your syringe from one container to another, use a lighter to burn away anything on the tip of the needle. I do that, and I've had very few problems. No flow box needed.

Maybe I'm just incredibly lucky, but I think the risk of contamination is overstated. I just don't think it is that common. And, to add to that, sometimes I have colonised jars, and I open them, and get a sour smell. A sour smell means that there are bacteria in there. But the thing is, it doesn't matter. It has never been enough to keep me from eventually getting fruits. And none of those fruits have been toxic in anyway.

The reason for this is that, when mushroom mycelium gets mature enough, it has enough of an immune system that it can fight off bacteria and to some degree moulds. So, a little sour smell won't kill it. Just don't eat that part, and don't put it into your grow box.

This becomes even more true when you mix everything together into a monobox to fruit. It would be absolutely impossible to prevent contamination once you put everything into fruiting conditions. There are bacteria everywhere in an ordinary house. So, the reason why this isn't a problem, is again that mature mycelium can fight it off.

But there is one other secret - coir. Coir is anti bacterial. I have never had coir get infected by bacteria. You can keep it moist and in a dark place exposed to bacteria for years, and it will never smell. There just isn't enough food for bacteria in it. This means that, when you make a monotub containing coir, it severely limits bacterial contamination. Maybe the odd grain of rye will catch some bacteria, but it can't spread. Its surrounded by coir. Nothing for it to eat on the way to the next rye grain, and if it runs into mycelium, it can't invade that either. Too well protected.

Thank you for the explanation. It really cleared out other questions I had.

I intend to use pre mixed pf tek kit and bulk grow combo which actually includes coco coir
I've been delaying a little so I could research how growers actually avoid contaminants overall

Can't wait to start growing

So I have three. I'm contemplating taking it tonight or tomorrow morning. I haven't used in years, so I'm looking forward to it. Any suggestions? I usually start with music and get into things. My main reason this time around is not to hallucinate, although I will not say no to that, but this is more about healing, being positive, figuring things out etc. I thought I should try some of those silly "affirmation" music and videos on YouTube as well. I thought about audio hypnosis. Anyone tried such things?

I would suggest taking them tomorrow morning without eating anything before. Try it in tea form I find it a lot easier than eating it. I would actually suggest no music, no technology, no distractions, just do nothing until onset. Some sort of self-hypnosis is definitely possible, I use it to access memories mostly but I find it semi-difficult at times to stay in only one place and then lose focus. Pleasant journey.

Music & chill.
Enjoy!

Here in the Kruger and decided fk it I will hit some shrooms here and nobody will be none the wiser. Then the whole dinner thing came and it felt like everyone was staring at me while I was eating. Then boom behind all these people I just see some shroom like patterns behind them. That's when I realised this shyt is kicking in now . Had to like tell my brain just eat quick and gtfo(remember this is like military thinking shyt trying to act normal and talk to people) . Potato salad was good but probably will shyt out whole potatoes at the pace I went getting them down. Sky was amazing and you know people pointing out stuff and I am like yeah I see it... Meanwhile everything is just bright and amazing and I have no idea wtf you pointing at... Too many stars bro

My grow is going decently (I think). I cased it a little early, so it is difficult to see what is going on underneath the surface. Casing is a top layer used to increase humidity, which helps fruiting. Anyway, I dug down into the substrate (naughty me), and found good mycelium down there. I think its a little too wet, so I won't mist it until it fruits.

But I'm happy to have good mycelium. It bodes well for fruiting. Hopefully in a few days.

I've now got thermostat controlled heating to keep the temperature at about 25C, and digital timers to run fans for 2 minutes every few hours. The tubs are loosely covered to keep humidity above 90%.

Also, I'm thinking of taking a solo holiday in South Africa over December/January. I mean, for a few days. Most of the time will be spent with family, but a few days might be spent alone in the mountains somewhere. So, I might buy some shrooms.

I'd need to buy shrooms because I live in London, and there is no way that I'd bring shrooms across an international border.

I learned my lesson when I took magic truffles alone in Amsterdam. Being around so many people stressed me out. I had nowhere that I could just go and trip. I was staying in a hostel, not a hotel, so I didn't have a private room.

Bad bad idea. After that, I never trip around people I don't know. Microdose or light dose, sure, it won't do much. But a heavy dose is a bad idea around groups of people who don't know that you are tripping.

If you're coming to Cape Town I can hook you up.
