The Silver Surfer Thread (iBurst 2Mbps Modem)

Ok great. I think I'll hit the shops tomorrow to get a router. The iBurst modem should come with a WAN cable, correct? Do you think it will be easy enough to configure all of this? I'm most likely going to go with this one http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=32_85&products_id=651 which was suggested on the previous page. There was another one http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=32_85&products_id=423 but I should get away with the cheaper one? It seems to have what I need. 1 x WAN, 4 X LAN.

For some strange reason it is only PS3/PS4 downloads that are sometimes corrupted. Xbox 360 and PC have never failed to download over iBurst. Weird, but hoping to fix it with this new setup. You can set MTU on PS4, so I will try direct connection sometime just to see if it works.

This is more for downloads rather than online gaming. I very rarely play online (some Halo which was actually surprisingly fine), but I just want patches and smaller games really.

Really appreciate the help! :)

Yes it comes with the cable in the box the only way 2 connect the 2Meg modem is with one the router should come with one 2 and i assume you already had one so there's 3 :)
Yep the cheaper one will be fine - The blue port is the WAN port :)

Most routers are pretty easy to set up (As long as its not a mikrotik that one made me start losing my hair!) just read the manual (Page 10 use WAN only) you should be OK if not post here.

Great! I am about to order the router :)

I'll most certainly give it my best shot before asking for help here.

Thanks again!

Sorry... last question (promise!)

I can expect to get the same signal with my 2mb modem that I got with the 1mb? I just want to make sure I shouldn't tell the guy to throw in the Omni antenna and splitter before sending. Although living in a flat I doubt I'd be able to install it anyway... But I shouldn't have a drop in signal quality? I am right by the tower and always have 100% signal with reasonably low frame rate error.

Yup.

The splitter actually halves the signal going to each antenna on your modem, so if you don't need the external antenna, you are better off without it.

Hey guys,

My modem and new router arrived this morning :)

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I already have a question... :o

What Ethernet cables do I need? I currently have 2 crossover and the one straight that came with the modem. I assume the straight one will be for the modem to router via WAN, but will the crossover ones work for going from LAN to my PS3 and LAN to my PC?

Hope I've explained the above fine. The reason I ask before trying it myself is I'd rather nip out and get the right cables rather than trying at 5 this afternoon and being stuck unable to use it till tomorrow morning.

You need three straight-through cables, but if your router supports Auto MDI/MDI-X it will detect that the cable is crossed and correct for it.

Sorry guys! I looked at the specs on a different site and couldn't find that anywhere. Thank you very much.

I'm back...

Modem is working. Now to add the router to the mix. One thing I am unsure of, and excuse me if this is a stupid question but does the modem or router need to be in the optimal position signal wise? What I mean is usually I had my 1mb modem in a certain spot for the best signal, so must the new modem go there or the router?

Also I see the iBurst terminal UTI for monitoring signal and frame rate doesn't work with this modem. Is there a new one I could get? I will get eyeburst but is there an official one I could use for now?

First connect the iBurst modem to your laptop, and using eyeBurst, find the best spot your modem.
Then place the wireless router somewhere central that will give you the best wifi coverage. The Ethernet cable between the modem and the router can be up to 100m long.

You won't be able to use any monitoring software through your router unless it allows you to set a local IP address (192.168.250.1) on the WAN port.
I don't think you can do this with the stock TP-Link firmware, but it may be possible with the ROOter firmware.

Ok cool, thank you. Going to do that now. So just to confirm it is the placement of the router that's important once I have tested where to place it using the modem's positioning with eyeburst?

I have downloaded eyeburst but can't for the life of me figure out how to get data to display. I have checked the eyeburst thread but still no luck :(

I'm in Sea Point, Cape Town. I was once told by iBurst that the tower is near the Ritz which is a minute walk from me. I am getting 1.85 is speed test but obviously I want to make sure that's the absolute best I can get.

Looking at the speed test thread, my speeds seem to be pretty decent so I guess I'll move on and get the Router going and fiddle with Eyeburst later.

I see you chose the TP-link modem.
Just to confirm for others interested in the router, does that router work well with the 2Mb iburst modem?
Is the connection solid, or does it drop/restart once in awhile?
What's the range like?

It is all working beautifully. The place I bought it from said I wasn't the first to buy it specifically for use with the iBurst modem. The person who recommended it to me on this thread also said it worked well with their iBurst. I haven't had any drops or restarts yet. Downloaded something on my PS4 and it worked fine, as well as something over WiFi overnight and that worked as well. Very happy. I still need to move it around a bit but I'm getting between 1.75 and 1.90 in speed tests.

One thing I am not sure of is if it is unwise to have the modem and router right next to each-other? Are they likely to cause interference?

Personally, I've never had any issues with my 1Mb desktop modem siting right next to my TP-Link router, so I don't see why not.
