The Silver Surfer Thread (iBurst 2Mbps Modem)

That Speedtest result was from April last year.
OK, so the following bit about your antenna is just here to throw people off?
Oh, and that 2.12Mbps Speedtest result in the previous post, that was with NO external antenna and the modem sitting on a windowsill.
So running at half the speed with a fancy antenna. Does that seem fair? Hell no.....

Do you by any chance happen to have a 1Mbps iBurst modem you can test at your location? I recall some posts where people seem to be getting faster connections on the 1Mbps modem than on the 2Mbps modem.

No it is not to throw people off.

Simplified version -

Before end-November/beginning-December 2011, speeds were regularly above 2Mbps even during the day and during rain or storms. There are loads of Speedtest results where I used to rave about the decent speeds, go check through all my posts and see for yourself.
New packages were released, and download speeds slow to less than dial-up speeds and plainly suck.
I moan and complain a lot. Then some more. And some more.
Techies fit a flat panel antenna on a 3 metre high pole on the roof of our house after spending 4+ hours checking signal strength from all the towers in the area.
Speeds are now half of what they used to be (ie 1Mbps) before the new packages were released.
Different modems have been tried, all with the same results.

Simple enough explanation?

And our old 1Mb modem does +-0.5Mbps during the day and a max of 0.9Mbps at night. And this modem has an Omni antenna fitted to the loo vent pipe on the roof.

So, are the 2Mb modems being throttled for some reason or is there some other reason for the crap download speeds?

simply overloaded tower, and full shaded......

BTW using BSCC 4 tower here in PTA north, daytime speed is just crap, not even mentioning the download, the carry over is just accumulating more and more.

From alot of post, similar situation has been seem, many people want to iburst to get help, all we get is nothing but "can i appoint you a technician" or "we having problem with our tower" or "we busy upgrading the infrastructure"

What does your 2Mbps modem get using the splitter and the same antenna at similar times of the day and night?

Even played with MTU settings via DrTCP.

Yup. And the one post I put up on their FB page has simply been ignored for 7 days now. Yes, you read that right, one whole freaking week and not a single reply from anyone at iBurst.

Please can someone from iBurst tell us what the heck is going on with your service levels and more importantly why the speeds on the 2Mb modems are so slow? And don't come with BS stories that there is no known issue, there ARE issues.

If I stop the stop-order for iBurst, you will throw hissy fits and get lawyers on our case for not paying.
Should we band together and get lawyers letters thrown your way for shoddy service levels and crap download speeds we pay for but don't receive? Fair's fair.

Will iBurst charge us half the price we are currently paying for the 2Mb modem seeing as it can only do half the speed it used to do? Not a chance.

And their IS a problem with crap speeds since the new packages were released, do not try deny it. Overloaded towers galore are the culprits.

Go look on your FB page and on Hellopeter and see all the complaints about slow speeds, and carefully check the dates and see that all this started just after the new packages were released. Well the ones on FB that haven't been deleted yet.......

Rant over.

Hey all,

Some info on my side:
Windows 7 64 bit, running silver surfer off direct LAN connection to PC.
I'm in Broadacres Johannesburg(behind Fourways) in a complex with no Telkom.
Modem itself has Blue and Green lights on.
Signal is reported @ 100% through the modem interface (that yellow bar thingy)

The problem I have is ping to local servers. Specifically, and probably most embarrassing, to the iGame servers for BF3.
I can play for a couple of minutes, usually less than about 5, only to be disconnected due to server connection timeouts.
This doesn't happen to SGS or MWEB servers however, but on those I have ping spikes like crazy...from 44ms to 1234ms have been seen to happen, with the majority of the time spent at roughly 65-85ms in game.

I've gone on a hunt for the perfect MTU settings, where packets won't need fragmenting...Most people recommend an MTU of about 1352 / 1395 for iburst. I find the max I can transmit is about 1100 without failure.

What stumps me however is that I can download through Free Download Manager at 204 KB/s no hassle.
In fact, I pulled a bunch of stuff last night at 224KB/s without a hitch.

I used to have the single orange modem and that worked without any issues, so I'm left to believe that sticking the two modems together left us with something slightly less effective.

If anyone wishes to have me trouble shoot or test, pls feel free to PM. I'll check results and post whats necessary.

Later

PS: Some test results from speedtest.net

And back to MTU 1392:

And this is about the fastest it will go. So, can I ask for a half price monthly payment on the 2Mb modem seeing as it can only do half the speed?

You're paying for the modem? I got mine free of charge with the contract renewal with no additional monthly fees I guess they realised the 2mb modem was released before it's time. If I hadn't kept the old one I'd seriously be pissed off.

Howto update firmare?

Whats the trick to updating the firmware?

A helpful chap from iBurst said I should apply the firemare updates.
I connected my PC directly via ethernet to the modem. Downloaded the firmware exe.
All it does is say I need administrator privilages. I tried run as admin. Tried compatibility mode for XP.

I running Windows7 x64.

I also installed the Terminal UTL software, but that doesn't seem to connect.

Thanks

I eventually solved my problem.
After trying everything under the sun: disabling UAC, taking ownership of the file, etc etc.
I eventually logged in as a user called 'administrator' ...and now the firmware exe was happy.

Seems to be an administrator you actually have to be called administrator...lol

 Windows is retarded.

Hi

I must renew my iburst contract and have the option to get the 2mb modem for R120 extra a month.
My speed according to speedtest.net is 0.79 Mbps
So is it worth the extra R120, will my speeds actually increase allot?
Or must I just stay with the 1mb modem?

Thanks.
