The Situation in Alex

Over the past few days I've heard residents of Alex spewing a bunch of crud regarding foreigners staying in Alex. Things like foreigners stealing jobs, women (WTF? :confused:), causing corruption (pot...kettle...black :rolleyes:).

Some poor foreign oke had his tuck shop looted by these residents. Having a tuck shop seems like an honest living to me, I don't get why people would turn to violence based on where you come from. Makes 0 sense to me..

Then I saw pictures and a short clip of some guy sitting in Alex with a NOOSE! Are we back in the 1800s or what? :mad:

Another man said that they weren't JUST gonna attack foreigners, they were going to KILL them. The reason? They're sick of the crime that foreigners perpetrate! hahaha...fighting crime with murder, yeah that'll work.

Then there was this gem by some dumbass schoolgirl: she said she wants the foreigners gone because school is overcrowded with them. *shakes head* Maybe if she spent less time behaving like an animal attacking foreigners and more time studying she'd be able to string together a coherent sentence. :rolleyes:

What do you guys (and girls) think of the situation? Is the Xenophobia justified or not?
 
Unjustified, totally.

The majority of foreigners are here for honest work - and is willing to work for a lower salary - and (I'll assume) does better work than the local guys.
 
I don't know, hey... I'm in two minds here...

1) If the foreigners are here legally and doing good work and not bothering people, sure, let them stay
2) If they're not, well, then the police should deport them. But the police don't do anything about them. If the police don't do their jobs, citizens are forced to do it for them. Reminds me of the whole smash-and-grab-shooting incident a few months back.
 
Stupid people.... what they dont realise is that we really need doctors from the DRC, Zim etc.. they are to blind to see that South African doctors are leaving the coutry so fast its not even funny.

Sincerely doubt a doctor is living in those affected areas.

Xenophobia is never justified.

There is an anger at the current state of affairs, that anger is being directed at the people who are least capable of defending themselves - foreigners.

People who engage in violence against foreigners are making a tacit admission of their own personal failure. People like the neo-Nazis in the former East Germany, the fascists of Le Penn, the National Front of Britain and the locals of Alex all have one thing in common - hatred of people who will try and do better than them.

Why do you hate someone from Somalia because he opens a shop in your neighbourhood? What exactly is he stealing? Your township has 50 000 people who all have an equal opportunity to open businesses, so why didn't you?
 
Another victim is Malawian Aseni Jandi (35), who was badly burned by an acid bomb in October last year. His South African attacker, who is known as Sandi, was not arrested and has since moved to trade on another street. Jandi is now partially disfigured.

“I was attacked over an empty bottle of cold drink. A guy lent me the bottle as I wanted to buy a cold drink. A few minutes later, he demanded that I return it.

“Later he realised that I had not finished drinking it, so he shouted at me, and also accused me of occupying a space that he said should be occupied by a South African citizen. The next thing I knew, he bought a bottle of acid, opened it and threw it at me. I felt enormous pain as my skin started to swell,” said Jandi.

Well if THOSE locals are going to kill foreigners because of them taking their jobs and causing a rise in crime, then I guess that justifies race crimes commited by whites on THOSE locals :rolleyes:

Dude, that is a messed up way of thinking and joking. :D

I remember my first week in Cape Town. A guy threatened to kill me because I was racking some leaves from my front yard. He claimed that was local work and not my work. Man, that really annoyed me. :mad:

Are the BBC/CNN covering this? Its pretty big news and also relates very indirectly to the plight of the people of Zim I guess.

and yes I can be annoyingly sarcastic at times, and I am well aware of it. Probably why I will die alone, and probably at the hands of someone who dislikes my brutal approach to honesty =P

Brutal honesty has been getting people crucified since the dawn of time =P But its also what changes the world.

there's a level of frustration in SA amongst the poor, that hasnt been addressed by the
Government.
I'd suggest folks look for and watch a BBC documentary, dealing with the rising xenophobia in SA, called 'The New Apartheid'.. from last year..

It was and is just a matter of time before things erupt as they have been.

As usual the government has suspiciously done nothing to reduce the potential for
massive slaughter, or take any solid steps to reduce the rising hatred of 'foreigners' amongst the majority population.

Therefore, having a potentially 'ready-to-rampage violently' mob, is something that the Government wants in existence.
Otherwise they would have defused and prevented this from reaching this point, ne?

Although again, this is just a tiny 'incident' relatively speaking, compared to an all-out genocidal attack on foreigners..
 
It is disgraceful and IMHO the people of Alex should hang their heads in shame. They seem to have forgotten how those "foreign" countries took them in when they fled from Apartheid.

Never blame on malice what can be explained by mere incompetence.
 
IMO the residents are using foreigners as a scape goat to justify their actions. The SAPS is pretty much ineffective and Government doesn't seem very interested in solving the problem either.
