The smartphone in 2011

blackberry left out intentionally?

It crossed my mind, but with respect to BB & its users, I wasn't impressed with the Torch. I tried it for a wee bit. Just could not get used to the weeny keys on the slide-out keyboard. :(

Most of my friends/family have BB's or are about to get 'em, so I am very much the odd one out. However, I look at their phones and the operating system/s do not have the good feel I get from Android.

That said, I do hope that BB do find a way to get over the hurdle and make an impact in this market-space.

I was also like wtf?! I love my Torch. As a matter of fact, this is the longest Ive had a phone without buying a new one. The Torch is the most useful and cost effective phone Ive ever had and its also my first Blackberry. I also used to be a hater till I saw the light. Blackberry is of no use to people who dont have lots of friends or a social life (if youre youngish) which is why its hated on so hard in places like MyBB.

I don't think BB is hated on MyBB. I have seen many users discuss their love for their BB's.

Your views are interesting. Don't agree that is only for those who are socialites  My work has indirectly endorsed it's use by providing a server to allow staff to access their work email from their BB's. So many of our management/senior management have a BB. Also many of our staff work externally/on the road and they have BB's too. I think it's a great work or social tool.

On the social side, my missus is attached at the hip to her Curve. She's forever chatting to mates and sister on it.

I just couldn't to grips with BB6 as an operating system.

That is like saying you dont like vw cos u drived a golf.... Torch is not for every one, had one myself... to test bb u need to use a device like the Bold 9700.
I found the torch too heavy, drained too much battery and keyboard too small... so now im back on a bold 9700 with a version of OS6 for the 9700

Torch keyboard was one the major factors which turned me away. It felt like BB were trying too hard to compromise.

It is all a matter of perspective - The Torch is my first BB and I am a total convert, the keyboard being one of the "key" attributes. However, coming from Symbian, my standards might have been low. However, I have spent a lot of time with both the iPhone and Galaxy, and have come to the conclusion that the Blackberry is the only true smartphone, whereas all the quoted ones in the article should rather be branded as multimedia phones.

Should BB be part of the article? - without a doubt, whatever your allegiance!

After the disaster that is my Samsung Omnia I'm going back to dumb phones. Smart phones are great toys to play with and show off but after a few months you just need a phone and that is where they seem to fall over (I have yet to use a touchscreen smartphone that doesn't annoy me when trying to make amd recieve calls. The worst is with those "Press 1 for..." callcentre robot things. You have to use the speakerphone and continually unlock the onscreen keypad.

Smart phones are for smart people;)

Nokia won't be going with Android or WinMo, they've got their own OS...Meego. And I also feel Blackberry should have been given a chance even though I don't really like them.

Leave Beyonce's lovely boobies alone - it is not applicable here.

2011 will be a crucial year for Nokia which has slipped from being a dominant player to one desperately trying to keep up.
Strange - they still have the leading market share for smartphones. This seems a bit biased.

The question that most will have of their mind is whether Nokia will eventually opt for a line of Android-based phones or throw its lot in with Microsoft.
Then the question most have on their mind is a very stupid question. They have Symbian^3 and MeeGo with features and agility that exceeds any offering from the competition.

Please explain what features they have exceed Android/WinMo 7. I'm a Nokia fanboy, having had Symbian phones since the early days. But now I'm starting to think of getting an Android device instead of the N8 when I have to upgrade.

If you insist... to name but a few : USB on the go, HDMI out, free voice navigation for life (even in Afrikaans if you like), superior imaging, flexible mass storage mode, much better build quality.

only < 1% of complaints towards apple for the iPhone 4 were regarding antenna issues. "antennagate" is just a lie imo. this coming from an android fan.

No doubt that the "antennagate" was totally blown out of proportion. iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market, period. My wish for 2011 is that Symbian will disappear together with Windows Mobile.

The may still have the leading market share but it has slipped significantly in the last year.

Obviously not significant enough to make them loose the lead - so why even bother calling it a significant slip then ?

My wish for 2011 is that Symbian will disappear together with Windows Mobile.

Bad news I'm afraid : http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n8_sales_nearing_4_million_units-news-2180.php
Yes, thats right, Nokia N8 sales nearing 4 million units - Symbian^3 is sofa king not dead, punk!

Windows Mobile happens to be owned by this obscure company called "Microsoft". Not sure if you have heard of them before but they are based on Planet Earth and they practically run the place. Guess you missed that memo...

Dropping from 44.6% to 33.6% market share is a pretty big drop Rouxenator. On this page based on Gartner: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone.

Oh and Android went from 3.5% to 25.5% in the space of a year... Apple, Winmo(with good reason) and RIM all lost market share.

Remember that market share is not overall sales, and I am willing to bet overall sales of the N8 will be awesome but it is still a drop in the ocean compared to how many Android/iOS devices are being sold.

I am willing to bet that we will begin to see this trend unfold here as well when (1)data becomes cheaper and (2)Android gains traction.

My personal feeling is that WM7 is going to bomb in a big way. If you want a tightly controlled DRM'ed environment then iOS is the way to go and if you want total program freedom then Android is your baby. What is the market for WM7?

Thought this might interest you folks, here is a report on new device sales over the past 6 months in the US:

+1 Shayd.
I was BB, then WinMo and now Android. Got 3 BB's in the house and I almost pity my daughters and wife who use them.
Just upgraded my HD2 to Gingerbread and Android just got better. I feel the war is now between iOS and Android. The rest are going to be fighting to play catch-up and iOS had better do something big - and fast - as Android is biting into the market very quickly.
WinMo is dead for me. I could not even care to try WinMo 7. Too crap for too long. Lost interest.

My daughters got Android based tablets for Christmas and they are hooked on them. So matter of time before they want an Android based phone. Last night my wife asked when her Android tablet is coming (she never got one in 2010 as she kept putting Android down and BB up and wanted nothing to do with Android) - I replied in the post from Honk Kong and should be here within 1.5 weeks :) She smiled :) I smiled :)
