Did a quick search and didn't find a thread on swimming

Lets discuss our training (pool and open water)

Since last week I am back in the pool after a long break (sea ban didn't help)
I swim in the pool with a masters group, and our sea swims were just a few informal whatsapp groups
In the pool we normally do about 2.5 - 3km, our sea swims are 1.5 - 2.5km
Will try post today's set if I remember

I would be interested in finding out about open water groups in the Pretoria / Centurion area. I am looking into expanding my wings from the 2.5 - 3km pool work I do.

Funny I was just thinking of swimming + municipal pool = Midmar yesterday during the heat.

Thinking I've done it 5 times years ago, I'm still subscribed to http://www.totalimmersion.net/ I really should stop being a lardarse & get to train to go swim again.

I see its been moved to March, enough time to get fit enough to cover the distance. Anyone else going to swim this year?

All muncipal pools are supposed to be closed at this moment in time. It is currently the case with Hilcrest at this moment time. Midmar has unfortunately been delayed one month as far as I know. I am seriously considering it at the moment but now to find a qualification event.

That's currently banned though, isn't it?

Maybe check with NTS I think Champion Swimming Club is in the Centurion area. If I remember correctly, Gerald Goles is looking after OWS there. Obviously Hillcrest is closed atm (municipal pool) , but not all clubs are swimming at municipal pools.

What a time for this thread to pop up.

Getting back into my exercise routine. And with the new house and swimming pool been thinking about incorporating swimming as well.
Biggish kidney shaped residential pool so won't be swimming laps unless they are very very short laps :p

So was thinking about getting/making a harness of some sort and creating an endless pool type of scenario. Tie a rope up against the tree or roof truss and swim against the resistance in place. If that makes sense.
Would have to tie the rope higher so that it does not get in the way of arms and legs.

Anybody used or make such a contraption before? Standard thing to buy somewhere?

A swim tether.

Don't tie the rope around your neck. Around your waist is fine.

I see there are quite a few swim belts on the market. Most of them with bungee cord.

But most of them attach on the side of the pool and rope runs through your legs... I'm maybe stupid but thinking that with it running so close to the surface and between your legs the chances of kicking into it is quite high.

Which is why I was thinking of tethering it at more of a 45degree angle to a roof truss or tree. So that the rope is out of your feet's way.

Maybe I should just test it out with a simple ski rope first.

See the pic in the post above...

That one is definitely tethered higher so will work yes.

Some of them attach just to your safety net hooks. And that will be very much parallel with the water surface and my legs kicking.

I'm probably overthinking it.

Will try it out with a DIY plan over the weekend.

Glad to see so much interest :)

I think our municipal pool (Newton Park) is only open to Registered Swimmers (swimming south africa) but not 100% sure. It has access control so I think it should be open.

I am swimming at a club (Had to register) but its way cheaper than using the gym

When the beaches are open again I will focus more on the sea swimming (less chlorine and more dolphins)

Today's set was

300m warmup easy
300m with flippers
8x50m sprints flippers
800m pulling
8x100m sprints
2600m Total

So what fitness watches do you guys use as training aids? My history is the Garmin Swim, Garmin Forerunner 735 XT and currently the Garmin Swim 2.

I miss swimming. Started open water swimming when I was in varsity. Did 9 midmar miles but ran out of time to train eventually. Perhaps one day when life calms down again I will get back into it and do my 10th.

I tried a tether system for training once and found that it feels very different to actually moving through the water. Good for strength training perhaps but overall i preferred actually swimming in a pool. The gym I was most recently with fulled in their pool though.
