The swimming thread

So what fitness watches do you guys use as training aids? My history is the Garmin Swim, Garmin Forerunner 735 XT and currently the Garmin Swim 2.
Forerunner 945 because I do triathlons.
Any Strava members in here?
Yup.

I am a super kak swimmer though, my shoulder strength is nowhere (and separating my shoulder last year when I crashed my mountain bike has not helped). Just getting back into the swimming. Mostly just laps in the gym pool for now.

So after checking out one or two swim belts in shops I decided to just DIY it. Not going to pay R400+ for something that simple.

Simply got some bungee cord from Builders. Put an eye bolt up high on the lapa. Carabiner clips on both ends of the bungee cord. One on eye bolt and other you just loop around your waist and clip in.

Made two for less than R200. One for myself and one for the daughter who wants to make the swim team this year.

She put in a proper swim this morning and it works like a bomb.

I'm yet to try it out myself because I'm battling a bit of a cold. But sure it will be perfect.

Only complaint from her was that the loop around with the bungee cord causes some skin irritation/chafing after a while.

I'll test it out in this week but easy fix should be using one of my nylon belts and just clipping the carabiner onto that.

For those who are interested. You can participate in the Midmar race remotely.

While the event has done everything possible to ensure all participants can swim in the event this year, for some it is simply not possible. This could be down to not being able to travel, dates that conflict, or perhaps there are just no funds to get down to KZN. The organisers want to make sure that every swimmer can in ‘some way’ take part in the event and so in association with sponsor, 30 South, we are proud to launch the VIRTUAL aQuellé Midmar Mile!

Happening on the 13th and 14th March 2021, you can take part anywhere in the world, and in doing so, register an official 2021 time. You can swim in a pool, the ocean, or a dam/river, as long as you are in line with all current COVID-19 restrictions, and complete a full mile (1,6km).

Back into the pool this month, slowly getting there. Doing roughly 4.5km a week and gradually building it.

So it seems the only version of the Midmar Mile this year will be the virtual event as the official one had to be cancelled due to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife turning down the event plan.

It is with huge disappointment that the organisers of the 2021 edition of the aQuellé Midmar Mile have been forced to make a last minute decision to transfer all 2021 entries to the Virtual aQuellé Midmar Mile event.

This follows what itself was a late-in-the-day announcement by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife that they were turning down the Event Management Plan for the 2021 aQuellé Midmar Mile despite many weeks of attempts to convince senior management that there was no danger of the event becoming a super-spreader of Covid-19.

Entered the virtual Midmar Mile this year. Also just did a test run down at the gym and managed 28min for the 1,6km taking it really easy.

I need to get back in the water. I was training for my first half ironman when I broke my hand (bike accident). I was just getting into the swing of things again when my coach passed away.

Any suggestions on where I can find a training plan? I started working off of one I found on Speedo's website. The aim was to swim 1KM in the time I run 5, which is about 26 minutes.

I swim with a Garmin 935. I got a Garmin HRM pro, but I have not tested that out yet.

The myswim pro app works on Garmin and has both swimming and triathlon based schedules. There are free plans and then additional ones on the paid tier.

Thanks will check it out

So I am looking at 28:30 for my for the Virtual Midmar doing using a GPS in Hilcrest. The GPS track seems extremely wonky but it does my match my 27:05 for the same distance done indoors.

Did my first ocean race in a while on Sunday, 3km swim in 56min in quite choppy conditions

Had a dolphin swim under me on the first lap, that got the heart rate up!

No thanks terrified of swimming in water where I cant see all round me

Subscribed. Saw 2-3 swimmers in emmarentia dam - didn't know it was allowed to swim there. They seemed elite (from the speed & their comfort with water) although they had some fancy gear that looked like scuba diving gear. And they had some small orange float with them - I suppose for visibility.

Biggish kidney shaped residential pool so won't be swimming laps unless they are very very short laps :p
In your opinion, what would be the minimum length of the pool required for it to give a lap feeling? 7 meter?

I would like to practise swimming, but on land first. Please advise. Can I lie flat on a skateboard in my speedo and practice the movements like that?
Do video, NFT and be rich. Also, Speedo ?- not seen menly men for a while - I must be in wrong crowd - dankie tog.
