The Syrian Conflict Thread

What does it matter? Both Syria and Russians are bombing the shirt out of civilians and rebels alike.

Even giving Jola the benefit of the doubt that he has such spectacular vision to be able to ID an SU-24 at 6000m (and someone else in Syria has the same super vision) how does identifying an Su-24 make it definitely Russian? When the same planes in the same colour scheme are also flying with the Syrian Air Force.

As I said, Jola has a hard on for everything happening to be Russian, unfortunately there isn't any way to prove this, and trying to act like there is just weakens his point.

Maybe the Russians did bomb, maybe the Syrians bombed, no one really knows for sure.

As I have just said (#2322), it does not really matter. The Russians have identified with the Syrians, they are working together.

And I don't even think that the Syrians have many operational planes left. The Russian Air Force has effectively taken over, they must take responsibility.

Just a bunch of cowboys. Completely unprofessional.

Again it makes no difference who did the bombing, they are both on the same side thus are both complicit in what happens.

So since Turkey and the US are on the same side in NATO, the US - by your definition - therefore is complicit in the downing of the Russian jet?

Hmm, if people are after Tony Blair and Assad for war crimes, surely Putin must be improving his position dramatically.

All angling for the The Hague ICC racetrack.

As it happens I think Putin was responsible for the downing of the Russian jet.

They played Turkey like a harp, they knew exactly what the Turks would do if they bombed the Turkmens against Turkey's advice.

It was a game for Putin, and he won.

But as for your original question, no, the Turkish plane was not acting in a NATO role. They thought (or wanted to give the impression), that they were defending the motherland. Not aware that they were only role-playing in Putin's game.

I don't support Turkey, and I think that Erdogan is an idiot, but I somehow feel sorry for them here. Putin won the game and he is turning the knife.

Legally it makes a difference, just like you can't be found guilty just because someone else who drives the same car happened to kill someone in a hit and run while driving on the same road as you.

As I recall, the Syrians received a shipment of Su-24's about a month before the Russians arrived, none have been downed so they must still be in use.

Maybe the Russians deliberately gave Syria the shipment of Su-24's exactly for this reason, no way to prove which nation did what.

are there no international laws in place that govern markings (nationality identification) of aircraft involved in actual combat ?

I don't know, I can't think of anything that would prevent it (the planes still have ID numbers showing iirc).

Again it makes no difference who did the bombing, they are both on the same side thus are both complicit in what happens.

As above, legally it makes a big difference. They can't be found guilty just on the "they are on the same side" theory, it would never get to court.

Yip, the drones are very controversial.

Unfortunately, with these new Air Defense systems, piloted planes are going to become obsolete, and everything will be drones.

Expect a lot more of this, from all countries.

Aren't cluster bombs banned under the Geneva convention ?

Oh, and before Xarog says it, I know that the USA also has them, but they don't use them on civilians. Or at all for that matter.

See, I have just reduced the number of responses :D
Actually wrong:
http://www.umsebenzi.co.za/en/articles/2015/08/18/dron-a18.html
A report released earlier this year documented the carnage that has been wrought upon the population of Yemen by Obama’s drone war against Al Qaeda in Arabian Peninsula. The first airstrike carried out by the Obama administration in Yemen utilized a cruise missile loaded with cluster bombs, killing at least 44 civilians including five pregnant women and 21 children. Since then at least 122 drone strikes have been launched.

Maybe in the War Crimes Court, but not in the court of public opinion.

Assad/Putin are now as one.

Putin is going to regret this marriage of convenience.

The Russian public are the only one's Putin cares about and they think he is superman and the majority support what he is doing, and unfortunately the court of public opinion can't send anyone to jail...

Are some of those generic or does each cartoon man represent a specific group?

Bottom Left dude kinda looks like Al-Qaeda to me.
