Denmark prepeared to respond to Syria without UN Approval

Denmark on Tuesday said it was prepared to support "alternative responses" if the UN Security Council fails to take action on Syria over its use of chemical weapons.

"We hear from our closest allies that there is no doubt that chemical weapons have been deployed in Syria, and that Assad used chemical weapons against his own people," Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt told TV2 News.

"This puts maximum pressure on the UN Security Council and I have to say that if the UN Security Council does not respond, we will be forced to consider alternative responses."

Denmark would, however, "listen carefully" to the UN Security Council's assessment, she said.

Syria says UN Inspection delayed until Wednesday

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the UN mission investigating alleged chemical weapons attacks in Damascus has been delayed until Wednesday after rebels failed to guarantee the experts' safety.

"Today, we were surprised by the fact that they were not able to get there because the rebels did not agree to guarantee the mission's security. So the mission has been delayed until tomorrow," Muallem told a televised news conference.

Britain recalls parliament to discuss Syria

Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday recalled Parliament for an urgent discussion and vote on a possible military response to the alleged chemical attack in Syria.

Cameron said the crisis session will be held Thursday, when Parliament would traditionally be on its summer recess. A clear motion will be considered by lawmakers, who have been urging Cameron to consult Parliament before any possible action against Syria.

Cameron's office said that the UK is considering a "proportionate" response that would deter Syrian President Bashar Assad from using chemical weapons in the future.

The decision on the recall came as the military drew up contingency plans for a possible military attack on Syria.

Britain's Ministry of Defense also said that a planned Royal Air Force training mission involving British Typhoon fighter jets has been postponed. The jets were to have been deployed on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

That's as convincing as "I saw it on YouTube".

CAIRO August 27, 2013 (AP)
By ALBERT AJI Associated Press
Associated Press
The Arab League has blamed the Syrian government for last week's alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus that killed hundreds, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

In an emergency meeting held Tuesday, the Arab League also called on members of the U.N. Security Council to overcome their differences and agree on "deterrent" measures against those who committed "this heinous crime."

UN Arms Experts Resume Chemical Weapons Probe in Syria

UN inspectors set off Wednesday to a site in Damascus of alleged chemical weapons attacks, a day after suspending their mission due to safety concerns, an AFP photographer said.

The team of arms experts boarded a convoy of six vehicles, the photographer said. It was unclear which site they were intending to visit.

Russia Evacuates more than 100 citizens from Syria

Russia evacuated 116 Russian citizens and nationals of other ex-Soviet states on two planes belonging to the emergencies ministry which flew them from the Syrian port city of Latakia, the ministry said Wednesday.

The first plane, an Ilyushin-76 cargo plane, brought back 89 people wanting to leave the conflict-torn country and landed at Moscow's Domodedovo airport late on Tuesday.

"On board were 89 people wanting to leave Syria, including 75 Russians," emergencies ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius said in a statement on the ministry website. "They are mostly women and children."

The second plane, an Ilyushin-62, landed in Latakia in the early hours of Wednesday and returned to Moscow later that morning, the emergencies ministry said.

On board were 27 Russians wanting to leave Syria, it said in a statement to Russian news agencies. The first plane also took a cargo of 20 tonnes of humanitarian aid, largely conserves and sugar, into Syria.

The flights came as expectations grow of Western military action against President Bashar al-Assad's regime over claims it used chemical weapons in an attack outside the Syrian capital last week.

Russia has questioned the claims and warned such military action would have catastrophic consequences.

Latakia is a Mediterranean port city whose region is dominated by the Alawite community, the Muslim sect to which Assad, his family and much of the regime's elite belong.

Russia has insisted it has not been implementing a full-scale evacuation of the many thousands of Russian passport-holders still believed to be in Syria.

The emergencies ministry has evacuated around 750 Russians and other ex-Soviet nationals on its flights since the start of the conflict.

Brave move of those citizens.
There chances were probably equal being killed during the conflict in the ground, or being killed in the wreckage of a russian built anything, falling out of the sky :D

chemical weapons

so help me here.

Plenty of drama & excitement over the use of chemical weapons. Why is that exactly ?
I am failing to see the difference in 50 people killed in an attack using chemical weapons to 50 killed by a car bomb, or 50 people suffering injuries as a result of a "chemical attack" or 50 people suffering injuries from a car bomb.

Now that u mention it... interesting question. Maybe chemical weapons have the potential of extremely large dispersal area if deployed for such a purpose...therefore the potential of a far greater causalty list?

One creates permanent damage the other not.

They quite possibly do have a larger dispersal area, but the question remains be it any equal amount of people killed by a bomb or chemical weapon

Well..i.dont think it matters to the west how 50 people died...but what they are concerned by perhpas is tje possible large scale eradication of life should a large chemical weapon with wide.dispersal be used. Same reason maybe why a nuke is so feared. It is a bomb also.... but the sheer volume of.loss of.life is mimd boggling. Maybe something similar with chems? This.is just my guess
