Syrian state media: Air defenses down Israeli missiles near Damascus airport



Syrian military air defenses downed several missiles that Israel fired in an act of “aggression” near Damascus airport on Saturday, Syrian state media said.

During the more than seven-year conflict in neighboring Syria, Israel has grown deeply alarmed by the expanding clout of its arch enemy Iran - a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel’s air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in the war.

Israel Strikes Iranian Arms Shipment at Damascus Airport

Israeli missiles are suspected to have struck an Iranian arms shipment at Damascus airport late Saturday, the latest in a string of attacks aimed at eroding Tehran’s military foothold in Syria.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that the country’s air defenses repelled some of the incoming missiles, which said they were fired from Israel.


The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based monitoring group, said explosions heard in the Syrian capital were likely caused by Israeli strikes targeting a warehouse and a recently arrived arms shipment from Iran to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.
According to a news report by the Israeli Hadashot TV Sunday morning, the strike also hit an Iranian cargo plane loaded with weapons, which had recently landed at the Damascus International Airport from Tehran.
People in Damascus posted social media footage showing explosions that they described as the airport being hit. The were no immediate reports of casualties.

A Russian maritime patrol aircraft with multiple personnel on board was inadvertently shot down by Syrian regime anti-aircraft artillery on Monday after the Syrians came under attack by Israeli missiles, according to a US official with knowledge of the incident
The US official said the regime was actually trying to stop a barrage of Israeli missiles. A second official confirmed that Israel was responsible for the missile strikes on the Syrian regime.

Turkey and Russia agree on 'de-militarized zone' in Syria's last rebel-held enclave

That's clear as day. Pulls the NATO card when they shoot a Russian jet down, pulls the Russia card when the US supports the Kurds, pulls the unleash-waves-of-migrants card when the EU upsets them.

Wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.
 
Russian maritime patrol aircraft, an IL-20 has been shot down near Latakia.

It was shot down, while 4 Israeli F-16's were bombing Syria. The Syrians were firing SAM's at the missiles fired by the Israelis.

Russian news claims that the Israelis put the Russian aircraft in the path of the Syrian SAM missiles.

Israelis must have worked out how to mind control Russian pilots. I am impressed.

Well, we don't know how true that is, but that's certainly not on the "mind control" level. Merely positioning yourself so that someone else sits between you and a SAM site.

so they claim, the jets put the plane between themselves and the air defense systems. seems like a pretty basic concept.
