Tens of thousands flee Syria's Idlib as deadly bombings intensify

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled Syria's Idlib province to the Turkish border, after an increase in bombings by Russia-backed government forces, creating a new humanitarian challenge as the winter season arrives.

United Nations observers said on Friday that at least 18,000 people have been displaced in Idlib in just 24 hours, as the deadly bombardments continue.

On Friday morning, at least seven more people were reported killed, after at least 19 civilians were killed on Thursday.

In the last five days, at least 80,000 Syrians have already fled near Turkey's border, according to reports quoting Syria's Response Coordination Group.

There are already about one million Syrian refugees living near the border with Turkey.

In September 2018, Turkey and Russia had agreed to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone.

Turkey Says Will Not Withdraw From Army Posts in Syria's Idlib

Turkey will not withdraw from its observation posts in Syrian rebel bastion province of Idlib which has seen an increase in violence carried out by regime forces supported by Russian airstrikes, the defense minister said.

The posts were established under a September 2018 deal between Syrian regime ally Moscow and Ankara, which backs the rebels, to avert an all-out Syrian government onslaught in Idlib.

Government forces surrounded one of 12 Turkish observation post in Idlib province on Monday after overrunning nearby areas in a push to take the last opposition holdout, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"We respect the agreement reached with Russia and we expect Russia to abide by this agreement," Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in comments published on Sunday on the defense ministry's Twitter account.

"We will by no means empty those 12 observation posts, we will not leave there," Akar said.

His comments came during a visit together with top army commanders to the southern province of Hatay on the Syrian border to inspect Turkish troops on Saturday.

Turkey, worried over a new wave of refugees from the Idlib region, is pressing for a fresh ceasefire deal, as it sent a delegation to Moscow on Monday.

I'm not interested in debating who is the good terrorist and who is the bad terrorist. Reality is there is a humanitarian crisis in Idlib following the Syrian-Russian offensive.

Then you need to start further back in this particular story, because Idlib was in crises long before Russia even arrived in Syria.

The current, ongoing, offensive will save Idlib. Or do you reckon it's better to just leave it be and let the terrorists create their caliphate?

One thing is for sure, all major settlements have been left in ruins so not much chance of anything being created.

same thing as USA is doing reinforcing terrorists: trying to improve their position in the region

for USA its oil and underhanded deals with Israel and Saudi Arabia
for Turkey its the Kurds

both are there illegally, committing acts of war against a sovereign nation with impunity, the west does not give a toss and the UN looks the other way
