Tesla previews small electric car for China

American firm posted design sketch as it announced that it's setting up a research and design centre in China

Tesla has shown a design sketch of a small car for China and revealed that it's looking to set up a design and research facility in the country.

The American electric vehicle (EV) maker posted the image of a compact hatchback with Model 3-inspired styling via its official account on WeChat – China's biggest social media network.

The announcement was primarily a call for job applicants, some of whom will have a hand in designing "Chinese-style" Tesla models.

Tesla recently set up shop in China with a gigafactory in Shanghai – its first outside the US. With an annual capacity of 500,000 units, it will initially produce the Model 3 compact saloon and its forthcoming sibling, the Model Y, a seven-seat mid-size SUV.

I've never been a fan of wrapping. It always comes across as a bit basic, like fitting Midas spoilers and mufflers to your car.

This however makes it look similar to the matte black porche GT3...from certain angles.

It's cool, but he should've gone with the lighter mags. (I wouldn't say no to this though)

This Tesla Model 3 wants to take down McLaren F1s

Unplugged's tuned Model 3 gets within 0.1sec of the F1 around Tsukuba circuit

Teslas can do straight-line speed. They practically specialise in it, with three-second sprints to 60mph no issue for cars with rather a lot more heft than the ones they’re embarrassing within the depths of YouTube.

But what about round corners? Well, a Model 3 ‘Ascension R’ tweaked by Unplugged Performance – effectively the AMG to Tesla, albeit unofficially – has just lapped Tsukuba circuit in 1m04.7s. For context, that slots it neatly between the McLaren F1 (1m04.6s) and Porsche 997 GT3 (1m.04.8s).

Now, there’s no doubt we’d be quicker in a Model 3 than a priceless F1. All the clever stuff going on beneath a modern car – especially one as advanced as a Tesla – makes it a significantly less deathy or bankrupty thing to throw around a twisty circuit against a pressuring stopwatch. Especially with the coilover suspension, carbon ceramic brakes and harnessed race seat deployed in the Ascension R.

Saw a matte black wrapped Model 3 today. It looked ok, but I would've left the door handles. I still don't know how I feel about a dirty matte black vs dirty gloss black car. I think if done right, matte black is dope. AS MKBHD says "MATTE BLACK EVERY THING". :sneaky:

There's a real nice looking gun metal grey Model 3 parked down the road from me. Seems Milo likes it too and is already calling dibs by marking the area.

I love the pearl white, but I'd happily choose this colour too. Still aching to put in a pre-order for the model Y's coming out soon. R20k (refundable) deposit to pre-order....

Having driven the model3 all-wheel and only been passenger IN a model S P100D, both of them go like stink - but as much as I'd love an S the model3 strikes me as the better car due to its affordability for most people.

Having said that, I'm itching for a model-Y ... and for anyone considering whether or not to buy tesla stocks despite it already being at an ATH, I think it's going to explode soon, given the market cap of the crossovers making up roughly 40% of all new car sales world wide.

Tesla's success in Europe catches BMW and Mercedes off guard

Until recently European motor industry executives regarded Tesla with something like bemusement. The electric car upstart from California was burning cash, struggling with production problems, and hedge funds were betting it would fail.

The car executives are not laughing anymore. Almost overnight, the Tesla Model 3 has become one of the bestselling cars in Europe. In December, only the Volkswagen Golf and Renault Clio sold more, according to data compiled by market research firm JATO Dynamics.

The success of the Model 3, only months after it went on sale in Europe, has come as a shock to industry executives who only months ago were ready to write Tesla off. The company was building cars in a tent, for goodness’ sake.

Tesla’s surge, assuming it proves sustainable, raises questions about whether traditional carmakers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are in danger of missing a striking shift in automotive technology. Despite plenty of warning, they are only beginning to introduce competing electric vehicles.

I need to teach the floof to pee on the car in future. Think I need to come visit!

The Harley-Davidson LiveWire Is Quicker Than A Tesla Model 3 Performance

It’s no secret that Harley’s new electric LiveWire is quick in a straight line. I mean, sure it weighs 550 pounds, but it’s got 105 horseponies and 86 lb-ft of torque, which isn’t insignificant. And being electric, it’s all available instantly. We know that electric vehicles have developed a reputation for being quick, with Tesla’s Model S routinely waxing the floor with Hellcats at the drag strip. The electric Harley isn’t a match for the S, but check out what it does compared to the more reasonable Model 3.

Check out this Tesla Model 3 with active aero

RevoZport’s Model 3R Evo looks wild

Welcome Internet, to the R-Zentric Model 3R Evolution. Sounds like a Grand Theft Auto creation, doesn’t it?

Looks like it’s been through Los Santos Customs one too many times too. But no, the R Evo is actually a track-focused Tesla Model 3 courtesy of Hong Kong-based tuners RevoZport.

Apparently, R-Zentric is the company’s EV division – working on everything from e-Golfs to LaFerraris – and now it has fitted active aero to Elon’s smallest saloon. Yep, both the front splitter and rear diffuser of that body kit have moveable panels that can switch between high downforce and low drag modes, depending on speed and g-force.

The claim is increased downforce on a track, without sacrificing range in the real world – although whether it works in reality we’re yet to find out. RevoZport isn’t attaching any numbers to the R Evo just yet.
