The Tesla Model 3 Thread

Tesla Model Y and Model 3 prices slashed by £7k

Prices for Tesla’s two biggest sellers fall by as much as £7,000 as discounting reaches UK

The Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 have had their prices significantly reduced in the UK, with entry-level, rear-wheel drive versions of both cars now £7,000 and £5,500 cheaper respectively.

The Model Y was previously priced at £51,990 but Tesla has lowered this to £44,990, undercutting several rivals, including the VW ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6.

Meanwhile the Long Range and Performance variants have fallen by £5k and £8k apiece to £52,990 and £59,990.

It’s a similar story for the Model 3: that cost from £48,490 just a matter of hours ago, but prices now start from £42,990. The rest of the line-up has also been readjusted, with Long Range and Performance models now pitched at £50,990 and £57,990.

The move is something of a surprise and - in typical Tesla fashion - was announced without warning, so there’s no telling how long this pricing structure will last. Tesla won’t even give Model S and Model X buyers a fixed price at the moment, saying only that ‘pricing and options will be finalised as delivery approaches’.

However it does follow a wave of discounting in the US - something CEO Elon Musk previously said should “never” be done on a new car - where credit of up to $7,500 was offered on orders.

Facelifted Tesla Model 3 spotted in the wild once again

Back in December last year, photos of what appears to be a Model 3 facelift surfaced online suggesting that the automaker will finally update its entry-level EV. Now that vehicle was spotted roaming the streets once more, resulting in even more photos hitting the internet.

Some believe that the update of the Model 3 will be something like the Model S refresh - virtually no visual changes, just under-the-hood improvements. However, why would Tesla go to such lengths to cover up the front and rear bumpers if that was the case? The December pictures also suggested some small design changes.

Tesla explains its heat pump technology in new promo video

Not all EVs have heat pumps, but really, they should - aside from, perhaps, those sold in places where it doesn't ever get cold. As our glossary definition explains in detail, EVs don't have the ability to use the same heating system as ICE cars do. Those reuse engine exhaust heat, but obviously there's no such thing on an EV. So the choice is either a conventional system or a heat pump, the latter being much more power efficient.

Tesla perhaps thought these facts weren't known enough by most people, and so the company decided to upload a new promo video to its official YouTube channel today. And yes, it's all about heat pumps - specifically Tesla's heat pumps, and why they're very good to have. Take a look for yourself:

Tesla Touchscreens Could Get Physical Buttons Thanks to the Aftermarket

A third-party device could bring buttons and dials to the dashboard of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y might soon have the option of physical buttonsand knobs to give owners tactile control over certain functions buried in the touchscreen. Rather than furiously tap and slide on climate settings or other features that have no business behind a screen, Tesla owners can look forward to an aftermarket accessory called the Ctrl-Bar that adds actual buttons to their screens. That is, if the crowdfunded input device can make it to production.

The Ctrl-Bar promises to easily add a strip of physical buttons to the bottom of the infotainment display of the Tesla Model 3 and Y, putting a host of features at your fingertips. OK, so a touchscreen does the same thing, but it’s just not as satisfying. Greenmission made the Ctrl-Bar to get around that in the Model 3 and Y, all while making sure installing the device is easy and straightforward.

Tesla finally shows its actual prices on its US website

In a welcome turn of events Tesla has updated its US website, so it's no longer as misleading when it comes to the price of the cars. Previously, the prices listed up front factored in the federal tax credit and potential gas savings over six years instead of showing the actual vehicle prices. Now, you get the real price as primary.

Let's take Model 3, for example. The car starts at a little over $43,000, but it was previously listed for a little under $32,000. Of course, the former is what you'll actually end up paying, so you can see how this wasn't the nicest way for Tesla to go about this.

You'd like to see a breakdown of your potential savings when buying the Model 3, you can still do so at the bottom of the page. Click on "Learn more" and you will see a pop-up with the breakdown of the savings.

After all not everyone can get the tax credit and it often requires waiting time. In the end, you still need to finance the full amount.

The Tesla Model 3 Beat the Toyota Camry and Is the New California Car King

Tesla is getting closer than ever to dethroning Toyota as California's sales leader.

Tesla – with the help of its Model 3 – is getting ever so close to snagging the top sales spot from Toyota in the U.S.’s biggest car market: California. A new report from Automotive News says Model 3 registrations in the state surpassed the Camry in 2022. That’s according to the California New Car Dealers Association. The prior year, the Camry was the best-selling car.

Along with the Model 3, the Model Y is also helping Tesla’s goals of California domination. The electric crossover was reportedly the top light truck registered in California last year. It was the second year in a row the Model 3 beat out Toyota’s RAV4.

Just for reference, Auto News says Toyota’s new car market share in the Golden State last year was 17 percent with 289,304 registrations. Tesla, on the other hand, had 11 percent market share with 186,711 registrations. Despite that sizable gulf, Tesla is moving steadily toward the crown. The outlet reports that the Texas-based automaker’s California market share rose 54 percent from 2021 to 2022. During that same time, Toyota (and Lexus) lost 14 percent of its market share.

“Tesla buyers today are historically Honda and Toyota buyers of the past,” Loren McDonald, EVAdoption CEO, told Automotive News. “They’re switching over to Model 3s and Model Ys.”

Updated Tesla Model 3 spotted with new wheels

The project Highland is coming to an end, updated Tesla Model 3 test vehicles have been popping up all over the place recently suggesting imminent debut. We have seen the white Model 3 up close and personal with its new cameras and new suite of sensors and now we got a glimpse of a black test vehicle with new wheels.

The photos of this camouflaged Model 3 were posted by Twitter user The Kilowatts and yet again the front and the back of the car are completely covered. They are hiding the new hardware and slightly revised bodywork. What else is new? The wheels!

At first glance the wheels look scuffed and all scratched up but they actually are brand new wheels. They only have been painted in matte black paint to try and make their design less distinguishable when the car is moving. Unfortunately that trick doesn’t work on high-speed digital cameras.

Tesla Model 3 Highland production to start in September, to be followed by Model Y Juniper next year

According to the latest report from Reuters, Tesla is in advanced preparations to begin production of the updated version of Model 3 at its Shanghai Gigafactory. The retooling is already taking place and the Model 3 codenamed Project Highland will go into production in September.

The photos we have already seen of the camouflaged Model 3 feature the electric sedan with the updated hardware and revised exterior. There will be new bumpers, new and improved cameras and most likely an updated suite of sensors. The interior is getting a revamp as well and it is possible that Elon Musk will share some more details today during the Investor Day.

Tesla wants to cut production costs with both the updated Model 3 and Model Y and according to internal sources, the company wants to boost the appeal of its electric cars. That means Tesla is fully aware of the growing competition and it hopefully will translate into good looking updates for both cars.

Tesla price cuts in China work - it sold 74,402 EVs in February

February is a significant month when it comes to car sales in China, January is usually much slower due to the Chinese New Year celebrations. While in January car sales shut down together with most of the businesses for at least a week, sometimes even longer, come February the buyers are out in force.

Tesla chose to cut its prices in January and started an avalanche with most of the EV manufacturers eventually following its lead. Tesla’s January sales numbers were already good despite the holiday period and stood at 66,051 vehicles which was over 6,000 more than in January the previous year.

February has become a bumper month and hopefully a sign of things to follow. Tesla recorded 74,402 sales which is nearly 18,000 vehicles more than it sold in February of the last year. That represents a 31.2% jump year-on-year and 12.6% increase from the previous month.

Tesla is still lagging behind BYD which sold a staggering 191,664 vehicles in February. That number needs taking apart though because BYD doesn’t sell just EVs, it sells plug-in hybrids and extended range EVs. Out of the nearly 200,000 electric vehicles sold, the battery EVs represented 76,000 which places Tesla in a very close second place.

It gets even more interesting, when we look deeper into the numbers. Because there is no denying that BYD may be the king of sales, but the bulk of their customers buy cars well below the $30,000 price range. When we compare like-for-like segments of electric cars, BYD sold only 16,000 vehicles in the pure electric and over $30,000 category.

It is a significant result for Tesla, it means it is the favourite among the Chinese customers when it comes to pure electric vehicles and ones that cost over $30,000. The price bracket between $30,000 and $40,000 in China is the most contested market because it offers the best profit margins.

Tesla Model 3 owner unlocks wrong car and drives off

Another day, another Tesla story - this time all the way from Canada. It all started with a little confusion about which car belongs to who but ended up in an accidental theft of a vehicle and Tesla’s advanced security system did absolutely nothing to stop it.

According to a report from Global News, a Vancouver business owner somehow managed to unlock someone else’s Tesla Model 3 with his phone and drove it away. The mix up started with two identical Teslas parked side by side.

It should have never happened. The only possibility for this to work is if the keyfob was already in the car and the car itself was unlocked. Both owners claim that wasn’t the case and the first owner just unlocked the Model 3, jumped in and went to pick his kids up from school. He only noticed something was up when noticed a crack in the windshield and tried blaming his wife for it on the phone.

She wouldn’t have any of it and then he started getting text messages from the actual owner of the car. That owner apparently got the phone number of the guy who was in the wrong car, from a piece of paper left in the other Tesla. Did the other Model 3 unlock as well for the wrong owner? Or was it left unlocked by the first guy, who jumped into the wrong car? This is a Monty Python migratory swallow situation all over.

Tesla insider shares details of Model 3 Project Highland

Tesla Model 3 Project Highland is no longer a secret, the cat has been out of the bag for a while now. We have seen the updated Model 3 covered in camouflage several times, we have seen reports of Project Highland's intended production start date, and now we have more information about what’s under those covers.

Although some changes coming to Model 3 are purely cosmetic - like its rear bumper - the majority of them are either cost driven or are forced by new Hardware 4 components. Hardware 4 is Tesla’s latest autonomous driving package, coming with all ancillary cameras and sensors.

The updated Tesla Model 3 is getting new headlights, so the front bumper also needed a redesign. The company took advantage of that to provide better aerodynamic performance. There will be a new camera fitted in the front bumper, which is a new approach for Tesla, first seen in the production-ready Cybertruck.

On the sides the fender camera housing will sport two cameras from now on. While before the fender camera was facing backward and monitoring the blind spot and everything else that was happening behind the car, the new additional unit will look towards the front of the car. That way the front blind spot is completely covered and it should stop the Tesla Model 3 from creeping up into the cross traffic at junctions when in auto-mode.
