The Tesla Model 3 Thread

Photo of refreshed Tesla Model 3 leaks, reveals front design

The Tesla Model 3 refresh has coming for quite some time now, but only rare camouflaged prototypeswere spotted on the streets without revealing too many details. The new leak, however, shows the front of the car in full.

The wraps used before didn't suggest there was a major overhaul of the headlights, so we are pleasantly surprised. It looks like Tesla is planning to do a proper Model 3 facelift. The headlights look more aggressive, with the LED strip running along the bottom edge of the headlights.

Tesla lowers Model 3 and Model Y prices in the US once again

This is the sixth time Tesla is slashing its prices (with the occasional hike inbetween) - this time it's the Model 3 and Model Y. Back in January, the company started the so-called price war with drastically slashing prices of all its vehicles.

According to the US website, the RWD variant of the Model 3 is now selling for $39,990, which is $1,000 down from its original price. The LR and Performance iterations of Model Y both cost $3,000 less.

Tesla unveils RWD Model 3 with long-range battery for UK business fleets

Tesla made a unique Model 3 LR RWD with the long-range battery but a single rear-wheel-drive motor for business fleet customers in the UK.

Currently, the Tesla Model 3 can be had in RWD with the smaller battery, as well as in AWD with the larger battery in Long range and Performance trims. There used to be a long-range RWD Model 3 in the first generation, but that's not seen with this one.

This new model promises a WLTP range of 634km (394miles) - the longest of any Model 3, followed by the 602km (374 miles) LR AWD variant.

Tesla Model 3 and Y prices go up again

Tesla's pricing has been a roller coaster since the beginning of this year, with changes up and down constantly. The overall trend is still downwards, although the latest price change adds a few extra bucks to the Model 3 and Model Y prices in the US and China.

The good news is that the price hike is quite modest. Both models add $250 to their prices in the US and CNY 2,000 in China, which is around $290. Going by previous price changes, the European market will likely follow suit sooner rather than later, but we can hope the price increase is just as small.

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range Is Finally Back

Tesla stopped taking orders for the long-range Model 3 back in August.

If you’re running a company, too much demand is definitely a good problem to have. It’s still a problem, but it’s much better than other problems such as “no one wants our product at all” and “our office is being overrun by spiders.” Back in August of last year, Tesla had that exact problem: Too many people were ordering the Model 3 Long Range, so it stopped taking orders until it could ramp up production. But now the Model 3 Long Range is back.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range is back in the US, but there's a catch

After disappearing from Tesla's configurator for nine months, the Model 3 Long Range makes a return in the US with a few caveats. First, its range is now 325 miles instead of 358 miles and it qualifies for half of the tax credit, just like the Standard Range model. And there's a perfectly sound explanation for this.

Since the range has gone down, it's safe to assume that the LR trim in the US is now using a different battery. And since the car qualifies for half of the federal tax credit (like the Standard Range), the battery could very well be CATL's LFP, which stands for Lithium-iron-phosphate.

The LFP packs are used in the Chinese-made Model 3s and are cheaper to produce and offer superior longevity to the standard batteries. They also reduce the use of cobalt. However, LFP batteries also have less energy density and perform worse in cold weather conditions.

Updated Tesla Model 3 trial production ends soon - the new vehicle is longer

According to Bloomberg, trial production of the updated Tesla Model 3 is nearing its end at Giga Shanghai. Tesla is so protective of the details, it has banned all mobile phones from the production line, and workers involved in the trial assembly don’t really want to speak to anyone outside the company.

So far, all the comments from workers point to a much sleeker Model 3 - new interior, new headlights and taillights, and sportier appearance thanks to new bumpers. All workers agree on one detail we have missed until now - the new Model 3 is apparently longer than the outgoing model. It’s unlikely - but still possible - the wheelbase has been altered, and the extra length will most likely come from new, bigger bumpers.

Giga Shanghai is already preparing for the new Model 3 production. The Phase 1 production line will shut down for a few days for the required adjustments to take place. The plan, which may still change, is for the new vehicle to go into production by the end of this month, which is much earlier than initially expected.

Drive To Believe is Tesla’s first official video ad

Only last week we learned that Tesla is finally venturing into the world of advertising, and now we have what looks like a first, albeit early, result. The official Twitter account of Tesla Asia just published a short video of a Tesla Model 3 owner who talks about the benefits of the car and why she likes it over other cars, especially the ICE-powered ones.

It's interesting why Tesla would choose a Singapore-based customer for the first marketing video, we’re not sure if there’s any hidden message in that at all. One reason why Tesla would do that is because Asian markets are very important for the company. Going for a Singaporean customer and publishing the video on the Tesla Asia Twitter account signals the beginning of a wider marketing campaign.

When Elon Musk spoke about Tesla creating its first marketing campaigns, he mentioned they wouldn’t be the car adverts we are used to. The company is looking more for creative content rather than regular adverts, Musk suggested they should be “informative and entertaining.” Using Twitter for the first advert wasn’t a surprise either although it went against what Musk initially suggested.

Tesla First Commercial Advertises A $165,000 Model 3, Doesn't Mention Autopilot

The two minute ad is set in Singapore, the most expensive place in the world to own a car.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors on an annual shareholders call last week that the brand would dabble in advertising for the first time in its 20-year history. And by dabble, Musk meant release a two minute long ad featuring a customer in Singapore singing the praises of her Tesla Model 3.

Tesla Asia’s official account would like you to meet Felicia, a branch manager in the financial industry living in Singapore. She’s going to tell you all about her Model 3 — specifically, how safe it is, how clean it is, and how good it is for her family:

Tesla Model 3 production in Shanghai stopped - updated Model 3 is coming

We have recently reported on Giga Shanghai’s preparations for production of the updated and much-awaited, Tesla Model 3. We were expecting the SHanghai facility to shut down for at least a few days by the end of May, to prepare the production line for the new vehicle, and according to local reports, this is exactly what’s happening right now.

Chinese blogger Wu Wa posted a video to his YouTube channel, indicating far less activity, both in the Phase 1 Model 3 production area, and the Phase 2 Model Y area. This confirms our earlier report and points to the factory shutdown to apply necessary changes to the production lines.

Project Highland, as Tesla refers to the refreshed Model 3, is on a final stretch and will be officially revealed within weeks, if not days. We already have seen images of the front of the new Model 3, and many - still disguised - test vehicles have been spotted roaming the streets. We even saw interior shots posted by someone using a drone to spy on Tesla’s testing facility.

Tesla is clearing up stock of Model 3, signals nearing facelift launch

We've been hearing about the refreshed Model 3 for some time now and we even have a good idea of what the vehicle will look like. And it appears to be closer than expected given that last month the company lowered its prices on Model 3s in stock and now it's reducing the price tag once more.

With another aggressive cut of €2,246 for Model 3s in new inventory announced today, it's evident that Tesla is trying to get rid of its old 3s and make room for the new ones. Just a few days ago, the Shanghai factory halted Model 3 production, even.

Redesigned Tesla Model 3 spotted in camo, vertical taillights confirmed

The facelifted Tesla Model 3, also known as Project Highland, was once again spotted testing on public roads in camo gear. The image by Ranjit Bhaskar shows the redesigned taillights.

Looking closely, you can see that the LED indicator lights run vertically, instead of horizontally as on the current car. At this point, we can accept vertical LEDs as seemingly confirmed. The Model Y, X and S also have horizontal LED lights, maybe Tesla will shift all of its cars to vertical ones?

Tesla Model 3 refresh to bring RGB interior lighting and steer-by-wire Yoke

Tesla Model 3's refresh shapes up to be more than just a regular facelift. In fact, all evidence shows it's going to be a complete overhaul. The new exterior will be paired with an updated interior and new hardware - Hardware 4.0 onboard computer, to be exact, which is used for Tesla's FSD.

According to Teslascope, the so-called project Highland will introduce a slew of new features, including interior RGB lighting and a steer-by-wire Yoke steering. This is actually a big deal as it's potentially going to fix the Yoke introduced with the Model S Plaid, which was a complete disaster.

The Model S' new steering wheel design is the worst of both worlds in a sense. It uses a regular mechanical system to steer the wheels, while the nature of the Yoke requires adaptable steering control depending on the speed, so an electronic system with precise adjustments on the fly is needed. That's where the steer-by-wire comes into play.
