Tesla's iOS app now supports UWB for more secure digital key handling

An interesting new feature comes with the latest Tesla app for iPhones with version 2024.2.3. The app can now tap into the iPhone's UWB chip and use it for more advanced and secure Phone Key handling.

Previously, the Phone Key function on the Tesla app solely relied on Bluetooth. On supported iPhones and cars UWB allows for much more accurate positioning and protects against replay spoofing. This is an attack in which valid data transmission is fraudulently repeated or delayed if the attacker is able to intercept that transmission. In other words, someone can relay the broadcast from your digital key and unlock your Tesla. Although rare, they are still possible.

The app's changelog also says the UWB positioning is able to detect who's in the driver's seat in case two people with Phone Keys enter the vehicle. It's the same technology used in Apple's AirTags, after all.


 
Tesla Model 3 Performance refresh spotted with bucket seats

Tesla launched the refreshed Model 3, codenamed Highland, late last year (and it only made it to North America last month). But so far we only got the lower-end Standard Range and Long Range trims. The top of the line Performance version is still waiting for its very own Highland refresh, which should be coming later this year.

Tesla is clearly working on the Performance Highland, since an engineering prototype has just been spotted out and about in the wild on the streets of Santa Monica, wearing some pretty heavy camo on the front and rear as you can see in the images below, the first of which was posted on Reddit.

It's pretty easy to tell that this is a Highland based on the shape of the headlights. It's also very easy to tell that this is the Performance version because - look at those white bucket seats! The sporty seats will definitely complement the rumored upgraded drivetrain here to ensure smooth cornering without sliding out of your seat.


 
VW ID.7 Pro and 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range come equally matched in real life range test

It was just a question of time before someone would pit the new 2024 Tesla Model 3 against the Volkswagen ID.7 - two of the most popular electric sedans ou there.

Courtesy of the YouTube channel Battery Life, we have a real-life range test of the ID.7 Pro versus the new Tesla Model 3 LR. On the face of it, the Tesla is far more powerful and smaller but with similar battery capacity, while the ID.7 with its single 286 hp electric motor and extra 340 kg to carry around, feels like an underdog. Tesla Model 3 Plaid: This Is It

The new "Highland" Model 3 Plaid was spotted in Spain this weekend.

The car company with a performance trim named after a throw-away joke from every 13-year-old’s favorite Mel Brooks film is apparently expanding its EV performance lineup downward with a new Model 3 Plaid on the docket. The Model S Plaid proved no match for Porsche’s Taycan or Lucid’s Air Sapphire on track. As a result, maybe Tesla has taken a page out of the muscle car handbook, putting the big motor from the big car into the small car to go fast.

For a company that claims to not have a PR department, Tesla’s PR department works awfully hard. This short (and clearly cleverly orchestrated by Tesla) video posted to social media over the weekend depicting the new Tesla Model 3 Plaid trundling through a small square in Valencia, Spain, is the proof. The car isn’t even wearing real license plates, just a three-dimensional badge that says Model 3 like it might for a manufacturer photo shoot. Spanish police aren’t going to let something without a plate drive around willy nilly.

Tesla hasn’t officially recognized that this car exists, though it has dropped some pretty big hints. Obviously as the Model 3 lineup currently lacks a performance variant, we knew one was coming soon, but to see it in production-ready guise wearing a Plaid badge means Tesla is getting serious about it.
