IRS Deems Some Tesla Model Ys Too Light for EV Tax Credit - Jalopnik​

Two-row versions of the Model Y aren't heavy enough to be classified as SUVs for the higher MSRP cap bracket.

The five-seat versions of the Tesla Model Y may not be eligible for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Engadget spotted that our friends at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) haven’t categorized specific variants of the electric crossover as sports utility vehicles.

In theory, every Model Y could be eligible for the federal tax credit under the new 2023 guidelines. The four-door hatchback easily exceeds the minimum seven-kilowatt-hour battery capacity requirement and is assembled in the United States by a qualifying manufacturer.

However, the five-seat, two-row versions of the Model Y are too light to be considered SUVs by the IRS. The federal taxation agency requires SUVs to weigh more than 6,000 pounds. No Model Y exceeds 4,400 pounds.

All-wheel-drive Model Ys could have been classified as SUVs having met the weight requirement, if they also met several axles and ground clearance requirements.

The vehicle type categorization might seem insignificant, but it drastically shifts the MSRP limit for credit eligibility.

The price cap for vans, SUVs and pickup trucks is $8,000. For all other qualifying vehicles, the cap is $55,000. This cap is where the Model Y runs into its crucial dilemma.

The Tesla Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance currently retail at $65,990 and $69,990, respectively. Both trims are priced below the cap for SUVs but above the cutoff for cars.

The new guidelines are set to be finalized this March, so they could be amended to include all Model Ys.

The federal government aims to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, but these guidelines encourage manufacturers to build heavier EVs to sell them at higher prices.

Though, the consequences of promoting larger vehicle sales aren’t unknown. For example, road damage caused by vehicles driving over the surface increase exponentially with vehicle weight.

Literally everything can be made better with a lift kit, wide arches and all-terrain tyres. And the latest proof is this Tesla Model Y modified by German tuner delta4x4: meet the Model Y ‘Offroad’.

Taking an uninspiring visage and transforming it into something a little more utilitarian has clearly worked wonders for the Y’s self-esteem, because its modifiers now reckon it’s the perfect car for silently traversing “through desert and woods”.

The surgery is as follows. There’s a newly developed suspension ‘distance kit’ that lifts the Y by 35mm. The tracks have been widened, accommodated by wider wheel arches that add a further 60mm to its width. delta4x4 call them ‘highly appealing’ wheel arches, and you’d be hard pushed to disagree.

Tesla Model Y Standard Range AWD is back

The Standard Range of the AWD Model Y is back after a short hiatus. Tesla has quietly slipped the model back into the lineup and slapped a $64,000 starting price on it with only 40 units available from stock in the US to start with.

Quite a while back, Elon Musk, the multi-tasking CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, Twitter and few other businesses, promised the Model Y was going to be the world’s best selling car. While we are still waiting for that to happen, it has to be said that the car is selling rather well and it certainly is at the top of electric car sales.

First picked up by Twitter user The Kilowatts, the “new” Tesla Model Y Standard Range is equipped with the 4680 battery cells and sports 269 miles of range. It is listed for sale at $63,990 which was about $2,000 less than the 330 mile capable Long Range version until last week.

With the latest sweeping price cuts from Tesla, the Model Y Long Range now has a sticker price of $52,990, even the Performance model sits at $56,990. Why would anyone buy a Standard Range for $7,000 more than the Performance version?

Fancy 22-inch wheels and lowered suspension on your family EV? It’s your lucky day

German tuner Novitec seems to spend most of its time giving McLarens and Ferraris in excess of 1,000bhp, but today it has found some time to go electric with a freshly modified Tesla Model Y.

Before you get excited about warp speed acceleration and sub-two second 0-62mph times though, you should know that Novitec doesn’t actually touch the Tesla’s powertrain. Best to read our full review for more on that then.

What Novitec does do is fit a full carbon fibre bodykit that includes a lip spoiler up front, side skirts down the, um, sides and a ducktail spoiler plus diffuser round the back. It also drops the Model Y by up to 40mm with new height-adjustable sports suspension, while the wheels are 22-inch forged items created by US brand Vossen. They certainly look snazzy, but we can’t help feeling the ride might suffer.

That’s about it for changes on the car you see above, but Novitec adds that it can “create exquisite interiors in any desired colour and with individual upholstery designs by customer request". Yikes, what kind of creations are we likely to see?

Tesla explains its heat pump technology in new promo video

Not all EVs have heat pumps, but really, they should - aside from, perhaps, those sold in places where it doesn't ever get cold. As our glossary definition explains in detail, EVs don't have the ability to use the same heating system as ICE cars do. Those reuse engine exhaust heat, but obviously there's no such thing on an EV. So the choice is either a conventional system or a heat pump, the latter being much more power efficient.

Tesla perhaps thought these facts weren't known enough by most people, and so the company decided to upload a new promo video to its official YouTube channel today. And yes, it's all about heat pumps - specifically Tesla's heat pumps, and why they're very good to have. Take a look for yourself:


 
Tesla Model Y delivery wait times increase in Europe

It appears Tesla's price cuts from earlier this month have given the desired result as the Model Y saw its delivery wait times increase. The boost in consumer demand, combined with the Berlin Gigafactory's troubles with production is having the expected result in Europe.

Initially, wait times for the standard RWD configuration were January-February, but they are now February-March. The Long Range and Performance versions are also being slightly delayed and will ship within the January-February period.

 
Tesla Touchscreens Could Get Physical Buttons Thanks to the Aftermarket

A third-party device could bring buttons and dials to the dashboard of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y might soon have the option of physical buttonsand knobs to give owners tactile control over certain functions buried in the touchscreen. Rather than furiously tap and slide on climate settings or other features that have no business behind a screen, Tesla owners can look forward to an aftermarket accessory called the Ctrl-Bar that adds actual buttons to their screens. That is, if the crowdfunded input device can make it to production.

The Ctrl-Bar promises to easily add a strip of physical buttons to the bottom of the infotainment display of the Tesla Model 3 and Y, putting a host of features at your fingertips. OK, so a touchscreen does the same thing, but it’s just not as satisfying. Greenmission made the Ctrl-Bar to get around that in the Model 3 and Y, all while making sure installing the device is easy and straightforward.


 
Tesla Model Y's wheel falls off on the highway

A brand new Tesla Model Y's steering wheel reportedly fell off on the highway just 6 days after the vehicle was delivered to one New Jersey resident.

Twitter user Prerak reported that he was with his family, driving on the highway when all of a sudden the wheel of his brand new Tesla Model Y fell off. Luckily there was no traffic about and he managed to safely pull aside.

He shared the entire process of towing the car to Tesla and even shared his conversations with Tesla support. Initially, he was charged the $103.96 repair bill, but Tesla later waived the charge.

The damage has been done, however, and Prerak says he's lost faith in Tesla and wants to return the vehicle, which may or may not be possible.

Tesla achieves yet another production milestone at Giga Berlin

Tesla’s German Gigafactory is getting closer and closer to its intended production capacity. The factory was opened in 2021 and the company considers it to be working at full speed when 5,000 units of Model Y leave the production line every week.

Giga Berlin achieved a few milestones last year and in December it celebrated achieving a production rate of 3,000 vehicles per week. It fell short of the intended goal of 4,000 vehicles per week by the end of 2022 but it was still a huge achievement against the backdrop of supply chain issues, shortages and related delays.

Finally, today, Tesla announced that the team at Giga Berlin achieved production rate of 4,000 tesla Model Y vehicles in a single week. It puts the factory at 200,000 vehicles per year production rate which is nearly the 5,000 weekly production rate that Tesla considers to be full speed production.

This is great news for the company, it means the all-important profit margins are finally moving in the right direction for Giga Berlin and the factory is approaching its profitability threshold. At 5,000 vehicles a week, Giga Berlin turns from money pit to money printer.

Tesla Plans Model Y Update for 2024: Report

Tesla’s best-selling Model Y EV will get an updated interior and styling in 2024, four years after it first launched.

For Tesla, a lot of exciting things are happening over the coming year. The Model 3 is reportedly finally getting an update, six years after first launching; the Cybertruck might finally reach production, maybe; and now a new report suggests that the Model Y is due a refresh as well. Busy year indeed.

According to a new report from Reuters, Tesla is hard at work on an update for the Model Y SUV, which was first launched back in 2019 before deliveries began in 2020. Since then, the design for the electric SUV has remained unchanged and it’s kept its sparse, or minimalist, interior ever since.

Now, with increased competition from legacy manufacturers, Tesla has been slowly working to update its model lineup, and lower the prices for its cars. These updates could be coming to the Model Y from 2024, reports Reuters:

The changes to the Model Y – code-named Project Juniper at Tesla – involve the exterior and interior of the crossover electric vehicle with a target of starting production in 2024, according to two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the planning remains private.

Tesla is readying a production revamp of its top-selling Model Y, according to three people with knowledge of the plan.

The changes to the Model Y – code-named Project Juniper - involve the exterior and interior of the electric vehicle (EV) with a target of starting production in 2024, according to two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the planning remains private.

A revamp of the Model Y would mean Tesla is on track to offer new versions of its top-selling models over the next two years, addressing pressure in markets like China and the United States for a visible reboot of its best-selling vehicles in the face of increasing options for EV buyers.

Tesla did not immediately comment when asked by Reuters about the plans for the Model Y, a crossover EV which was its best seller in California, China and Europe last year.

At Tesla's investor day, CEO Elon Musk and other executives declined to discuss specifics of new models.

The boss got his ModelY delivered in late December. Due to insane demand and delivery pressure, they had Giga-Berlin , which apparently is only supposed to produce Model-Y performance models, ramp up production of Long range models.

This resulted in some oddities...so the boss's Long Range is full of features that should only be available on the Performance variant. I'm guessing they ran out of parts and/or time and just installed what they had to get the vehicles out the door.

Some of this include certain LED lights, trim, battery capacity etc. He also received performance wheels instead of the normal ones.

Makes me wonder if they decided on which parts to "upgrade" or if it was just a case of "use what we have where its needed".

And as mentioned, he had the S-plaid as a loaner while the modelY's heatpump got fixed. Apparently 50% of all long ranges produced in the last quarter were affected by this design flaw/faulty part.
