The Tesla Model Y Thread

There's a nifty companion app for Tesla cars called Tessie. It hooks into the tesla APIs and does a bunch of data gathering and calculations, as well as having an alexa skill.. (alexa, warm up the car type vibes).

My home charger integrates with my energy company and with the tesla back end, to only charge during cheap time, and also to only charge during the minimum demand periods overnight, while still getting enough in to do a charge to 100%. This maximises use of renewable energy.

Loving this tech!
I had some solid hands-on time with my brother’s “povo spec” M3 last year. My view of the tech (SW) mirror yours & is pretty much unmatched. In many ways Tesla is still so far ahead of the curve. As a “computer on wheels” specifically, as a car less so. There is a reason for years & years Tesla was/is referred to as a SW company & not a car company.

The MY is not bad as a car. A bit stiff in the ride but that's something I'm used to and don't mind. The seats are really comfortable, as is the drive. As a practical, efficient way of getting myself (and whatever I want to move) from A to B it ticks the boxes. So as a car it's not behind the curve at all imho. It looks the business as well.

Nice little software update dropped this morning. Amongst being able to select a larger font for the display (yay), some more bongs and beeps, and more functionality for the left steering wheel button, you can now also attend a Zoom meeting using the touchscreen and internal camera... But audio only mode unless you're in Park.

Tesla Model 3 and Y prices go up again

Tesla's pricing has been a roller coaster since the beginning of this year, with changes up and down constantly. The overall trend is still downwards, although the latest price change adds a few extra bucks to the Model 3 and Model Y prices in the US and China.

The good news is that the price hike is quite modest. Both models add $250 to their prices in the US and CNY 2,000 in China, which is around $290. Going by previous price changes, the European market will likely follow suit sooner rather than later, but we can hope the price increase is just as small.

Jokes aside, grats my dude! I'm saving my pennies to finally get a Y, but will see how things go. Due to where I live, I kinda have to get AWD and long range.

Drove in the boss's, amazing vehicle all round.

Fecking hell, the polar bears didn't eat Voicy after all!

Tesla Model Y with BYD batteries enters production in Germany

Local German publication Teslamag is reporting that Giga Berlin began production of the Tesla Model Y equipped with the LFP battery pack manufactured by BYD. The report states that the battery is installed in the new base trim of the Model Y RWD.

Tesla has been quietly launching the entry-level Model Y across various markets but those vehicles have very little in common. The entry-level Model Y in the US is now simply called Model Y and it has only one electric motor powering the rear wheels, it has an EPA rating of 279 miles and it does 0/60 mph in 5.0 seconds. This one starts at $49,990.

An entry-level Model Y in Canada on the other hand starts at an equivalent of $43,800 and it has a 245 miles range - that’s because it comes with a LFP battery pack. And it isn’t an entirely new trim either, it has been available in Europe as Model Y SR+ RWD.

The difference between those vehicles and one reported by Teslamag is that until now LFP battery packs came from CATL and had a 60 kWh capacity. The one reported comes from BYD and after little digging around, we found an EU-type approval for the Tesla Model Y with a structural LFP battery with a capacity of 55 kWh. The battery manufacturer? BYD.

WLTP rates the new battery pack at 440 km which is 15 km less than the CATL pack offers, the EPA rating is not available yet but it will be lower as well than that of the current LFP battery.

Tesla Model Y in Midnight Cherry now available in Europe

Tesla’s Gigafactory in Berlin has the most advanced paint shop out of all Tesla’s manufacturing plants and the company is ramping up its marketing efforts for the Model Y now available to order in a Midnight Cherry red. This multilayer finish joins the Quicksilver option and can be ordered for May to June delivery.

For years Tesla buyers could have ordered any of its vehicles in any color they wanted - as long as it was white, black, red, or blue. The company did it to simplify the lineup and with the demand for Tesla remaining high for years, the customers didn’t mind at all. As the EV market matures though, and competition is growing, Tesla was forced into offering more choices to entice the new buyers - hence the new colors for Model S, Model X, and now Model Y.

After announcing the Quicksilver paint option for Model Y earlier on, the company took to Twitter to confirm the Midnight Cherry, deep multilayer red finish can be now specified when ordering a new vehicle. For now, that option is available for vehicles ordered in Europe only and it comes at €3,200 extra - that’s €200 more than the Quicksilver option.

Until last year Tesla has been riding the wave of demand for its vehicles but with its production ramping up the demand started to vanish. The company started this year with aggressive price cuts which initially did help to shift more cars but after more unannounced price cuts, customers put the brakes on and decided to play the waiting game with Tesla.
