Tesla expands Model Y portfolio with seven-seat option in Europe
Tesla has rolled out a seven-seat configuration for its popular Model Y in Europe, catering to larger families or those needing extra passenger capacity. The option is currently available exclusively for the Long Range all-wheel drive variant, adding €2,500 to the base price. This brings the starting price to €57,490 in Germany and £53,500 in the UK.
The third row features two forward-facing seats that fold down when not in use. Tesla emphasizes the ease of access to the third row, thanks to buttons on the second-row seats that slide and fold them forward. Two USB-C ports are provided in the third row for charging devices. But don't expect adults to fit in them comfortably - these are "jump seats" designed for kids.
Naturally, the addition of a third row impacts cargo space. With all seven seats in use, the Model Y offers 363 l of storage in the trunk. Combined with the 117 l front trunk, this provides a total of 480 l of cargo capacity. Folding down the third-row seats increases the cargo space to 753 l. For comparison, the five-seat Model Y offers 854 l with the rear seats up and a maximum of 2,158 l with the rear seats folded down. The seven-seat configuration offers a maximum of 2,040 l of cargo space.
Tesla looks to position the seven-seat Model Y as the ultimate family vehicle. In its press release, the company stated, "The Model Y was designed from the outset to be the perfect family SUV, offering great versatility. Hundreds of thousands of households worldwide have chosen the Model Y as their primary vehicle for their daily commute and long-distance journeys. With the introduction of the 7-seater option in Germany, we are taking versatility to a new level."
