Indeed, a thousand pardons. I was just peeved at a particular mygaming article recently.

Ah the old 'all the other reviewers are buttsucking sycophants' line of logic. Gotcha.

Seriously, it's time to upgrade those mybb gaming computers. 8800gt doesn't cut it these days. :D

I am not calling other reviews anything, I just seriously fail to see how Empire: Total War managed to do so well with them, and how there is such a discrepancy between the user reception and the critics.

The point of reading different reviews is to get a varied set of opinions and experiences. What is the point if all reviewers give a game the same response?

And then you criticize the reviewer for having a different opinion to everyone else? Rather find something specific in the review that you disagree with, then we can discuss it.

I agree, we need new gaming PCs :D and there is one coming shortly

BUT, the 8800GT is not terrible, and most games run very well on it. The fact that Empire did not, while others do, points to a problem within the game's optimization rather than with the graphics card.

Ok I owe you an apology tbh. Having read more extensively it seems like a lot of people are having problems with AI and bugginess in E:TW.

Hi Guys

This is my first post.

I noticed that there is no Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 on that list. If it were not for those games then would multiplayer/LANS/CLANS be of such importance nowadays? I think Forza 2 should be on that list. It's a sim masterpiece;)

And I'm glad there is no Halo 3 on that list:D

I think this is potentially a well thought out list but I feel it lacks games like Doom 3 and Fear which are a genre unto themselves. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and or Splinter Cell could have easily replaced a title like Little Big Planet purely because I think some of the titles on the list are too new to call influential.

I can imagine a list like this is always going to be faced with criticism and comment. The list is certainly better then I anticipated. Nice.

Hey Fox, welcome

I just want to point out that this list was about importance to gaming rather than popularity. We didn't feel that games like Unreal made as much of an impact in pushing the envelope as the others did.

You have something with Counterstrike although we felt, from the Half Life series, HL2 would be the best choice.

In terms of being vital to LANS/CLANS we also felt that COD 4 would more than represent that side of gaming.

Halo 3 is indeed on the list. ;)

was released exactly ten years after Metal Gear Solid and twenty years after the US release of Metal Gear. As of 31 December, 2008 the game had shifted over 4.5 million copies.

people wonder why the pc game market is collapsing :p

A pretty good list considering the mammoth task of narrowing it down to 13. How could you possibly omit Portal though? Ask anyone actually in the industry to list their top influential games this decade and Portal is bound to top those lists. A bit more discussion on why certain titles would be considered so important would have been nice.

@cerebrus, I would have to agree with Gladiator on the significance of Mirror's Edge. It's combination of first person perspective, blazing fast platforming gameplay, ballsy difficulty level and creative visual design really takes gaming back to it's pure arcade roots without sacrificing on presentation quality. It has a feel like no other game before it.

This lists makes no sense.
How can you have Fallout 3 and not Oblivian? Surely Oblivian was more influencial?
How can you have a whole bunch of shooters and no sports, racing, or proper strategy games? And Portal and Shadow of the Collossus?

Dude, they're totally different games. Entirely unrelated in substance, story, game mechanics... everything. All they share is the engine. Is it not possible for one company to own the rights to more than one game on the list...?

if anything counterstrike might be considered to be more important than half life. How many people play half life today vs counterstrike?

This article is seriously confused.

It starts by describing itself as listing the most influential games of the decade, and then veers straight into listing the top rated games of 2007-2008. How can you even judge the influence that a game has had after such a short period?

Why list Halo 3 as an "influential game"? Wouldn't Halo 1 be more influential since it built the whole Halo franchise and defined the game style? Same with games like Fallout 3, what exactly has Fallout 3 "influenced"? Oblivion on the other hand could easily be called influential.

Or did daddy just buy you your first computer a couple of years ago, and these are the first games you've seen? :D ;)

My list in no particular order:

2001 - World Of Warcraft.

2002 - Morrowind. Unparalleled 3d world open endedness.

2000 - The sims. Got girls to play games

2000 - Counterstrike. Showed how successful a mod can be

2006? - Mount&Blade. Love it or hate it. Everything about this game is different. From gameplay to the way its published

2007 - Crysis. Not revolutionary gameplay, but it was influential in that every other game's graphics is compared it to it, and it made everyone buy new cards just to see if they could play it.

2001 - Serious sam brought fun back to fps's

2003 - NFS Underground. Brought tappat back to racing games

2004 - Doom 3. K@k game, but the engine was used by the likes of Prey, and COD 4

2002 - GTA 3. Violent sandbox used by outspoken anti-gaming activists everywhere

2004 - HL2. Jaw dropping physics.

Who made up that list?

Why GTA: San Andreas? GTAIII was the revolutionary GTA game.
Counterstrike?
F.E.A.R.?
Quake 2, 3 and 4?
Who remembers Delta Force? Especially Delta Force: Land Warrior. It was the ultimate FPS! It was a massive big deal game in 2001.
Gran Turismo 2? I think it was released 2000 or 2001? It was on PS1. Gran Turismo 3 MADE the PS2.

And why only 13 games? It's impossible to pick out only a Top 13.

A very good point you made there.

Trying to pick a few games released this decade to make a list of influential titles is asking for a good flaming. The article would have been better off focusing on the improvement of each genre since 2000, including some influential features we may or may not have seen.
