The Tornadoes, Cyclones, Hurricanes & Typhoons Thread.

TC 02S has officially been named Belal. The long-term trajectory is quite curved, with somewhat slower passage, and affecting both Reunion and Mauritius in the same track!

TC Belal is expected to pass directly over the island of Reunion later today (Mon 15th). The extended track shows a recurve, with the cyclone potentially reversing track later in the week (although no direct threat to land).

Flooding reported, but wind damage not as bad as expected:
One person was killed in Réunion, where the population of some 860,000 people was ordered to shelter at home, but authorities said the eye of the storm had avoided the island.

Around a quarter of households on the island had no electricity on Monday.
The storm has already brought driving rain to Mauritius, with pictures and video posted to social media showing vehicles being submerged or washed away.

The trouble with tropical storms in the channel is their unpredictability as already seen by the way this one is moving back and forth. The storm could just as easily move further south or even inland. Will need watching.

Already checking in with my macadamia farmer friend in Hazyview....

Except of course if it were to cross over into the channel instead .... Generally though, their projections are pretty spot on.

Tropical Cyclone Hidaya

Tropical cyclone (MFR)
Category 1 tropical cyclone (SSHWS)
Duration30 April – Present
Peak intensity130 km/h (80 mph) (10-min);
976 hPa (mbar)
Further information: List of off-season South-West Indian Ocean tropical cyclones
On April 30, a zone of disturbed weather was formed near Seychelles. Later, MFR started issuing initial advisories that could form in the following days. JTWC followed suit and also issued a TCFA. On May 2, its LLCC became organized, which resulted in gaining the name Hidaya from the MMS. JTWC also followed suit and gave its identifier as Tropical Cyclone 23S. Hidaya's low-level circulation center and its deep convective banding began to wrap into the system along the southern semicircle of the system.[103] On May 3, Hidaya rapidly intensified into a Category-1 cyclone after it drastically symmetrized over the past 12 hours

Not quite on the scale of the stuff above , but ... :) So we're visiting my son, his wife and grandson in Tallahassee Florida. On Friday morning just after 6 we left for Clearwater to spend the weekend with her folks. 5 minutes later the radio and other mobile devices just started blaring out Tornado alerts ! We knew there were some to the west, but these were coming straight at Tally !. Continued on our merry way south out of town, hitting some serious wind and rain along the way. Few more alerts and 30 minutes later we've left that mess behind. Had we left 15 min later, we would've crossed paths. According to the stats and feedback, more damage caused in town that the past 3 hurricanes combined
