Next-generation Toyota GT86 expected by 2019

Toyota has confirmed plans for a second generation of the 197bhp rear-wheel-drive sports car; soft-top version of the current generation is unlikely

Toyota has confirmed that the GT86 sports car will continue into a second generation, with a likely onsale date of 2018-2019.

“The GT86 is at the stage where it’s being decided on the next one,” Toyota Europe boss Karl Schlicht revealed. “Then a chief engineer will be assigned and away we go.”

The 197bhp rear-wheeldrive GT86 has carved out a niche as a fun driver’s car, but like most sports models, its strong early sales have subsequently subsided.

“The GT86 will carry on,” said Schlicht. “The car serves a big purpose. We are not getting out of that business. Sporty cars go through their phases. It’s our intention to continue with that car.”

Continued co-operation with Subaru also looks likely but is as yet unconfirmed.

“Will it be with Subaru?” said Schlicht. “I don’t know. But for the concept to carry on, with the low engine, we’d have to do that. There are a lot of reasons to continue with Subaru.”

A key engineering feature of the GT86 is its low-slung Subaru flat four engine, which keeps the centre of gravity low for better handling.

Schlicht also suggested that a soft-top version of the GT86 was unlikely. “We wouldn’t do it on the current model,” he said. “That doesn’t mean dealers wouldn’t like one, but there are so many other priorities that I don’t think we’ve got spare capacity for that.”

The new GT86 will sit below the reborn Supra in Toyota’s sports car line-up. The bigger coupé is currently in development with BMW, whose version will replace the Z4 roadster.

“That co-operation is going well,” said Schlicht. “It’s on track. It’s being done in Europe. Our version is a different car from BMW’s.”

Screw the 86, I want to know more about this unholy alliance.

With the fitment of a 419kW V8 engine from a Ferrari 458 Italia, the Toyota 86 goes from underpowered to… well, just damn perfect for drifting, as this video, compiled by Donut Media, so aptly illustrates.

Quite appropriately it’s dubbed the GT4586 and here we see its creator Ryan Tuerck haul it sideways around the Willow Springs International Raceway for its first track test session. Later on Chris Forsberg and his demo Nissan 370Z join in the fun.

No 153KW boost on the facelift?

Nope looks like 200bhp still:

"Driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the 1,998cc 16-valve DOHC unit produces a maximum 200 DIN hp/147kW at 7,000rpm and 205Nm of torque between 6,400 and 6,600rpm. Nought to 100km/h acceleration can be achieved in 7.6 seconds with manual transmission, 8.2 seconds for the automatic."

2017 Toyota 86 Details

The 2017 incarnation of the Toyota 86 is not dramatically different to the outgoing model. There are a few visual changes but the engine remains the same. There will be three models available, two manuals and one automatic. Kicking off the range is the 2.0 Standard manual, which offers up air-conditioning, analogue speedometer, and fabric trim. Next up is the 2.0 High manual, which adds on cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, climate control, digital/analog speedometer and leather seats. The last model in the range is the 2.0 High Automatic, which brings a clutchless option to the party and the automatic transmission is a six-speed unit. The base model loses out on 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps and rear spoiler.

All three derivatives are powered by a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder motor pushing out 147 kW and 205 Nm. The 0-100 kph sprint is dispatched in just 7.6 seconds for the manually-equipped 86s, while the automatic does the same in 8.2 seconds. A top speed of 226 kph is possible, while the automatic makes do with a top end of 210 kph.

In terms of safety technology, all three models feature 7 airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, hill assist and vehicle stability control as standard.

So we're not getting the upgraded engine in ZA? Besides some other tuning, in manual form, it produces 5kw more than the automatic.
