Toyota SA Launches Hilux Custom Builds Range

Toyota SA has launched its Hilux Custom Builds range, a conversion programme designed to give customers commercial solutions directly from Toyota dealerships.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has officially launched its Hilux Custom Builds range, a selection of OEM commercial solutions for fleet customers. The conversions are based on the single-cab flat-deck 2.4 GD-6 derivative, either with a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain. Every unit is developed in-house, tested to OEM standards and developed by Toyota engineers through Toyota Motor Corporation’s CVPP (Conversion Vehicle Partner Programme).

The Hilux Custom Builds are designed to give customers a manufacturer-backed commercial solution that can be sourced through Toyota’s dealership network as an alternative to aftermarket conversions. Toyota claims that the range of configurations was designed to provide structural integrity, compatibility and long-term durability, with all variations tested on home soil to meet quality, reliability and performance expectations.

The selection of seven configurations includes steel or aluminium drop sides, cargo rails with optional drop sides, full or field-technician canopies, and drybox solutions for closed equipment storage. The Hilux Custom Build conversions are tailored for practical industries such as agriculture, mining, construction, field service or logistics.

As a reminder, the Hilux single-cab 2.4 GD-6 on which the Hilux Custom Builds are based is equipped with a 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine churning out 110 kW and 400 N.m of torque. The standard version of this variant is priced from R392 100 (not including the price of the Custom Builds conversion).

Toyota says the Hilux Custom Builds series sets the quality benchmark for such conversions. It also simplifies ownership for customers by ensuring every aspect of the vehicle is supported through a single service channel. In addition, it makes the purchasing process of specialised vehicles more streamlined, as the vehicle can be ordered and delivered as a complete unit, eliminating the need for third-party installations. This approach helps protect the vehicle’s resale value by ensuring the full build is officially documented.

Developed entirely in-house and professionally engineered, the builds have been tested to OEM standards and are delivered through their national dealer network.

The programme eliminates the reliance on aftermarket fitment and gives customers a seamless, factory-backed alternative without affecting the warranties.

How it works

Each build begins with a dedicated flat-deck Hilux 2.4 GD-6 (4X2 or 4X4) base unit. Working within Toyota Motor Corporation’s CVPP (Conversion Vehicle Partner Programme) framework, Toyota engineers have developed a range of configurations from first principles, ensuring structural integrity, compatibility and long-term durability.

All builds are evaluated under South African conditions to confirm that they meet the same quality, reliability and performance expectations as the vehicles themselves.

Customers can select from conversions such as steel or aluminium dropsides, cargo rails with optional dropsides, full or field-technician canopies and drybox solutions for secure equipment storage.

These options cater to industries that rely on practical, reliable workhorses, whether in agriculture, mining, construction, field service or logistics.

The integrated nature of the offering means that every conversion is designed by Toyota engineers, tested to original equipment standards and supported by the brand’s three-year/100,000km warranty, which mirrors that of the base vehicle.

 
1982 Toyota Hilux Transformed Into Tyre-Shredding Bakkie

Australian YouTube duo Mighty Car Mods has created the ultimate sleeper in the form of a turbocharged Toyota Hilux.

While the Toyota Hilux has earned a reputation as a tough-as-nails work bakkie, this third-generation Hilux was built to shred tyres. After buying the car online, the folks at Mighty Car Mods modified this example to put down some added power – all while sporting an unassuming exterior.

This 1982 Hilux is powered by the Japanese automaker’s 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor, sourced from a more modern generation of Hilux. However, for this build, Mighty Car Mods has equipped the (originally naturally aspirated) 2TR unit with breathing apparatus in the form of turbocharging. Now producing around 119 kW, the turbocharged 2.7-litre mill is coupled with a modern five-speed manual transmission, replete with an upgraded Xtreme Outback clutch. Also fitted to this Hilux are a front-mounted intercooler, a custom driveshaft, a limited-slip rear differential, larger brakes, and a custom exhaust system. A Haltech ECU was added to manage the drive-by-wire Subaru throttle pedal.


 
Outgoing Toyota Hilux Handed New Hilux’s Face

An entrepreneur from Thailand has handed the outgoing Toyota Hilux a fresh new face…in the shape of the new Hilux’s.

Scheduled to launch in South Africa in 2026, the new Toyota Hilux was officially revealed on 10 November 2025. However, if you’re not quite ready to part with your eighth-generation model, but want to “refresh” it with the ninth iteration’s face, an entrepreneur from Thailand offers such a conversion.

Posted on Facebook by Pasit Reddevill, the images show that the conversion not only comprises fitting the new Hilux’s front end to the outgoing model’s, however. Indeed, the rear end receives a similar treatment, with taillamps similar to the next-generation Hilux’s replacing that of the outgoing, current iteration. And those with a keen eye will notice the ‘GR’ badge on the front grille. (A virtual artist recently released a render of how the next Hilux GR-Sport could look like.)

As a reminder, the ninth-generation Hilux retains the outgoing model’s ladder-frame chassis, along with the Japanese automaker’s tried-and-tested 2.8GD-6 motor, available in “standard” and 48 V mild-hybrid formats. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel mill is endowed with 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque (or 420 N.m in the six-speed manual derivatives). The new Hilux will be available with 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains.

2026 Bakkie Brawl: Hilux, D-Max and Ranger all getting upgrades - here's what to expect

2026 will be a big year for South Africa’s bakkie market, with the country’s three best-selling stalwarts all due to receive updates.

The most comprehensive of these is the top-selling Toyota Hilux, which receives significant exterior and interior enhancements as well as under-the-skin upgrades.

The Isuzu D-Max is also set to receive a facelift, while Ford’s Ranger will see a range realignment take place alongside a few subtle cosmetic tweaks.

All three vehicles are locally manufactured for local consumption and export, and that status will continue for all three following the 2026 upgrades.

New Toyota Hilux

Falling somewhere between a new generation and a comprehensive facelift, the new Toyota Hilux has been confirmed for South African introduction in 2026, but specific launch timing and other details remain under wraps.

The newcomer retains the current version’s basic architecture and body shell, but the front and rear ends have been completely redesigned, and the interior is completely new, as well.

Inside, the all-new dashboard features a more horizontal shape, and it incorporates a ‘floating’ touchscreen, available in 7.0-inch and 12.3-inch guises, depending on the model.

Technologically, the Hilux has been brought up to date with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a digital instrument cluster and electronic park brake.

Under the bonnet, the familiar 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine carries over, with outputs of 150kW and 500Nm, and mild hybrid tech continues to be available. The current 2.4 GD-6 diesel and normally aspirated petrol motors will likely also be retained for the South African market.

Beneath the skin, the new Hilux also sees upgrades to the chassis and traction control systems, including the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system, which is available on certain variants overseas.

An all-electric model has also been released overseas, but there is no word on whether this will ever be released locally.

New Toyota Hilux Awarded Top Marks for Safety

The new Toyota Hilux has been awarded the full complement of five stars at a recent ANCAP safety test.

Following the official reveal of the new Toyota Hilux in November 2025, the latest generation of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie has scored the full complement of five stars at a recent ANCAP safety test. The ninth-generation Hilux performed well in all four safety assessment categories; scoring 84% in the Adult Occupant Protection category, 89% for Child Occupant Protection and 82% for both Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist.

The new Hilux features an upgraded suite of safety features. This includes multiple airbags – including dual front, side chest, side head, and driver knee – autonomous emergency braking, a pre-collision safety system, lane-keep assist, lane departure alert, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control and a reverse-view camera supplemented by park distance sensors are also present, with higher-specced models gaining a 360-degree surround-view camera array. Downhill assist is present in 4×4 models.

A Toyota engineer has revealed why the Japanese brand opted to stick with the IMV platform for the new Hilux, rather than shift the bakkie to the more modern TNGA-F architecture…

Wondering why Toyota opted not to underpin the new Hilux with its latest TNGA-F platform, instead sticking with an updated version of the long-in-the-tooth IMV architecture? Well, a high-ranking Toyota engineer says 4 specific reasons informed the Japanese brand’s decision.

Anyarat Sutthibenjakul, Regional Chief Engineer at Toyota Motor Asia, told carsales.com.au that while the automotive giant indeed investigated a potential switch to the TNGA-F platform (as employed by North America’s Tacoma, for instance), it ultimately decided to build the 9th-generation Hilux on the IMV underpinnings.

Why? Well, Sutthibenjakul suggested the decision to stick with the IMV platform was informed by the following 4 factors: QDR (quality, durability and reliability), off-road performance, safety performance and total cost of ownership.

Based on her comments to the Australian publication, the latter appeared to be the key driver of this strategy. In short, she suggested moving the Hilux to the more modern TNGA-F architecture would simply have made the final product too expensive to buy and maintain, compared to the outgoing version.
