New Toyota Hilux pricing revealed: Here's what you get for your money

Toyota has announced pricing for its heavily updated Hilux range, which goes on sale later this month.

The initial line-up is limited to Xtra Cab and Double Cab models, powered exclusively by the 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine. Single Cabs and other derivatives are expected to follow in due course.

Without further ado, here's what you can expect to pay for the new models:

This is the first time that the workhorse-spec SRX has been available with the 2.8-litre engine, while the Raider and Legend models are available exclusively as 4x4 variants, at least for the time being.

How does pricing compare to the old model? The price of the 2.8 Raider 4x4 has risen from R867,200 to R982,900. The Legend 4x4, now boasting mild-hybrid technology as standard, tops out just below the R1 million mark, with the non-hybrid version having previously sold for R903,400 in standard form and R1,005,000 in RS roller-shutter guise.

Toyota South Africa Motors recently confirmed pricing for initial derivatives in its 9th-generation Hilux range, each of which employs the brand’s familiar 2.8GD-6 turbodiesel powertrain. Interestingly, though, we also spotted the new Hilux BEV on the Japanese firm’s local website.

Included on a page providing an overview of the 9th-generation bakkie range (as well as featured on a dedicated new-energy vehicle page), the Hilux BEV is listed alongside the oil-burning Legend, Raider and SRX grades. However, the accompanying caption points out the battery-powered Hilux “is not commercially available” in South Africa.

Riaan Esterhuysen, Senior Manager for Public Relations & Corporate Communication at Toyota SA Motors, recently told Cars.co.za during a podcast that the new Hilux BEV is “still in its infancy in terms of an LCV [light commercial vehicle] execution, but it is proof of concept”.

“It will be on offer to the customers. We are bringing those in at a small sampling rate just to check local market response and also [to see] how well the product fares, our usage conditions, etcetera,” Esterhuysen explained. As a reminder, Toyota SA Motors performed a similar exercise with the RAV4 PHEV back in 2022, before quietly rolling it out to the local market in 2024.

Which Toyota Hilux model is the best overall package?

Now that we know what the new Hilux costs, it’s time to dissect this highly anticipated new Toyota’s spec sheet and find the variant that represents the best package.

Although Toyota has unrivalled brand equity in South Africa, and the Hilux has an incredibly loyal fanbase, the brand has been careful to keep pricing of the new model in check at launch. Toyota’s product planners know that the VW Amarok and Ford Ranger offer more powerful, sophisticated luxury double cabs with 3.0 V6 turbodiesel engines. These bakkie twins also have an automatic transmission with many more gears than the new Hilux.

That’s not to say that we won’t soon see more expensive versions of the new Toyota. You can be sure there will be Dakar and GR-S versions of the new Hilux coming to fulfil halo bakkie needs. But, for now, the interesting things to note are the return of the SRX trim at the entry level, plus the fact that only the 2.8-litre turbodiesel is offered, and only in 6-speed auto form.

New Toyota Hilux lineup

Listed on Toyota SA’s website, the local new Hilux lineup comprises seven derivatives across two body styles – double-cab and Xtra Cab. All models are equipped with the Japanese marque’s proven 2.8GD-6 powertrain, with the flagship double-cab variants incorporating 48 V mild-hybrid tech. A six-speed automatic transmission is employed across the range. Two drivetrain options are on offer: 4×2 and 4×4. The double-cab is available in SRX, Raider and Legend trim, while the Xtra Cab is exclusively offered in Raider X grade. Toyota has yet to announce the ninth-generation single-cab variants for our market.

Verdict

The new Toyota Hilux successfully executes a strategy of incremental evolution. It doesn’t rewrite the rulebook, choosing instead to modernise the cabin and ease the daily driving effort through lighter steering and enhanced comfort.

While its traditional 3-year/100 000 km warranty is mediocre against longer-backed rivals, Toyota’s massive local footprint, the Hilux’s proven mechanical reliability, and significantly upgraded interior ensure that it remains a deeply formidable and sensible proposition for the South African bakkie buyer. Job well done!

When the 9th-generation Toyota Hilux hit the market in South Africa earlier in June 2026, all 7 derivatives in the truncated line-up featured the 2.8GD-6 turbodiesel engine (with the Legend grade adding a mild-hybrid system). But the automaker has now officially confirmed the 2.4GD-6 motor from the outgoing portfolio will survive, with plans to roll it out to the new range in early 2027.

Yes, Toyota SA Motors says the 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine is scheduled to join the local 9th-gen Hilux line-up in the opening quarter of 2027. While the 2.8GD-6 is currently available exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it seems the 2.4GD-6 unit in 9th-gen guise will be offered only in conjunction with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

As a reminder, Toyota SA Motors is taking a staggered approach to rolling out its new Hilux range – which is again produced at the Japanese brand’s Prospecton facility in KwaZulu-Natal – with only 2 extended-cab and 5 double-cab derivatives offered at launch. As such, select 8th-gen variants will soldier on for the time being.

Indeed, the 2.4GD-6 mill in question powers as many as 13 of these still-in-production 8th-gen derivatives. In its current form, the 2.4-litre oil-burner generates peak outputs of 110 kW and 400 Nm, though the latter figure drops to 343 Nm in the case of base single-cab derivatives, which are fitted with a 5-speed (rather than 6-speed) manual cog-swapper. It’s not yet clear if this engine will simply carry over unchanged or whether any modifications are on the cards.
