Well, the Toyota Hilux – bolstered by the arrival of the GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives – remained at the very top of the table, with the updated Ford Ranger (including the flagship Raptor) again having to settle for second place (after the first seven months of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 8 912 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

Meanwhile, the Nissan NP200 remained in third, with the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – just seven units behind in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 692 units of the D-Max and 31 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody held steady in fifth.

Thinking of upgrading to a bakkie soon. Between the Ranger 2.2 xl and the hilux 2.4 srx, leaning more to the hilux srx, more info entertainment inside, alloy wheels already included et c.

Will be a automatic as well. No 4x4...

Only downside is the warranty and services compared to the ford offerings.
 
High-performance Toyota Hilux GR? Yes, the rumour has returned

Rumours of a full-fat, high-performance Toyota Hilux from Gazoo Racing have returned, sparked by new comments from the Japanese firm’s sales and marketing boss in Europe.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Matthew Harrison said Toyota was “trying to build more of an obvious link to the GR brand, which is why we are establishing for each of our core models a GR Sport derivative”.

Of course, Toyota South Africa already offers the limited-edition Hilux GR Sport on local shores, with the flagship double-cab featuring an uprated suspension system and a handful of cosmetic enhancements.

But Harrison’s comments led various Australian publications to revisit the Hilux GR rumour, after Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing arm, earlier suggested such a vehicle was indeed on the cards.

“We won Dakar first with Hilux as Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa,” Tomoyama told news.com.au in June after the automaker enjoyed further success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Toyota Hilux GRMN: Should It Happen?

It's fantastic and refreshing to see typically conservative Toyota doing an about-turn and making cars that appeal to petrolheads as well as your regular commuter, but how far should Toyota go? With the meteoric rise of Toyota's Gazoo Racing brand, we think the sky's the limit and we could be seeing GR-branded Toyotas being rolled out regularly. One vehicle we've got our eye on is the popular Hilux. Toyota Hilux GRMN anyone?

An article from Australia suggests that the Hilux GRMN is coming. Chatting to CarsGuide.com, Toyota's senior manager of product communications, Vincent Dewaersegger spoke extensively about Gazoo's plans for the Toyota portfolio. "We cannot talk about future plans, but we can talk about intention. And our intention is of course to have more products and more derivatives, and this will be discussed car by car and model by model, based on whether it fits the purpose, and if there is a demand," he said. "But of course there is the intention - that's why we created the company. But I can't really comment much more than that, because it will be revealed in the course of the product launches. As a general company, the intention is to develop more (Gazoo) cars and more models.”

Now while this can be interpreted as a 'we will have a GR product in every model', it's highly unlikely that we'll see a Prius GR anytime soon. However, we can look at the mainstream models and given how much South Africa loves its bakkies, we think the Hilux is next.

Naturally, a hardcore performance Hilux will need some serious firepower under the bonnet for it to be worthy of the GRMN name. There's is where it gets fun as Toyota has quite an arsenal of engines to call upon. On one end of the scale is the mighty 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine which does duty in the Hilux Dakar race truck and in the Lexus RC F.

However, we suspect that Toyota's conservative background, as well as costings, will ensure that it's highly unlikely to see the light of day. We do know this engine is capable of fitting into a Hilux though, evident by the one-off Toyota Hilux REX which pumped out 335 kW and 600 Nm. So it is possible, but unlikely as extensive work will need to be done on the brakes and gearbox to cope with all that power. If there's one thing we've learnt about Toyota's way of doing things, everything is carefully thought out and meticulously planned. A brash decision does not exist in the Toyota vocabulary.

Latin NCAP, the new car assessment programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, has released the results of its crash tests of the Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner and Nissan Navara.

Of course, it’s worth noting the vehicles evaluated here differ in specification from the equivalent models offered in South Africa. Still, the results are interesting, particularly considering how seldom bakkies undergo safety tests.

So, how did the vehicles fare? Well, the Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie and Fortuner SUV (known in some markets as the SW4) both scored five stars for safety, in term of both adult and child occupant ratings. For the record, the models offered in Latin America are equipped with electronic stability control and seven airbags as standard.

And what about the Nissan Navara? Well, this bakkie settled for four stars, with just two airbags fitted as standard (note that SA-spec models feature seven airbags), along with stability control. Interestingly, Latin NCAP rated the Navara's body structure as “borderline unstable”.

According to Naamsa, August 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 537 units, representing a decline of 5,1 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (14 041 units), meanwhile, showed a small gain of 0,5 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the eighth month of 2019?

Toyota South Africa ordered to pull TV advert for new Hilux GR-Sport

The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has ordered Toyota South Africa Motors to withdraw a television advertisement for the new Hilux GR-Sport, ruling it “condones illegal behaviour” and is “offensive to a sector of the population”.

The commercial, which was created by agency FCB Joburg but has since been pulled from Toyota SA’s YouTube page, showed the special-edition double-cab bakkie being thrashed on the dunes, sending sand flying into the air.

The advert, which opened with a shot of three meerkats, ended with the Hilux’s driver alighting. He makes eye contact with the meerkats and nods, and they reciprocate.

Complaint David Lazarus argued the commercial “promotes and encourages” irresponsible and "illegal driving” on sand dunes, “ignoring the fact that the portrayed action is forbidden by South Africa's environmental laws and regulations relating to coastal areas”.

Louise McIntosh, the second complainant, submitted Toyota was “promoting off-road driving that is harmful to nature as the portrayed sand dunes are a natural habitat for small insects and animals”.

The local arm of the Japanese automaker responded that the advert was not shot in an “environmentally sensitive area” but in an industrial location (it was, in fact, filmed at the Philippi Sand Mine adjacent to Mitchells Plain near Cape Town).

“The intention was not to depict or condone ecologically irresponsible driving regardless of where the commercial was shot. The main vehicle in the commercial is mostly driving on existing paths and in the few instances where it is travelling over untracked sand, it does do not drive over any flora or fauna, just on sand. The vehicle was also not used to blast up, down or through sand dunes,” Toyota SA submitted.

ARB, though, ruled the advert breached Clause 3.3 of Section II, which states: “Advertisements should not contain anything which might lead or lend support to criminal or illegal activities, nor should they appear to condone such activities”.

“Given that the illegal behaviour condoned by the advertisement relates to an issue about which many people feel strongly – the preservation of South African beaches from off-road drivers and the protection of the environment – the depiction of this activity is also offensive to a sector of the population,” ARB added in its ruling.

The sales figures for September 2019 are in ... and the big news from our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies is that the Ford Ranger has regained its previously held top-two position. The Volkswagen Amarok, meanwhile, has dropped a spot.

According to Naamsa, September 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 49 191 units, representing a decline of 0,9 percent compared to September 2018. The light commercial segment (13 473 units), meanwhile, showed a small decline of 1,1 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the ninth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger besting the Nissan NP200 with 71 units to regain second place. Meanwhile, the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – held steady in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 197 units of the D-Max and seven units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody remained in the fifth spot, although sales went down by 195 units.
