The Toyota RAV4 Thread

It’s a lot more expensive to buy a Toyota Rav4 as base models fall away

With Toyota South Africa having invested heavily in producing the new Corolla Cross at its assembly plant in Prospecton, it makes sense that the company would eliminate internal competition from imported models. And that’s exactly what It has done with the Toyota Rav4.

Toyota SA has quietly dropped the Rav4 GX base models from the line-up, which means that the entry-point for the Rav4 range is now the 2.0 GX-R all-wheel drive model, which is priced at R606 600.

Until recently, you could buy a Toyota Rav4 2.0 GX manual base model for R494 500 or its auto equivalent for R507 600, but the models have been discontinued, along with the 2.5 Hybrid FWD GX model, which cost R560 900.

In addition to the aforementioned GX-R, Rav4 buyers can also opt for the more luxurious 2.0 VX model at R617 000, and which is now the only FWD model in the range. The 2.5 Hybrid GX-R AWD (R644 100) and 2.5 VX AWD (R702 300) continue to be available, while the line-up has been extended with a 2.5 Hybrid VX luxury model that’s priced at R723 200.

2022 Toyota Rav4 line-up:

  • 2.0 GX-R AWD – R606 600
  • 2.0 VX FWD – R617 000
  • 2.5 VX AWD – R702 300
  • 2.5 Hybrid GX-R AWD – R644 100
  • 2.5 Hybrid VX AWD – R723 200

Toyota RAV4 (2022) Specs & Price

The Toyota RAV4 range has been rejigged for 2022 and we have uncovered pricing. Here’s how much you can expect to pay, plus what has changed.

The current-shape Toyota RAV4 range has been given a shuffle with the lower specced GX models falling away and the introduction of further top-spec VX grades. With the shift in strategy, this has meant the price entry to the RAV4 range has increased.

Interestingly, there’s now a gap between the top-spec Toyota Corolla Cross at R450k and the entry-level RAV4 at R606k. Could there be place for another model in there? Or will we see the Corolla Cross range expand further? We do know that a Corolla Cross GR Sport is on the way…

With this pricing structure, we also see the RAV4 move into Fortuner territory, which begs the question, how much offroading do you plan to do and how many seats do you need?

Engines and Gearboxes

There are three engines on offer. Kicking off the range is a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder with 127 kW and 203 Nm, and this is paired to a CVT. If you’re wanting more power, the 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder has outputs of 152 kW and 243 Nm, and that comes with an automatic gearbox.

Finally, there’s a hybrid offered, which summons 131 kW and 221 Nm from a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder. There’s also an electric motor in the mix, bringing total power to 163 kW. This model features a CVT and is said to consume just 4.8 L/100 km.

The 2.0 has a claimed fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100 km (6.7 L/100 km for the all-wheel-drive model) while the 2.5 is a touch thirstier at 7.3 L/100 km.

DRIVEN | Toyota revises Rav4 SUV line-up, adds two new hybrid models in SA

Toyota updated its Rav4 line-up in South Africa and added two hybrid models.

Among the changes is the omittance of the GX model and the GX-R now acting as the entry to the range.

Both hybrid models are fitted with Toyota's all-wheel-drive system.

In summary

TSAM is on a hybrid offensive and will be flooding the market with several options from the Toyota and Lexus brands in the coming months and years. The hybrid offensive got off to a stellar start in 2021 with the introduction of several of these models from the Toyota stable, adding to the offering in the Lexus' stable.

The Rav4 may not be among the more affordable hybrids in South Africa anymore, but the line-up is one of the most popular SUVs in the country. And given our compatriots' favour towards the Rav4 and the increased uptake of hybrid models, we do not doubt that the updated range will again be a monumental success.

All Rav4 models are sold with a six-services or 90 000km service plan and a three-year or 100 000km warranty. Hybrid customers have the additional peace of mind of an eight-year or 195 000km Hybrid battery warranty.

Summary

In the South African context, EV ownership is still a foreign concept for many consumers. But, there is evidence that a growing number of buyers are happy to “catch the petrol-electric train” despite the fact that non-electrified versions are comparatively more affordable… Consider that 1.8 Hybrid derivatives have made up about half of Corolla Cross sales so far and, while limited stock availability may have played a role in that statistic, even if some buyers are indifferent to hybrids, they’re not averse to the technology. In many markets, hybrid derivatives of crossover models are in very high demand indeed!

If you’re self-disciplined and always feather the accelerator pedal, coast to stop signs (or red traffic lights) and use the brake pedal very sparingly, a petrol-electric hybrid will reward you with notably better fuel consumption than what you’d achieve in a non-electrified derivative with a similar engine displacement. With every fuel-price hike, the 2.5 Hybrid E-Four in eye-catching GX-R trim becomes an even more attractive option… It’s just a pity, though, that due to the discontinuation of the GX 2.5 Hybrid (which retailed for R560 900), the entry point to petrol-electric RAV4 ownership has risen to R644 100.

DRIVEN: 2022 Toyota RAV4 is positioned as a more premium option

The RAV4 has been with us for a long time and with the launch of the Toyota Corolla Cross saw buyers head off towards that option and it will be interesting to see how the introduction of the two hybrid models affects sales, keeping in mind that the Toyota RAV4 is essentially a more premium option.

It comes with a six-services or 90 000km service plan with service Intervals pegged at 15 000km/12-months and a three-year/100 000km warranty. Hybrid customers get an additional eight-year/195 000km Hybrid battery warranty.

Toyota RAV4 Adventure 2022 UK review

Should I buy one?

And that price seems rather steep today. When this generation of RAV4 was launched in 2018, it was the only hybrid SUV in its class, but the hybrid versions of the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are cheaper and generally feel more modern, while the mild-hybrid Nissan Qashqai gets close to the Toyota’s mpg, with a full hybrid on the way.

Lower trims offer better value, but are still pricy.
