Four pipes? Toyota RAV4 handed an aggressive design makeover

Russian tuner Khann has revealed a dramatic body kit for the Toyota RAV4, replacing a number of the exterior panels and upgrading the crossover to four pipes.

At the front, the new HRS Sport package for the RAV4 adds an aggressive bumper and grille design. The LED foglamps, which are integrated into the bumper, are an optional extra.

Toyota RAV4 Black Edition Announced

Toyota UK has revealed a special edition RAV4 and it looks fantastic.

When the latest generation Toyota RAV4 was revealed, many (including us) were impressed with its rugged new looks. Now, Toyota UK has revealed the RAV4 Black Edition, which makes the most of those looks and takes it up a level.

The new Toyota RAV4 Black Edition features striking black finishes, both inside and out. The body work is in a Galaxy Black hue and that colour has been applied to the front grille, lower grille, bumpers, skid plates, rear bumper and spoiler. There are some tasteful 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels rounding off the exterior package.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

The new Toyota RAV4 Plug-in takes its place at the pinnacle of the RAV4 range and as the flagship of Toyota's hybrid model line-up. It is a vehicle that delivers an unmatched combination of power and environmental efficiency in its class.

Its introduction strengthens and extends the appeal of the RAV4, the model which created the market for recreational SUVs and which has amassed more than 10 million worldwide sales.

Toyota has applied its leading hybrid technology expertise to create the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in, producing a vehicle that is not only powerful, but which also outperforms all its rivals in terms of low emissions and fuel economy. The model's final homologation data indicates 22 g/m CO2 and 1.0 l/100km (Combined WLTP cycle).

RAV4 operates as an authentic electric vehicle: EV running is its default mode, in which it can cover around up to 98 km in urban driving (City WLTP cycle) on a full battery charge, comfortably more than the average European daily commute, and reach speeds of 135 km/h, with no intervention from the hybrid powertrain.

When extra engine power is needed, the capability of the 2.5-litre Dynamic Force powerplant ensures efficiency remains class-leading. Battery charging is simple and safe, and can be accomplished in 2.5 hours using a 230 V/32 A connection. As standard, owners can use the MyT app to schedule and monitor battery charging remotely and also operate the air conditioning system to warm up or cool the cabin before setting off.

Toyota RAV4 - Now with Offroad Package

Toyota Japan has quietly introduced the Offroad Package trim for the RAV4.

We've suspected the 5th-generation Toyota RAV4 is adept at the offroad stuff and our past experience with the GX-R all-wheel-drive version proved it was a lot more capable than previously thought. We did a river crossing as well as some steep gravel climbs and the RAV4 never skipped a beat.

Confirming our suspicions of offroad credibility is the announcement that Toyota has released an Adventure Offroad Package for the Japanese market RAV4. Visually, the changes aren't blatant, with a special edition matte-black 18-inch alloy wheel wrapped in all-terrain rubber and some proper roof rails. Inside, there are synthetic leather seats with red stitching and subtle badging on the dashboard.

Mitsuoka Buddy transforms Toyota RAV4 into iconic American SUV!

Mitsuoka has been producing quirky automotive creations for a good few decades. Its latest creation, which it calls the Buddy, is no exception. Using the Toyota RAV4 as a base, the crossover has been penned to resemble iconic American SUVs of the 1990s.

At the front, the Buddy has been kitted out with a large chrome grille which houses the rectangular headlamps and LED DRLs. This is complemented by a retro chrome bumper and redesigned bonnet. LED foglamps slot in just beneath the bumper design.

The profile appears more familiar as it retains the RAV4’s wheel arches, side skirts, doors and pillars. Steel wheels with a chrome cover are added to accentuate the retro theme and are mated to a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tyres.

225 kW (not-for-SA) Toyota RAV4 flagship falls short in ‘Moose Test’

Europe’s Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid flagship derivative has registered a “poor” rating in Swedish motoring magazine Teknikens Värld’s dreaded “Moose Test”.

The top-spec version of the RAV4 offered in Europe, which is also sold in North America as the RAV4 Prime, employs the Japanese firm’s latest hybrid system, comprising a 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor on each axle and a lithium-ion battery. The result is a peak power output of 225 kW.

It’s worth noting, however, that this model is not available in South Africa, with Toyota SA Motors telling us in June 2020 it is not in “our immediate future”.

In 2019, the standard RAV4 hybrid also struggled in the Swedish magazine’s test (as well as Spanish publication km77's version), before Toyota updated the vehicle’s electronic stability control system, allowing the SUV to pass the evaluation.

Should I buy one?

The only snag is the price. It starts at £47,395, so it’s a natch more expensive than the excellent plug-in Land Rover Discovery Sport that toppled rivals from BMW and Volvo in an Autocar group test recently. It’s also a few grand pricier than the new Suzuki Across, which is effectively the exact same car only with a different badge on its nose.

Standard equipment is nonetheless generous, but it doesn’t have the premium allure of those upper-class competitors - despite feeling exceptionally well-built. Nevertheless, this is an easily recommendable PHEV SUV - provided you’re into such things.
