The Toyota RAV4 Thread

Toyota RAV4-based double-cab bakkie in the works?

Toyota has hinted at the possibility of producing a new more compact bakkie. Could a RAV4-based double-cab be in the works?

In an interview with Automotive News, Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, said the Japanese automotive giant is looking into producing a more compact bakkie…and it could be based on the RAV4. Indeed, Ogawa told Automotive News that a RAV4 bakkie is an opportunity for the brand.

If a RAV4-based double-cab, which has been rendered by digital artist Theottle, does make it into production, we expect that it will share the SUV’s 1 855 mm width, with the length and wheelbase – measuring 4 600 and 2 690 mm, respectively – likely stretched to accommodate a load bed.

New Toyota RAV4 launches in South Africa: pricing

The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is being launched in South Africa this week, with a hybrid-heavy range underlying the company’s push to make new energy vehicles more prominent on local roads.

Priced from R770,500, the new RAV4 is available in GX, VX and GR-S specification grades.

Range and Pricing:

2.5 HEV GX: R770,500
2.0 VX: R799,900
2.5 HEV VX: R927,800
2.5 HEV GR-S: R941,800

Three of the four available models are powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 176kW and claimed fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km.

Customers can also opt for the more traditional 2.0-litre normally aspirated petrol engine, which delivers 127kW and 203Nm. This engine is available exclusively with the VX trim level.

Standard features on the GX include climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, light sensor, front and rear park distance control, reverse camera, seven airbags and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The VX and GR-S add a raft of additional features, including leather upholstery, heated seats, electric tailgate, head-up display and driver assistance gadgets such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor and lane-keep assist, among others. Further to that, the GR-S gains unique exterior styling elements and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Externally, the sixth-generation RAV4 receives a more muscular look with chunkier proportions, more pronounced creases and ‘hammerhead shark’ face.
