The Toyota RAV4 Thread

Toyota RAV4-based double-cab bakkie in the works?

Toyota has hinted at the possibility of producing a new more compact bakkie. Could a RAV4-based double-cab be in the works?

In an interview with Automotive News, Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, said the Japanese automotive giant is looking into producing a more compact bakkie…and it could be based on the RAV4. Indeed, Ogawa told Automotive News that a RAV4 bakkie is an opportunity for the brand.

If a RAV4-based double-cab, which has been rendered by digital artist Theottle, does make it into production, we expect that it will share the SUV’s 1 855 mm width, with the length and wheelbase – measuring 4 600 and 2 690 mm, respectively – likely stretched to accommodate a load bed.

New Toyota RAV4 launches in South Africa: pricing

The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is being launched in South Africa this week, with a hybrid-heavy range underlying the company’s push to make new energy vehicles more prominent on local roads.

Priced from R770,500, the new RAV4 is available in GX, VX and GR-S specification grades.

Range and Pricing:

2.5 HEV GX: R770,500
2.0 VX: R799,900
2.5 HEV VX: R927,800
2.5 HEV GR-S: R941,800

Three of the four available models are powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 176kW and claimed fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km.

Customers can also opt for the more traditional 2.0-litre normally aspirated petrol engine, which delivers 127kW and 203Nm. This engine is available exclusively with the VX trim level.

Standard features on the GX include climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, light sensor, front and rear park distance control, reverse camera, seven airbags and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The VX and GR-S add a raft of additional features, including leather upholstery, heated seats, electric tailgate, head-up display and driver assistance gadgets such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor and lane-keep assist, among others. Further to that, the GR-S gains unique exterior styling elements and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Externally, the sixth-generation RAV4 receives a more muscular look with chunkier proportions, more pronounced creases and ‘hammerhead shark’ face.

Launch drive: New Toyota RAV4 lands with edgy new look, digitised cabin and more hybrid models

The GR-S gains the aforementioned exterior styling enhancements, along with racier cabin appointments, including sports seats with red contrast stitching, alloy pedals and other exclusive trim details.

The sweet spot for us? That would still be the 2.5 HEV VX model, thanks to its combination of luxury, refinement, comfort and economy.

The new RAV4 will certainly strike the right chord with many buyers in this segment, thanks to its edgier design, new hybrid powertrains and refined road manners. But as much as it impresses with its overall quality, the range has become somewhat expensive, and the new wave of Chinese entrants to the market means there are almost endless options for customers seeking a lower-priced alternative, albeit without Toyota's rock-solid reputation.

Toyota RAV4 debuts in SA with hybrid, plug-in power and GR-S variant

Toyota RAV4 has entered a new generation in South Africa, with Toyota South Africa Motors introducing a model that combines electrified performance, upgraded safety systems and a fully modernised design.

The SUV, which helped pioneer the global crossover segment more than three decades ago, has been reimagined with a stronger design identity, improved aerodynamics and a more connected driving experience. Toyota says the new model is its most advanced, versatile and connected RAV4 to date.

Built on the theme “Discover Every Horizon”, the new RAV4 is designed for both urban use and long-distance travel, offering increased practicality, comfort and capability.

Expanded electrified range

For the first time, South African buyers will have access to petrol, hybrid, performance hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives.

The range includes a 2.0-litre petrol engine, a 2.5-litre hybrid system and a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model delivering up to 225 kW. The PHEV also offers an electric driving range of up to 142 km under test conditions.

The hybrid system features a new lithium-ion battery for improved efficiency, smoother performance and reduced weight, while the PHEV introduces a larger 25.4 kWh battery with fast-charging capability.

Design and practicality

The new RAV4 adopts Toyota’s “SUV Toughness Meets Urban Sophistication” design approach, featuring a bold front fascia, sharp LED lighting and a more aerodynamic profile.

Cargo space has been increased, while new alloy wheel designs and a wider colour palette — including bi-tone options — add more customisation choices.

Toyota RAV4 (2026) Launch Review

How much does the new Toyota RAV4 cost in South Africa?

Every RAV4 comes with a 6-service/90 000 km service plan as well as a 3-year/100 000 km warranty. EV battery coverage spans 8 years/160 000 km, and customers can increase both the warranty and service plan durations through dealers.

Final thoughts

Toyota South Africa is well aware that it has its back against the wall in the face of more affordable offerings – think Haval H6 and Jetour T2 – which explains the multi-faceted approach in trying to cover all bases with conventional, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

In comparison to the outgoing model, the price difference isn’t too radical. Comparing like for like – for example, the RAV4 2.5 HEV VX – the 5th-generation model retailed for R834 300 and the newcomer is positioned at R927 800. That’s an increase of 11.2% for a replacement model that’s much better specced and more polished.

This new RAV4 addresses all the criticisms of the previous generation, adds a touch more value and brings the range into the modern era with a carefully thought-out package. Paired with punchy yet efficient engines and impeccable refinement, and it’s game on!
