Marjah, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Twelve Afghan civilians were killed Sunday when two rockets fired by coalition forces in southern Afghanistan missed their intended target, as the Taliban showed stiff resistance to the NATO assault against the militant group.

"We deeply regret this tragic loss of life," U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said in a statement. "The current operation in Central Helmand is aimed at restoring security and stability to this vital area of Afghanistan. It's regrettable that in the course of our joint efforts, innocent lives were lost."

Coalition forces fired two rockets with the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) at insurgents firing upon Afghan and ISAF forces, but they struck about 300 meters off their intended target, ISAF said.

How do they miss by 300m? Must be some dumb people running the show to miss by that much

It is the US though so of course it is all good mean while the whole world is shocked by a bomb blast in india.

The point of the war was not to kill the same amount of people as they lost. The point was to catch bin laden (who I think is already dead) and if anyone got in the way of that goal (ie taliban) they would have to be destroyed.

The killing of innocent people is regretable, not fine. However, if you are a suicide bomber, or the nut job behind the mentally feeble, the killing of innocents is the point. Time for a party and all that.

Yeah level playing between NATO who are there to help the Afghans and the Taliban who want to send them back to the dark ages. The sheer stupidity of some people *facepalm*

It's all collateral damage. No difference. IN a war zone.

It all has to do with intent. In war there are unintended casualties. I am pretty sure the US will compensate these families as best they can. Yes it is sad and unfortunate, but a very different ball game to the suicide bombers who intend to kill civilians and cause the maximum amount of terror and loss. I've never heard of anybody being compensated by the terrorists because a suicide bomber blew the stuffing out of their family member. And anybody who cannot tell the difference between the two is a mentally deficient idiot.
