The Virtual Machine Thread

Posting from WinXP VM... :D

does not feel any speed difference... :)

gonna install some games and see what happens :D

Dude good luck but playing games under a virtual system is what you would call mad. Anything that requires 3d will lag as hell or not run.. (Unless you do some fancy hacking)

buggrit issue with getting the soundcard driver...

driver is an Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio

I will post a linky once I have sourced the driver for people's benefit :)

/me loves this!

can now pop in for something on XP without having to reboot... :D

question - if you have two XP installs on your HDD, one a virtual machine, and the other a straightforward install, is that two licences or not? Keep in mind that you won't run the virtual XP on the XP host - only on the ubuntu host.

Those of you who will want to install OS/2 will be happy to know that the disk images are already compatible with virtualbox.

Just add them and mount them as needed - no conversion needed.

WinXP works beautifully.

Once the display driver is loaded, you can resize the window dynamically (when running it windowed on the host OS), and when you switch to fullscreen, it automatically resizes the window to fullscreen.

As for WinME - I don't want to go there...

Try Seamless mode (host+L). I have gnome menu across the top of my screen and windows menubar acoss the bottom, and various ubuntu and windows windows across the desktop. :)

Has anyone tried to run ReactOS inside a VM? I've tried and got an older version to run ok under Vbox, but the OS itself is obviously still growing and maturing.

I really like the idea that you can build a virtual network inside Vbox, this will let me do exam practice for MCSE without needing 2 or 3 real computers. :)

I tried to run ReactOS, but it keeps coming up with the time zone stuff every time I reboot... so I just deleted it.

And FreeDOS won't go with the networking :(

As for virtual networks and studies, a VM network is a great learning tool to get things done without having more than one physical computer :D

Just make sure you've got enough physical RAM... ;)

Librarian - How did running those games go? And what are your PC specs?

Yup, got my VmWare Server running. I've used Virtual Box and MS Virtual Machine, but have found them often crashes my virtual O/S. Been with VMWare for around 5 years now (even before it was free :) )

I find as soon as I've got the Virtual Tools installed my virtual O/S speeds up drasticly (especially the graphics). But, by no means could one play a 3D game through their Virtual Machine.

VirtualBox 1.6 is out, looks like some good features are included.
I will download it when I can, and give it a spin. Should hopefully be well worth it.

I hope that now that Sun owns them, the pace of improvements and so on increases and that they add new features often.

yayzors!!!

managed to get virtualbox to connect physically to the LAN

can now host a server on XP with its own, unique IP addy obtainable from the LAN DHCP server :D

Above is also possible with a static IP :)

So you can run a virtual server with a static IP as well within virtualbox
