Volkswagen kicks off production of 190 kW Amarok V6

Volkswagen has commenced production of the most powerful version of its Amarok bakkie yet, which boasts a V6 churning out 190 kW (up from the previous high of 165 kW).

The Wolfsburg-based brand has announced that the new high-output model, which makes 190 kW and 580 N.m courtesy of its 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart (and 200 kW on overboost “for short periods”), has started rolling off the line at the main Hannover plant in Germany.

The new engine specification will be offered in Highline and Aventura guises, with 190 kW versions of the Amarok also gaining new “visual elements” such as a black roof liner, fresh 20-inch alloy wheel designs and the availability of a new metallic Peacock Green paintwork.

Permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox will be offered as standard on the Amarok with this new top-spec engine, both on Highline and Aventura derivatives.

In the case of the Aventura, the pillar trim and “other roof elements” are finished in titanium black, a colour repeated on the Nappa leather upholstery in the cabin. The Amarok Aventura furthermore runs on new 20-inch “Talca” wheels finished in dark graphite with a high-gloss surface.

While the first examples of the 190 kW version of the Amarok will be made available in Germany from mid-June, Volkswagen South Africa told us in April that it planned to bring this new high-output V6 to local shores at some point in 2019, although trim levels (and, naturally, pricing) have yet to be confirmed.

Next VW Amarok could share platform with Ford Ranger

Volkswagen and Ford are exploring the prospect of a strategic alliance that would involve collaborating on several joint projects.

Among these, says VW, would be the “joint development of a range of commercial vehicles to better serve the evolving needs on customers globally”.

Details are thin on the ground at this stage, but such an alliance could certainly have implications in the bakkie world.

Assuming that work on the next-generation Amarok is not already at too advanced a stage, it could certainly make sense, from a cost perspective, to twin it with the next-generation Ford Ranger.

Much like the current Mazda BT-50, the Amarok would likely share its basic structure with the Ranger, but sporting different styling and a redesigned cabin. Incidentally, the BT-50’s replacement will be based on Isuzu’s next KB, in a deal struck after the Ford-Mazda divorce.

Could a VW-Ford deal also result in the German carmaker getting its own version of the larger F150 pick-up? This is possibly more of a long shot, given that VW is expected to tackle the full-sized pick-up market in the US with a unibody vehicle inspired by the Tanoak conce

While VW could turn to Ford for help with its bakkies, the German carmaker could help Ford to strengthen its position in a sector that it already leads - namely vans. Hence don’t be surprised to see a new range of Transits somewhere down the line based on VW’s Caddy, T5 and Crafter models.

Although the “strategic alliance” will almost certainly involve platform and technology sharing, there will not be any equity sharing between the companies.

“This potential alliance with the Volkswagen Group is another example of how we can become more fit as a business, while creating a winning global product portfolio and extending our capabilities,” said Ford’s president of global markets, Jim Farley.

“We look forward to exploring with the Volkswagen team in the days ahead how we might work together to better serve the evolving needs of commercial vehicle customers – and much more.”

VW’s group strategy head Dr. Thomas Sedran added: “Markets and customer demand are changing at an incredible speed. Both companies have strong and complementary positions in different commercial vehicle segments already.”

2018 Ford Ranger vs Mercedes-Benz X-Class vs VW Amarok comparison test - Motoring Australia

VW exec says Amarok V6’s power war with X-Class is over

A Volkswagen executive in Australia says that there are no plans to hike the Amarok V6’s output again, effectively ending the double-cab bakkie’s power war with the six-cylinder version of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

Earlier in 2018, the Wolfsburg-based brand announced a new high-output model, which generates 190 kW and 580 N.m courtesy of its 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart (and 200 kW on overboost “for short periods”). This, of course, puts it a nose ahead of the X350d, which makes 190 kW (sans overboost) and 30 N.m fewer than the VW bakkie, at 550 N.m.

Speaking to GoAuto, Carlos Santos, who holds the position of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia director, said that 190 kW was enough.

“I think that’s probably the top [output]; I don’t see us going any bigger in engine, particularly not in terms of displacement or cylinder count. It’s just not in Volkswagen’s way moving forward,” Santos told the Australian publication.

“The engine is capable of more power as it is in different variants of other [Volkswagen] Group products we make; it’s pretty much the same engine. But at the moment, there’s nothing on the nearby agenda to make it more powerful,” he added.

Volkswagen South Africa earlier told CARmag.co.za that it planned to bring this new high-output V6 to local shores at some point in 2019, although trim levels (and, naturally, pricing) have yet to be confirmed.

VW Amarok handed extreme makeover (inside and out)

The folks over at Carlex Design seem to quite enjoy kitting out double-cab bakkies, having given many a pick-up an extreme exterior makeover and a plush cabin. And, despite already offering a conversion for the Volkswagen Amarok, the Poland-based firm has now released a slightly different option.

Just 500 units will be produced, each bearing a 13-piece body kit, mud-flaps and an individually numbered plaque.

The add-on parts – which include bumpers (fore and aft), chunky wheelarch extensions and a bonnet guard – have all been coated in special protective paint. The kit furthermore includes bold body decals and 18-inch alloys wrapped in 265/60 BF Goodrich All Terrain rubber.

Inside, you’ll find swathes of Nappa leather, decorated with “unique seams and quilting patterns”. A new steering wheel, wrapped in a mix of conventional and perforated leather, is also included, along with fresh floor mats.

And what if you want to give the Amarok’s 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart a fresh soundtrack? Well, on the list of options (which also includes a Pedders suspension lift kit and roof-mounted lights), you’ll find a custom exhaust system equipped with Maxhaust’s sound booster, which the firm promises will give the bakkie “a true rally character”.

The price for the conversion (sans extras)? Some €13 995 (that’s about R230 000)…

Next-gen VW Amarok to be based on Ford Ranger – report

Since the Volkswagen Group and Ford announced plans to enter “a strategic alliance” back in June 2018, there has been plenty of speculation regarding the possibility that the next-generation versions of the Amarok and Ranger bakkies could share a platform.

Now a fresh report out of Europe suggests that VW is eager to save development costs on its second-generation Amarok by basing it on the Ranger, since the former is currently the only body-on-frame vehicle in the Wolfsburg-based automotive group’s line-up.

“Several” sources “familiar with the matter” told Automotive News Europe that Volkswagen was keen to base its next-gen Amarok on the Ranger platform, essentially following the lead set by Mercedes-Benz, which has built its X-Class on Nissan Navara underpinnings.

Thomas Sedran, the new CEO of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand, would not be drawn on the joint projects that the automakers had planned, but did tell Automotive News Europe that the alliance would see the two firms on equal footing.

“When we finalise this alliance, you can be assured it will be balanced. There is no junior, nor senior partner, but rather two companies at eye level that will closely co-operate with one another,” he said.

“There might be specific years where there will be a difference in production volumes, but in the sum total it is very balanced.”

“The product life cycles are a good match. We will build for them. They will build for us,” Sedran added.

Of course, a deal has yet to be officially signed, although Sedran is optimistic that it will happen before the end of 2018.

“We realised fairly quickly that it worked from a cultural perspective and there was the right chemistry with the main actors. At the end of the day, both sides need to sign, but I’m confident since it’s all been constructive and in a spirit of partnership.”

In August 2018, the head of Volkswagen Group Australia refused to rule out the possibility of the next Amarok and Ranger bakkies sharing architecture.

Looks beautiful... except for that steering wheel. OTT for a bakkie.

Volkswagen Amarok ‘Dark Label’ edition hits South Africa

Back in January 2018, Volkswagen revealed the special-edition Amarok Dark Label in the United Kingdom. And now a bakkie bearing the same name has quietly arrived in South Africa.

While the UK-spec model is powered by Wolfsburg’s 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel (tuned to deliver 150 kW and 500 N.m), the local version makes do with VW’s 2,0-litre BiTDI four-cylinder engine. That means it’s good for 132 kW and 420 N.m, sent to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

So, the price? Well, the Amarok Dark Label double-cab is priced at R674 600, which makes its some R38 000 more expensive than the Highline variant with the same powertrain.

From what we can tell, this special-edition model features darkened side-mirror caps, darkened exterior handles, model-specific 18-inch alloys (wrapped in 255/60 R18 rubber) and what appear to be automatic bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights. “Dark Label” body decals are also included.

Inside, you’ll find black floor mats (front and rear), partial-leather seat upholstery, Climatic air-conditioning and rain-sensing wipers.

Hopefully VW South Africa will release more details (including how many examples will be offered locally) about this special-edition bakkie soon…

Aussie Amarok ad mocks censorship, gets banned

Sydney - Authorities in certain countries can get quite grumpy, to say the least, about adverts that show cars unleashing their performance potential.

Anything that even remotely encourages spirited driving of any kind must be silenced at all cost, before every member of the public is suddenly and subliminally brainwashed into becoming a reckless driver, ultimately resulting in mayhem on the roads of an apocalyptic scale.

Volkswagen’s Australian division recently sought to poke fun at such modern sensitivities with an ad campaign for its Amarok V6, dubbed “too powerful for TV”.

The ad shows a film crew doing everything it can to try and skirt regulations while still hinting that its six-cylinder TDI double cab is powerful, capable and exciting to drive. They even resort to using a model car for some of the scenes.

However, the chaps at VW clearly didn’t do enough to silence the powers that be. According to CarAdvice, the Australian advertising standards board has banned the advert, following numerous complaints from the public.

Just a hint of irony there perhaps?

And yes, you can watch it below (at your own risk, of course).

This is what the advertising board had to say:

“Although the advertisement had fantastical elements, the depiction of the vehicle starting to overtake the road trains was a realistic scenario that would constitute unsafe and reckless driving.

"Further, the depiction of the driver choosing to leave the road and overtake both trucks on the shoulder of the road depicts driving which is reckless and would breach road rules.”
