The VW Amarok Thread

If you really need to go the Amarok route instead of KB, then V6 is the way to go.
I was dropped off in a v6 yesterday when I took the UP in for its service, it's a lot smoother than the 2 liter.

Volkswagen says Ford ‘will remain competitor’ despite alliance

Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess says Ford will remain its competitor despite ongoing talks with the Blue Oval brand about a strategic alliance.

Diess furthermore told the Detroit Free Press that a merger with Ford was “never” on the cards.

“We’re looking into common platforms that we have. Ford is very strong in the US; we are strong in other markets,” the 60-year-old told the US-based publication.

While the partnership will ostensibly lower costs for both firms and likely involve the sharing of platforms (with the next-generation Amarok possibly running on Ranger underpinnings, for example), Diess emphasised the brand would ” remain competitors”.

A statement on VW’s website, meanwhile, elaborated.

“The talks with Ford about an industrial co-operation announced earlier are progressing positively so far. The two companies complement each other very well in terms of both products and regions.

“The joint development and manufacture of a range of light commercial vehicles is at the core of the envisaged co-operation. Volkswagen expects significant synergy effects from the potential to lower costs or increase performance via scales.

“Ford and Volkswagen will nevertheless remain competitors, as the proposed co-operation does in no way concern commercial, marketing or pricing strategies. Additional fields of co-operation outside the light commercial vehicle segment with the potential for expanding collaboration have also been identified,” the statement said.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett, meanwhile, told Automotive News Europe the conversation with VW was “going better than we thought it would.”

“Herbert [Diess] and I had a great discussion,” Hackett said of talks regarding light commercial vehicles. He added, however, that expanding the partnership with VW would be a “delicate dance” since the two firms “compete in a bunch of areas as well”.

So now the next Amarok will be leaking oil on a regular basis...

Volkswagen Amarok ‘Dark Label’ officially joins SA range

Back in September 2018, we broke the news that the Volkswagen Amarok Dark Label had been quietly added to the Wolfsburg-based brand’s local range. Now VW SA has released additional details of this new special edition.

As we pointed out at the time, the new derivative is powered by the German automaker’s 2,0 BiTDi engine (rather than the V6 used in the UK version), which sends its 132 kW and 420 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Priced at R674 600, the Dark Label model ships standard with VW’s three-year/100 000 km warranty and five-year/90 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km).

The Amarok Dark Label sets itself apart from the rest of the local Amarok range thanks to its locally sourced matte black styling bar (complete with “Amarok” lettering) as well as the matte black treatment applied to items such as the exterior door handles, side-mirror caps and side-sills.

In addition, the rear windows are tinted and the B-pillars blacked out, while “Dark Label” decals run along the flanks. Smoked taillamps and new 18-inch “Rawson” alloy wheels complete the exterior makeover.

Inside, you’ll find what VW describes as black “Greenhouse” headlining, Vienna leather seats, new air-vent trim and floor mats embroidered with “Dark Label” lettering.

Standard features include bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, front and rear park distance control, tyre-pressure monitoring, the “Plus” multi-function on-board computer and the “Composition Media” infotainment system.

Interestingly, VW SA says the Amarok Dark Label can be optionally fitted with items such as seat heating, heavy duty suspension, a rear-view camera, “Climatronic” air-conditioning, the “Discover Media” infotainment system (with sat-nav) and rubber floor covering.

Volkswagen Amarok Dark Label in SA

Volkswagen is offering a special edition Amarok Dark Label in South Africa. See details below…

The Amarok Dark Label features a locally-sourced MAXE matte black styling bar with ‘Amarok’ lettering while the door handles and side mirrors are finished in matte black. The front protection grille is also finished in matte black with dark chrome lacquered ledges. The look is further emphasised with dark-tinted rear windows and blacked-out B-pillars and black side sills. The taillights are smoked and ‘Dark Label’ decals are seen on the side of the vehicle. The Amarok Dark Label rides on new 18-inch Rawson alloy wheels.

On the inside, the Amarok Dark Label features a black ‘Greenhouse’ headlining, Vienna leather seats and silk glance chrome air vent surrounds while the floor mats feature ‘Dark Label’ lettering.

Standard features include bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, front and rear park distance control, tyre pressure monitor, Composition Media infotainment system with app-connect and voice control, multifunction steering wheel and onboard computer.

Optional features for the Amarok Dark Label include seat heating, heavy duty suspension, rear view camera, climate control air-conditioning, Discover Media infotainment system and rubber flooring for the cab and passenger compartment.

The Amarok Dark Label Edition is powered by a 2.0-litre bi-turbodiesel engine with 132 kW and 420 Nm and is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission directing power to all 4 wheels via a permanent 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Fuel consumption is claimed at 8.5 L/100km.

Dark Label is VWSA's new Amarok edition

Black is the new black in South Africa’s bakkie world, this year having seen its fair share of special edition double cabs sporting darkened trim, and the latest to join the dark side is Volkswagen’s Amarok.

The new Amarok Dark Label special edition is now on sale in South Africa for R674 600, available exclusively with the combination of VW’s 132kW/420Nm 2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion permanent four-wheel-drive.

So what sets it apart?

The Dark Label rolls on 18-inch ‘Rawson’ alloy wheels and gets a South African made Maxe styling bar in matte black, with that colour treatment now also applying to the mirrors, door handles and front protection grille.

The edition also gets ‘Dark Label’ door stickers, smoked tail lights, black side sills and tinted rear windows.

Black ‘Greenhouse’ headlining and embroidered ‘Dark Label’ floor mats keep the theme running on the inside, which is also kitted out with Vienna leather seats and a Composition Media infotainment system with app-connect. A three-year/100 000km warranty and five-year/90 000km service plan is part of the deal too.

You will however have to attack the options list if you want automatic climate control, heated seats or the ‘Discover Media’ infotainment system with satnav. Customers can also order heavy duty suspension that increases the GVM, albeit at the expense of ride quality.

The edition's list price of R674 600 represents a R35 000 premium over the equivalent 20 BiTDI Highline 4Motion auto model. At this stage, the Dark Label is not available with the V6 TDI engine.

How many Amaroks VW has sold in the first 11 months of 2018

Throughout 2018, the Volkswagen Amarok has featured in the bottom half of our monthly lists of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies, playing second fiddle to more affordable rivals (such as the ever-popular Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger) that boast more varied local line-ups. That got us thinking: just how popular is the German bakkie globally?

Well, Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle division says it delivered more vehicles in the first eleven months of 2018 than it did in total in 2017. And, of the 455 800 units registered globally from January to November, some 74 400 vehicles were from the Amarok line (representing a year-on-year increase of 2,7 percent).

And in South Africa? Well, a spot of rudimentary maths reveals VW SA registered 2 649 examples the bakkie (which, it should be noted, is offered locally in double-cab form only) from the start of 2018 until the end of November. For context, that’s the sort of figure often matched by the aforementioned Ranger and routinely exceeded by the Hilux on a monthly basis.

Now, if only Mercedes-Benz SA would report X-Class sales data to Naamsa…

Interestingly, Volkswagen’s commercial arm recorded a significant delivery increase in Africa, growing sales by some 21 percent to around 16 900 vehicles. South America (up 7,9 percent to 41 200 units) and the Asia-Pacific region (up 2,1 percent to 24 300 units) also experienced strong growth.

Globally in the first eleven months of the year, the Transporter line was the most popular (184 100 units), while the Caddy range weighed in with 145 100 units and the Crafter line-up with 52 200 units.

Volkswagen Amarok V6 gets the Arctic Trucks treatment!

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off a one-off Amarok V6 built with help from off-road specialists Arctic Trucks.

Created in Iceland in partnership with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles dealer Hekla, the Amarok AT35 is being used as a support vehicle for winter driving experiences.

The special bakkie gains a 25 mm front and rear suspension lift, as well as flared fibre-glass wheelarches, bigger wheels, the obligatory 315/70 R17 all-terrain tyres and larger mud flaps front and rear.

Inside, the Amarok features a fire extinguisher, a portable generator and – somewhat bizarrely – a cappuccino machine. A VHF radio, toolbox, jack, first-aid kit (with defibrillator) and work light are also included in the Arctic Trucks conversion.

Under the bonnet you’ll find the standard 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, churning out an unchanged 165 kW and 550 N.m, and mated to all four corners via the Wolfsburg-based brand’s familiar eight-speed automatic transmission.

VW says the AT35 retains the standard Amarok’s 45-degree climbing ability, a payload of 1 154 kg and its hill descent assist function.

“The Volkswagen Amarok has been a massive hit since its introduction and we’re delighted to see it proving its worth in some of the toughest conditions in the world,” said Nick Axtell, specialist sales manager for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK.

i don't think that look suits the amarok, the hilux did they look better.

Volkswagen Amarok Aventura 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Only if you simply must have that upgraded exterior look, or your local dealer offers it up with a seriously good deal.

Put simply, it’s not enough of an upgrade over the standard Amarok to warrant the price. If it’s a luxury truck you want, an X-Class is a more convincing proposition for the money. If you’re more comfortable with the VW’s utility focus, Highline spec gets everything you need for a price nearer £40k.

That’s not to take away from the fact that this is a very accomplished vehicle, both utterly useable as a family car and capable as a workhorse. It’s just a little out of its comfort zone at this price.

Volkswagen Amarok V6 transformed into off-road 'beast'

Think the Volkswagen Amarok V6 could do with some added off-road ability? Well, German tuner delta4x4 has released a new package for the double-cab bakkie, handing it a serious suspension lift kit.

Indeed, this “Beast” conversion sees the Amarok’s overall height hiked by around 250 mm, while also adding some 200 mm in width (the latter courtesy of wider wheels and fenders).

The German firm achieves this with a body lift kit (adding 100 mm of ground clearance) as well as a "suspension distance kit" comprising uprated springs and four Bilstein shock absorbers (adding an extra 40 mm).

The off-road-ready Amarok furthermore gains a set of "KlassikB" wheels (complete with “Icelandic-style” covers) wrapped in 35-inch Cooper rubber, adding some 100 mm to its height. Alloys shod in slightly smaller (33-inch) Yokohama tyres are also offered.

DRIVEN: Volkswagen Amarok 3,0 TDI V6 4Motion AT Highline (off road)

Conclusion

The Amarok can handle the rough stuff, full stop. Hardebaard 4x4 owners may sneer at the VW as it makes off-road driving a cinch and requires less driver skill than most other double-cab bakkies. But it's unfair to criticise a product for overachievement. There is the issue of price, though, as the range starts at R727 800 and tops out at R818 200 for the Extreme version. But after spending two days with the V6 in the bush, I'd say it's worth every last cent...

Pricing! Volkswagen Amarok Canyon V6 confirmed for SA

A new V6-powered, Volkswagen Amarok Canyon special-edition variant is set to join VW South Africa’s range in the near future, slotting in just below the Highline Plus and flagship Extreme derivatives.

Powered by the same 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel – offering an unchanged 165 kW and 550 N.m, and linked to all four corners by an eight-speed automatic transmission – the Amarok Canyon will be priced at R791 100, some R38 100 less than the V6-badged Extreme (and R2 700 less than the Highline Plus with the same engine).

So, what sets the special-edition Amarok Canyon apart from lesser models? Well, it runs on 17-inch “Aragua” alloys (complete with anti-theft wheel bolts) and features a chunky styling bar over the load bay as well as “Canyon” decals running along its flanks (plus extra badging at the rear).

Somewhat curiously, the images you see here (from VW SA’s configurator) show the Amarok Canyon wearing black wheelarch-cladding up front only, with the rear items left in body colour...
