Volkswagen South Africa told to pull ‘sexist’ advert for Amarok V6 bakkie

The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has called on Volkswagen South Africa to withdraw a radio advertisement for the Amarok V6 after a complaint branded it “extremely sexist”.

Professor Susan Goldstein lodged the complaint with directorate of the ARB, submitting that the commercial (which was aired on 702) represented “gender stereotyping” and was “harmful” in a local environment of “toxic masculinity and among the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world”.

The radio advert depicts a man shopping for shoes with his female partner, with the voiceover stating the following:

“It’s dusk and you’re in unfamiliar territory, surrounded by predators hunting for fresh prey. And they found it. 50 percent off all shoes. They attack, lunging mercilessly. As you guard the 12 shopping bags, seated on a bench alongside the other men, you watch the feeding frenzy take place. This is Shoe Sale Country and you don't belong here, man. This is not your habitat, so go where you belong in the V6 Amarok. Visit your Volkswagen dealership for great Amarok V6 offers today, man.”

I'm just saying if you want to stick a half-a-million rand price tag on a bakkie I want V8 and lots of speed.

Nowadays that's the entry level bakkie price. Even for the hilux.

Key Differences: 2019 Volkswagen Amarok Canyon

Summary

We're big fans of the Volkswagen Amarok with its potent V6 engine. Not only does it deliver stellar performance, but the way it drives is impressive for a body-on-frame double-cab bakkie. Interior fittings are of a good quality and standard specification at this price point is good. We also had the chance to drive the Amarok Canyon in some soft sand for these photos and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system barely broke a sweat. The Volkswagen Amarok V6 is a finalist in the #CarsAwards - powered by WesBank.

Volkswagen releases global sales figures for Amarok bakkie for 2019

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles says it delivered nearly 500 000 light commercial vehicles to customers across the world in the 2019, representing a year-on-year fall of 1,6 percent.

So, how many of those came in the shape of the Amarok? Well, VW says some 72 513units of the bakkie were sold worldwide in 2019 (which works out to a year-on-year decline of 10,4 percent).

And in South Africa? Well, a spot of rudimentary maths reveals VW SA registered 2 596 examples the Amarok – which, it should be noted, is offered locally in double-cab form only – over the year. That’s down on the 2 972 units sold in South Africa in 2018.

Amarok 580S is VW's 200kW Double-Cab Monster

Volkswagen has revealed a new variant of its Amarok double-cab, packing 200 kW.

Set for its global debut in the Australian market by May, this new bakkie is VW’s Amarok 580S. In terms of position, it sits between the Highline Black and Ultimate V6 Amaroks.

The naming convention for VW’s latest special edition bakkie is quite easy to understand, with ‘580’ referring to the engine’s peak torque output.

Powering these Amarok 580S special edition bakkies are the 2020 version of VW’s 3-litre V6 turbodiesel, tuned for a potency of 190 kW and 580 Nm. For short bursts of peak throttle loading, the engine will overboost to a power number of 200 kW.

Volkswagen Amarok V6: 190 kW variant finally heading to South Africa

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed it plans to launch the full-fat 190 kW version of its Amarok V6 in the third quarter of 2020.

Back in April 2018, VW announced a high-output version of its V6-powered double-cab bakkie, with the 3,0-litre TDI unit delivering a whopping 190 kW and 580 N.m.

Initial plans were for the 190 kW Amarok V6 to hit the South African market at some point in 2019, but in May of that year the Wolfsburg-based firm’s local arm confirmed the launch date had been pushed back.

Now, however, VW SA says the high-output Amarok – which is built at the firm's Pacheco factory in Argentina – will touch down on local shores in the third quarter of 2020, slotting in at the summit of the 12-strong range (which currently tops out at R854 300 for the V6-powered Extreme variant).
