Volkswagen Amarok XL Revealed for Australia

Volkswagen Australia has revealed it's factory-endorsed' Amarok XL and XXL models, which offer even more carrying capacity.

The Volkswagen Amarok already boasts one of the biggest load bins in the segment, but if you feel you require more length, then how about an Amarok XL or Amarok XXL.

The conversion is done by South Australian-based Adaptive Manufacturing, with the original work completed by Dutch outfit Veth Automotive. Impressively, this aftermarket conversion comes with Volkswagen Australia's 5-year warranty.

What exactly does this conversion entail? Well, the Amarok XL wheelbase has been extended by 310 mm, taking it all the way to 3 405 mm. Want even more space? How about the Amarok XXL then, with an extra 650 mm additional wheelbase, taking it t0 3 745 mm.

I can't imagine that being pleasant to drive or park, the Amarok is already a very large vehicle.

It’s official! Next-gen VW Amarok to be built by Ford in South Africa

Volkswagen has confirmed the next-generation Amarok will be built alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa.

Signed agreements between the two firms include the production of “a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022”.

Thomas Sedran, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said “the collaboration with Ford” formed part of his division’s “transformation process”.

VW’s latest statement confirmes Ford will “produce the new version of the Amarok for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles based on the Ranger”, with the new Amarok to be built at Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa from 2022. The plant already builds the current Ranger (including the Raptor) as well as the Ranger-based Everest.

“What is important for both partners is the utilisation of the same platform. At the same time we will both be able to fully deploy our strengths. Through custom designs and interfaces we will clearly differentiate the two models,” Sedran said.

2022 Volkswagen Amarok: What We Know So Far

While it's very early in the development phase, speculation based on trends and past experience means we do have some idea of what could happen. Despite the Dieselgate scandal, turbodiesel will remain critical in commercial vehicles and, given how slowly the fuel quality has improved in Sub-Saharan Africa, we wouldn't be surprised if VW's current engine portfolio of 2.0-litre biturbo diesel and 3.0-litre TDI V6 diesel motors are carried over, albeit with minor revisions. For this bakkie to be sold in Europe, it's going to need to comply with harsh emissions regulations, so there's a massive question mark for that market. South Africa's emissions regulations are much less stringent. Perhaps Volkswagen will shove its Touareg R's hybrid 3.0 V6 turbopetrol motor into the engine bay?

There's is absolutely no doubt that Volkswagen is aware of how well the Ford Ranger Raptor has been received, plus there's the imminent arrival of the GR Hilux. While an Amarok V6 with monstrous tyres and offroad-racing suspension may be a bit far-fetched, Volkswagen would probably consider an R-Line body kit for its next-gen double-cab bakkie, having noted how successful that trim level has been on its other passenger-vehicle products. When last did you see a non-R Line Volkswagen Tiguan? Let's not forget this is a shared collaborative effort with Ford, so there's no reason why we couldn't see Ford engines making their way into the next-gen Amarok, similar to the Z4/Supra overlap, which sees a BMW powerplant feature in both the German roadster and Japanse coupe.

Summary

Both brands have heavily invested in their South African production operations and bakkies are such an integral part of South African motoring culture. With this in mind, the idea of next-gen Ford Ranger ladder-frame chassis units leaving the Silverton factory and heading for Volkswagen's Uitenhage plant for next-gen Amarok bodywork and final assembly is not as radical as you might think. The next-generation Amarok and Ranger are due to be revealed in their final form in 2022. Watch this space, as we're very likely to spot prototype mules undergoing testing in South Africa.

NEXT-GEN (SA-BUILT!) VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK TO USE FORD ENGINES – REPORT

A fresh report out of Australia claims the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok will not only be based on the Ford Ranger’s platform but use the Blue Oval bakkie’s engines, too.

VW recently has confirmed the second-generation Amarok would be built alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa from 2022.

Now, however, CarAdvice reports the next Amarok will “adopt at least two key Ford engines”. The first, says the publication, is the Dearborn-based firm’s twin-turbo 2,0-litre diesel unit, as used in the Ranger Raptor and other derivatives (as well as the Everest).

The second is Ford’s 3,0-litre turbodiesel V6, which is rumoured to be lined up for use in the next-gen Raptor. CarAdvice claims both engines will be linked to Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission.

If the report turns out to be accurate, that’d mean the end of the line for the current Amarok’s 3,0-litre V6 oil-burner.

VOLKSWAGEN WOULD HAVE KILLED OFF AMAROK WITHOUT FORD, ADMITS EXEC

The head of Volkswagen’s commercial vehicles division has admitted the Amarok would have been scrapped were it not for the German firm’s alliance with Ford.

Thomas Sedran, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, confirmed VW wouldn’t have been able to build a second-generation Amarok without some sort of “collaboration”.

"Ultimately it is our customers who will benefit, as without the co-operation we would not have developed a new Amarok,” he said.

Sedran also announced the new Amarok will be produced “as of 2022” at Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa, alongside the next-gen Ranger. However, despite sharing a platform, he promised the alliance would “clearly differentiate the two models”.

Volkswagen exec says electric Amarok is becoming 'more possible'.

A high-ranking Volkswagen executive says a fully electric Amarok is looking “more possible” as battery technology becomes “more robust”.

Thomas Ulbrich, VW’s board member responsible for electric mobility, suggested to Autoblog the electric powertrain would be well suited to a bakkie.

"It's a difficult discussion, to have an Amarok or a similar car using BEV [battery electric vehicle] technology. We are looking at what Rivian is doing, because normally it is difficult to believe that a car like the Amarok, for example, could be electrified,” he said.

The 190 kW version of the Volkswagen Amarok V6 is finally set to launch in South Africa and we’ve unearthed local prices for what will be the most powerful double-cab bakkie on the market.

From what we can tell, two high-output versions of the V6 engine will be offered in South Africa. Both feature a 3,0-litre TDI unit delivering a whopping 190 kW and 580 N.m, along with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. That's enough, says VW, for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 7,3 seconds.

So, how much are you looking at here? Well, the Amarok 3,0 TDI 190 kW 4Motion Auto Highline is priced from R908 300, with options limited to heavy-duty leaf springs (R1 300) and Milford 19-inch alloy wheels (R12 700). The Amarok 3,0 TDI 190 kW 4Motion Auto Extreme, meanwhile, comes in at R974 600 (the only extra being a sports bar in body colour for R15 000).

Lower-powered V6 oil-burner variants remain (in Highline, Highline Plus, Extreme and Canyon form), churning out 165 kW and 550 N.m. The local line-up also includes 2,0 BiTDI engine options, generating 132 kW and 420 N.m (and available in Highline, Highline Plus and Dark Label guise).

SA-spec 190 kW Volkswagen Amarok V6: official details released

We recently brought you local pricing for the 190 kW version of the Volkswagen Amarok V6 double-cab bakkie. And now VW South Africa has released official details.

Interestingly, the pair of 190 kW variants (the R908 300 Highline and the R974 600 Extreme; the latter on our list of SA’s most expensive bakkies) will hit the market only in November 2020. But when they do, they will effectively replace the 165 kW versions.

As we’ve already pointed out, the most powerful Amarok employs a 3,0-litre V6 TDI engine sending 190 kW (from 3 000 to 4 500 r/min) and 580 N.m (between 1 400 and 2 750 r/min) to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. An overboost function sees peak power pushed to 200 kW for 10-second bursts.

The result, says the Wolfsburg-based firm, is a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 7,6 seconds and a top speed of 207 km/h. VW SA claims an average fuel consumption of 9,5 L/100 km.

In South Africa, the 190 kW Amarok will be available in Candy White, Mojave Beige, Indium Grey metallic and Deep Black Pearl Effect exterior colours.

Volkswagen Amarok: daily production of outgoing bakkie set to double

Volkswagen says it plans on more than doubling daily production of the outgoing Amarok bakkie at its factory in Argentina.

According to Motor1.com’s Brazilian arm, VW said it would increase the pace of production to meet high demand both in Argentina and more than 30 export countries (including South Africa, where the 190 kW V6 version is finally set to launch).

Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind VW no longer builds the bakkie in Hanover, with the Pacheco plant having since taken over as the bakkie's main production site.

VW says it will increase production by 36 percent on 21 September 2020, which should see the daily average jump from 110 to 150 units. In October, however, that figure is expected to rise to 230 units a day, which would represent an increase of 110 percent.

Volkswagen plotting (Raptor-based) Amarok R flagship, claims report

A fresh report out of Germany claims Volkswagen is plotting a high-powered Amarok R that will share much with the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor.

The second-gen Amarok is set be produced alongside the next Ranger at Ford’s assembly plant in Silverton, South Africa, from 2022. Signed agreements between the two firms include the production of “a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022”.

Now, AutoBild is reporting that a “sportier R variant” of the new Amarok is on the cards, with the Raptor set to provide a base. The German publication also released a rendering of what it thinks such a bakkie would look like, which you can see above.
