Volkswagen Australia reveals macho-looking Amarok W580X

It would seem that the Aussies are now going out of their way to create bakkie envy among South Africans. Not long after Nissan revealed its Navara Warrior down under, Volkswagen’s Australian Commercial Vehicles division has revealed the 2022 version of its Amarok W580X.

As with the Nissan, this wilder-looking Amarok is also the result of a collaboration with a local engineering company, and in this case it’s Walkinshaw that did the greasy work. While there are no engine mods to speak of, the Amarok V6 that this new edition is based on is already well endowed, with 190 kW (200 kW on overboost) and 580 N.m.

You’ll never mistake the W580X for an ordinary Amarok in the parking lot, thanks to a redesigned grille, front bumper inserts, custom bash plate and rock sliders, wheel arch extensions, Seikel underbody protection and unique 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with off-road tyres.

Volkswagen Amarok W580X Announced

The Volkswagen Amarok W580X is probably the last Amarok to be revealed before the all-new model debuts.

The Volkswagen Amarok has been around since 2010 and it will be replaced by a vehicle that’s a result of Volkswagen and Ford collaborating together . The best part of this news is this vehicle will be assembled in Ford’s facility in South Africa.

But, before we say our farewells, Volkswagen Australia is not going to let the Amarok retire quietly. It has paired with Aussie engineering specialists Walkinshaw again to create a special edition. We’ve covered the Amarok W580S before, but that setup was focused more on-road performance.

What you see is the Volkswagen Amarok W580X which takes the competent package and gives it a bit more offroad capability. The suspension lift kit improves the ground clearance and there’s been work done to the suspension with MTB twin-tube dampers, and the vehicle comes with custom bash plates and rock sliders.

To further enhance its offroad capability is underbody protection, breathers and Walkinshaw will even supply a snorkel as an option if you’re feeling really adventurous. The Volkswagen Amarok W580X also features 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, wheel arch extensions, new-look front grill and the cabin gains some new Walkinshaw-branded seat trim.

John Cadogan is in no way convinced that the 2023 Amarok will have 100% VW (and not Ford) DNA

The million buck bakkie: Volkswagen Amarok 3.0 V6 TDI 4Motion tested

There’s one question you have to ask yourself though, and that’s whether it’s worth the money for that alone. Does it do anything different than say a similar, or slightly less specced and less powerful double cab that’s R300 000 to R400 000 less expensive? The short answer is no, especially with a new model waiting in the wings but it’s still selling and it is a fantastic drive.

Spy Shots: 2023 Volkswagen Amarok

This is the all-new 2023 Volkswagen Amarok, carefully camouflaged and it has been spotted in the United States of America. Here’s the latest on the Wolfsburg-based brand’s Hilux fighter.

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok has been spotted testing! Good timing, as the Volkswagen Amarok is one of the oldest bakkies on sale in South Africa and despite the addition of a thundering V6 engine, is really starting to show its age.

The big news is that if you remember correctly, back in early 2019 Volkswagen and Ford signed an agreement to develop and share costs on the new generation of commercial vehicles. So that’s bakkies and vans (think Caddy and Transit). During the conference, Volkswagen chairman Herbert Diess said the new Amarok will be one of the first fruits of the collaboration between Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and American carmaker Ford.

There will be a lot of shared technology and we expect this 2nd-generation Volkswagen Amarok to feature a lot of kit with the all-new Ford Ranger, and both models are expected to go on sale after 2022.

Class of 2022: Golf R, new Polo GTI, Taigo - all the new cars Volkswagen is bringing to SA

• Volkswagen South Africa is readying for a busy 2022.

• The automaker will launch several new vehicles next year, including the new Golf R.

• The all-new Amarok's launch date will be confirmed in the new year.

And the Amarok?

This is perhaps the biggest news everyone is waiting for, but Volkswagen SA can only confirm when the new Amarok will launch in 2022. As we are aware by now, Volkswagen and Ford signed a new agreement that will see the two automotive giants produce their respective bakkies, the Amarok and Ranger, alongside each other. And yes, both will bakkies will be built in South Africa.

Ford already revealed its all-new Ranger, but Volkswagen is yet to do so with its next Amarok. The new Ranger is scheduled to launch in Q4 next year, which won't make it impossible for the all-new Amarok to be launched around the same time.

All-new Volkswagen Amarok teased – interior sketch revealed

The all-new Volkswagen Amarok has been teased with two sketches from the German manufacturer. The new model will be based on the recently revealed Ford Ranger but will possess a design that is in-line with its current language.

The new Volkswagen Amarok has a completely new appearance inside and out, but in future also has even more extensive equipment on board. “The Amarok makes possible what in many places appears impossible at first sight: it makes things easier for its users by assisting them in their work and everyday lives”, says Dr Lars Krause, Brand Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “That’s because the Amarok provides solutions that enable our customers to achieve their goals –especially when things get difficult.”

Now in its third generation, the new vehicle has more driver assist systems and connectivity features. The Volkswagen Amarok, due in 2022, claims to features innovations that have not been seen before in this segment.

As the manufacturer’s Commercial Vehicles’ all-rounder, the new Volkswagen Amarok hopes to impress with its compelling lines and its overall appearance. “The striking front, and above all the defining design clearly distinguish the new Amarok and emphasise its claim to be leading the way”, confirms Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “We’ve given the strength and power of the new Amarok an unambiguous expression–with clear Volkswagen DNA, inside and out.” This hopes to show the confidence of the model, which has been penned to impress visually.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok: More Details

Some more teasers and details of the new Volkswagen Amarok have been announced. Here’s what you can expect from the new bakkie.

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok will be revealed next year and the best news is it will be built right here in South Africa as well as Argentina. Previously, it was also assembled in Hanover, Germany.

If you were not aware, the all-new Volkswagen Amarok will be sharing a platform with the brand-new Ford Ranger that has just been revealed. We’re impressed by what the new Ranger offers based on what we’ve seen so far, so expectations are quite high for the Volkswagen version.

Volkswagen says its new Amarok will feature a completely new look, both inside and out as well as offer a wider range of standard equipment. The 3rd generation Volkswagen Amarok will also feature more advanced driver assistance systems and boast more connectivity. Volkswagen claims it will feature “innovations that have not been seen before in this segment.”

When will the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok be revealed?

The brand-new Volkswagen Amarok will be revealed in 2022, with an exact date not yet announced. Volkswagen has confirmed that the newcomer will be available to order in Europe from late 2022.

Still one of the better looking and best performance bakkies but gee it's a lot of money for a bakkie and you better have deep pockets if something goes wrong.

New Volkswagen Amarok teaser pics give us a better look outside and in

We’ve already seen the new Ford Ranger and it won’t be long before we get to lay our eyes on the vehicle that it’s donating most of its DNA to: the second-generation Volkswagen Amarok.

Born from a partnership between the two carmakers, the new Amarok will be built alongside its Ranger cousin at Ford’s Silverton plant in Gauteng.

The Volkswagen will share its basic architecture with the new Ford, and almost certainly its engines too, although VW’s commercial design head Albert Johann Kirzinger has previously stated that his team were working hard with the Ford Ranger designers in Australia to ensure that the Amarok felt like a true Volkswagen, and not just a rebadged Ford.

And now we can almost judge that for ourselves, thanks to a new pair of teaser images that show us the front end as well as the interior of the new Volkswagen Amarok.

Although the Vee-Dub will likely share its basic body shape with the Ford, the rendering shows a completely different front end that includes a clamshell bonnet and a headlight and grille design resembling the German carmaker’s latest SUVs.

The picture also shows flared wheel arches, although we’re not sure if that’s simply a normal case of design rendering exaggeration.
