VW launches more affordable auto-equipped Amarok derivative

Volkswagen has launched a more affordable automatic-equipped Amarok double-cab derivative in South Africa, undercutting the previous most economical by R93 900…

Volkswagen has rolled out a new Amarok double-cab derivative in South Africa, combining the “Life” trim level with a 4×2 configuration and an automatic transmission. The newcomer thus arrives as the most affordable auto-equipped variant in the local range.

The launch of the fresh 2.0 TDI Life 4×2 6AT derivative sees the local VW Amarok line-up – which, of course, is built alongside the Ranger at Ford’s Silverton plant in Gauteng – expand to 13 variants, with all but 2 featuring the double-cab body style.

Priced from R704 700, the new 2.0 TDI Life 4×2 6AT comes at a premium of R40 300 over the base 2.0TDI double cab (R664 400), though keep in mind the latter features a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. This new variant thus assumes the role of most affordable auto-equipped Amarok in the range, undercutting the 4Motion version by R93 900.

While double-cab derivatives further up the portfolio use either the 2.0 BiTDI (154 kW/500 Nm) or 3.0 TDI V6 (184 kW/600 Nm) oil-burners, the new 2.0 TDI Life 4×2 6AT employs the single-turbo version of the 4-cylinder motor.

VW Confirms SA Specs for 222 kW Amarok

Volkswagen Group Africa has announced the standard specs that will be included with the soon-to-arrive 222 kW Amarok package.

In July 2025, we broke the news that the 222 kW Volkswagen Amarok has been confirmed for South Africa. Now, following showcasing this model – alongside several other new VW products – including the Golf Mk8.5 GTI, Tayron and new Transporter – at the 2025 SA Festival of Motoring, the local arm of the German marque has announced the features that will be included with this package.

222 kW Volkswagen Amarok SA Specs

Based on PanAmericana spec, the 222 kW Amarok will feature such items as 12-inch touchscreen infotainment, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring, digital instrumentation, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a 360-degree surround-view camera array, 10-way electric adjustment for the driver and front passenger seats, and several advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The latter includes adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

The package further includes LED matrix headlamps. A styling bar and power roller shutter for the load bay are also present. The 222 kW Amarok rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in all-terrain tyres.

VW Amarok to Remain Diesel & Petrol

Volkswagen has told CAR Magazine that the Amarok will not receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain and remain petrol- and diesel-powered.

Alongside its pure petrol- and diesel-powered bakkie offerings, several automakers have introduced new-energy (NEV) powertrains to their bakkie portfolios. Take Ford, for example. In 2021, the US automaker unveiled the F-150 Lightning, the marque’s first-ever all-electric pick-up. However, for markets outside of the US, perhaps the most significant NEV from the Blue Oval brand is the Ranger PHEV (plug-in hybrid), which was revealed in 2023 and, although produced in South Africa, remains unconfirmed for our market. In addition, there’s been talks that the upcoming new Toyota Hilux lineup could include a battery-electric model in the future.

However, although Volkswagen’s Amarok shares its underpinnings with the Ranger, and is locally produced alongside the Ford in Silverton, the German marque has told us that the Amarok will not adopt a PHEV powertrain.

Speaking to Lars Krause, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Board Member of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, at 2025 IAA Mobility, Krause told CAR Magazine that, while the Wolfsburg company has discussed it quite a lot, it thinks the solution available won’t fulfil the needs it sees for its specific markets.

222 kW Volkswagen Amarok: SA Price Announced

Volkswagen Group Africa has announced local pricing for the 222 kW Amarok. See pricing below.

In September 2025, Volkswagen Group Africa confirmed specifications for the 222 kW Amarok, with the local arm of the German marque announcing the most powerful model in its portfolio will exclusively be available in PanAmericana guise. Now, at the SA launch of the new Transporter, the automaker has revealed pricing for the 222 kW version.

The sole petrol-powered model in the local Amarok lineup, the 222 kW model’s power is sourced from a 2.3-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol motor, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The full complement of torque – 452 N.m – is available from 1 750 r/min. Volkswagen claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.

222 kW Volkswagen Amarok Price in SA

The 222 kW Amarok PanAmericana is priced from R1 099 000, making it R4 500 more expensive than the similarly-specced (154 kW/500 N.m) 2.0BiTDI model and R91 900 less expensive than the (184 kW/600 N.m) 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 PanAmericana derivative. Pricing includes a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 Petrol (2025) Price & Specs

The Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 petrol double-cab bakkie will be going on sale in October 2025. Here’s pricing, plus what you get for your money.

- Petrol powered-Amarok joins the range.
- 222 kW and 452 Nm makes it the quickest of the new-generation Amarok.
- Priced from just over R1 million.

Engine and Performance

The Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 Petrol will be the sole petrol-powered model in the lineup. The engine is a 2.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol which makes 222 kW and 452 Nm, and that’s paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s interesting to note that this is not the Ecoboost motor which was in the Focus RS/Mustang, but rather an updated and enhanced version known as the 2.3L MPC.

How much does the Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 Petrol cost in South Africa?

We’re assuming the Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 Petrol’s aftersales package follows the same strategy as the rest of the range, which is a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan and a five-year/150 000 km warranty.
